Man made catastrophe in the west, so
Chernobyl reactor used U-235 as reactive material and graphite rods to control the chain reaction (
Antimatter +
Gravity pillars).
The catastrophic events started when the engineers decided to do an experiment to prove (ironically), that the reactor is safe even in the case of power loss in the cooling system. Hence, the emergency cooling system was deactivated intentionally (
Chaos Seed). During the experiment, the temperature in the reactor increased sharply and the cooling fluid evaporated. As the cooling agent also acts as moderator, the speed of the atomic reaction constantly increased (
acceleration). The engineers tried to counteract by inserting the graphite rods, but this was insufficent due to the small number of only 12 rods and several construction errors (
unstoppable). The increase in heat and neutron production continued and eventually the whole reactor exploded (more
acceleration +
nova). A large number of workers, called liquidators, were employed to get the situation under control. These were poorly equipped, uninformed concerning the dangers and had surely not the special skills to deal with this situation (
frogs). However, quotes demonstrate that some were well aware of the deadly risk and nevertheless did the work with admirable bravery (
adrenaline). They covered the destroyed reactor under a huge concrete sarcophagus (
gravity shield). While some of them outright died, most suffered longtime effects as dramatically increased cancer rate (
mutation). Today, nature is reclaiming the contaminated area, but a large number of malformed specimen can be observed for both plants and animals (
abomination).
