Team Competition: Caught Ruby-Handed
There was a murder.
There were six people in the house.
One of them did it.
The Plot:
Six eccentric people spend less than 24 hours in the Ruby Mansion, home of the unmarried Duchess Quin Tessence.
Once the five of them arrive (the sixth works for the Duchess), she gives them a tour of her lovely home. The first map shows the location of the guests near the end of the tour. Sister Aubrie was alone in the Ballroom, later she explained to the detectives that she was not alone, she was in fact speaking with God through the chandelier. Crusader Charles had gotten distracted from the tour when he started talking to Salvager Sally in the Conservatory. She claims that she had a very bad feeling, a spiritual illness and the Crusader was quoting scripture at her, to help relive her of her demons (he claimed to know that she was possessed). He had planned on anointing her with a holy water and his holy blade, but he told detectives he left them at home. The tour ended in the library and the whereabouts of the guests after that are unknown.

Sometime in the Middle of the Night: Duchess Quin Tessence is murdered. An unnamed maid, who had arrived early the next morning, found the Duchess' body in the Ballroom. Crime Scene Investigators ruled this a homicide that occurred sometime in the late evening, but before anyone had actually gone to sleep. (So it was not this random maid). The map below is where each guest including the maintenance worker Sally claimed he/she was around the time of the murder.

The Cast:
- :aether Duchess Quin Tessence, she was the owner of Ruby Mansion. She was found dead in the Ballroom. Whomever cleaned up the crime scene left no traces of DNA and no traces of any sort of weapon.
- :earth Sister Aubrie, she was never invited to the party, but she's there posing as Sister Grey, her biological sister. They are both nuns from the same convent.
- :gravity Salvager Sally works maintenance for the Ruby Mansion.
- :water Lady Patience is the town psychic. Nobody believes in her antics, but townsfolk often go to her for town gossip. She seems to know everybody's business.
- :light Crusader Charles, an 85 year old rich widower bound in a wheelchair. He is fueled by the conviction of God in his heart. Age has not dulled his wit.
- :darkness Dr. Dev Hour, the young, handsome town physician, known for backroom deals and drug trafficking, but also a brilliant doctor.
- :entropy Lieutenant Lycanthrope spends most of his time telling war stories. This 66 year old man is extremely superstition and denies his suffering of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, not from the wars, but from his marriage.
Extra, Relevant, Important Details From the Detectives:
Sister Aubrie: I was in the Lounge, praying. I had seen a butterfly in the Conservatory and I followed it through a little passage way that got me to the other side of the house. I don't know why God wanted me there. I caught the butterfly, and I felt the sweet golden dust rub onto my hands, but when I opened them...it was gone. Immediately I got on my knees and started praying for mercy.
Salvager Sally: The night before I was told by the Duchess that I had to fixer-up that there jammed thermostat in the Hall. Well, I'll tell you something, I was so gosh darn tired that night that I went to bed real early. When that pour soul was killed I was fixin' her thermostat.
Lady Patience: OOooooh child! I was chattin with da Mistah Lycan. Ain't he just a peach! That po' po' man with that insufferable wife a his. Ooooohh I shiver at the thought.
Crusader Charles: This my sound crazy, but keep your eyes on that little witch. I don't mean the Lady, I mean that nun. I just don't trust her, and that's what I was doing, making sure she wasn't stirring trouble. I still don't trust that witch.
Dr. Dev Hour: I don't have to explain myself to you.
Lieutenant Lycanthrope: That Lady Patience is a wonderful gal. I was perusing the books in the library when she came in. Did you see the collection of books Quin has here? It's amazing, really it is. There are maybe sixty or seventy books on my war alone. Gee whiz, that was a nightmare. You should have seen us, battling one horrible, terrifying monster. She was a Godzilla named Deborah, if we weren't face-to-face with her in the morning as we sipped out of our still dry canteens, we had nightmares about her in our sleep. The boys were a mess for many years and I had to keep my platoon together. This was no easy feat, and we did not all make it out..but..wow. This library has quite the collection.
Sister Aubrie: Butterfly Dust, The Prayer Cloak of Saints, A necklace with a white, bright unidentifiable rock
Salvager Sally: A disassembled thermostat, a flashlight
Lady Patience: Emerald Jewelry, Dagger dripping with red liquid (but not blood), Pocket charm: a carcass of a dead spider.
Crusader Charles: Priest's Staff of Eternal Life and Purifying Water (even though he claimed he did not have them with him), A book: The How-To on Healing Hands
Dr. Dev Hour: Epinephrine, Basilisk Blood, Cleaning supplies, a sandwich, Scrambled Eggs.
Lieutenant Lycanthrope: Tear-stained heavy armor (he was crying when approached, moaning about grenades and divorce court). Also noted: He was plucking the string of his war bow like a harp.
The point to this whole thing:
- You are going to write the story, create the card art, design the weapon card, and build a deck.
- You can get into teams of 1-3 people large. We don't care who does what. Nobody specific has to do anything specific.
- StoryWriter: The story you write will include: Who killed the Duchess. When. Where. How. Why.
- Artist: Create the card art for the weapon card. Any medium.
- Card Designer:The weapon card you design will be the murder weapon of the story.
- The card must be able to be implemented into the actual game as a weapon card.
- The card must be of the element OR use an ability that costs the element of the PERSON who killed the Duchess
- Example: If I write that Sally killed the Duchess, then my card must cost X :gravity to play OR the ability must cost X :gravity to use OR the passive ability must affect :gravity quanta directly.
- Example: If I write that Dev Hour killed the Duchess, then my card must cost X :darkness to play OR the ability must cost X :darkness to use OR the passive ability must affect :darkness quanta directly.
- The card you create must have synergy with at least ONE of the items found on the person you decided is the murderer. (The official list is spoiled below)
- Example: If I write that Sally killed the Duchess, then my card must have synergy with Fahrenheit or Freeze or Ray of Light.
- Example: If I write that Aubrie killed the Duchess, then my card must have synergy with Butterfly Effect or Cloak or Shard of Divinity.
- Deck Builder:The deck you build will be based off of the motive of the murderer.
- The deck must include at least one copy of the weapon card you just designed for this competition.
- The deck must include at least 2 of the 3 cards in the list of Official Synergies spoiled below.
- The deck's mark must be the mark of the murderer OR the murdered.
- The deck can be any mix of unupped and upped cards. And anything goes as long as the above conditions are met.
- There is no right answer.
- You need to provide unupped and upped versions of the card. Your synergy needs to stay consistent between the two versions.
- You get no extra points if you synergize with all three choices.
- Submit in this thread. No person can be on two teams.
REMEMBER: You only need to synergize your weapon card with one. We gave you (at least) three choices.
Sister Aubrie: Butterfly Effect, Cloak, Shard of Divinity
Salvager Sally: Fahrenheit, Freeze/Congeal, Photon/Ray of Light
Lady Patience: Emerald/Jade Shield, Rage Potion/Elixir, Phase Spider/Recluse
Crusader Charles: Eternity, Purify, (Improved) Heal
Dr. Dev Hour: Adrenaline/Epinephrine, Basilisk Blood, Fate Eggs
Lieutenant Lycanthrope: Nymph's Tears, Plate/Heavy Armor, Owl's/Eagle's Eye

This looks great, good work Op! I'll definitely try. Anyone want to team up with me as an artist/card designer or DB let me know ^_^
EDIT: I have a team
-
It was the butler
-
Artist and/or CD looking for others. Spectacular failures still guaranteed ;D

Looking for a team
-
You get no extra points if you synergize with all three choices.
What does this mean? o_o
Also, i could be an Artist if any team needs one.
edit: currently taken
-
It means synergizing with all three cards isn't any better than synergizing with just one.
-
wouldn't mind trying my hand at this ;)
Edit:honestly, the only thing I could see my self doing well with, is the card design/mechanics, or the story.
-
Looking for a team. I can be a DB and possibly help with story.

Let's see those submissions folks! Duchess Quin Tessence's body is starting to smell really really badly.....

Submission from Team Stabby (Naesala, Submachine, MeowMeowCat)
The line up was all there. Six seemingly unsuspecting guests, a lady dead on the ballroom floor, and a handful of mismatched tools. Inspector Phoenix waved away the officers to the side of the room so he could speak to each of the suspects. He paced slowly in front of them, chewing a piece of gum and looking each of the figures right in the eye.
“Well then, who was it?†shouted the good Lady Patience.
“Patience, Patience,†the inspector said with a chuckle. “Oh yes, I know who committed these crimes. Let's look at the facts. You all get invited over to a short soiree, chat a bit as you get a tour of the house, and then split off. The Duchess, bless her soul, decides to leave you all be, and then next thing you know she's found dead in the ballroom.†He stops and turns on his heel, pointing an accusing finger at Lady Patience. “And you, here with a dagger laced with a rage inducing potion!â€
“It could not have been me! I-I was with the Lieutenant all night, talking!†To this, the mopey soldier nodded in confirmation.
“Yes, and that certainly explains why we found traces of the agent on Lt. Lycanthropes armor!†The other guests all gasp. Charles speaks up, the grumpy old man wagging a boney finger at the Lady. “You tried to make an innocent man become enraged enough to kill us all! He could have even killed you! So irresponsible!†The Lieutenant was taken aback, shock in his eyes.
Patience, however, rebutted “B-but it didn't work! I didn't think that rusty plate would block the dagger so well but it did. I didn't kill her, or make anyone else do anything!†“She's right,†said the Lieutenant, “I spoke with her all night, so obviously I'm not the killer either!â€
“Interesting you should say that,†said Phoenix with a smile, “because we found the arrows and the letter from your wife saying she'd forgive you if you shot the Duchess dead in your car. I had no idea Mrs. Ghost was so upset about slights in the past. A pity you couldn't get away from Lady Patience, who was waiting for the poison to kick in. I've got you both on attempted, but ludicrously failed murder.â€
“This is a waste of time, I'm leaving,†said Dr. Dev.
“In a hurry, sir? I hear a large dose of epinephrine will do that to you. Yes, unfortunate that you ate the poisoned meal you had intended for Duchess Quin. I'm sure you're in quite the hurry to get to this,†the Inspector held up a small blue vial, “antidote that we found in your vehicle as well. Clever to tape it to the bottom of the seat. Was the poor doctor mad about being slighted at last year's ball, or just hoping to win a favor by saving a sick noble?â€
“I'm not saying anything else. My lawyers will handle this.â€
“I'm sure they will. But, attempted murder is still not murder, which is why I checked the Duchess's room for clues. Interesting that the entire room was covered in ice.â€
“Oh, that'd be mah fault, Mistah Inspectah. I was fixin' the thermostat fer m'lady when this all happened. Got called away 'fore I could finish.†Salvager Sally spat on the floor and nodded, hands in her pockets.
“A likely story, if not for the fact that our technicians found evidence that you had specifically lowered the temperature of 'm'lady's' room and no others. The will was, excuse me, a 'dead giveaway'. Must have been quite an affair you two had to get your name in there. Was a riches filled trip to San Sarino and a new set of tools really worth the attempt?" Sally looked down, embarrassed. "Ah, but the Duchess wasn't in her room was she... Sister Aubrie?â€
“Good heavens! I have no idea what you mean to imply, good sir Inspector.â€
“Really? Then it's only a coincidence that we captured Sister Grey earlier tonight outside of the premises. Really, butterfly based tracking magic? The Cult of the Nymphs is really stepping up their game it seems. Ah, but the magic wore thin when she slipped through the secret passage, and Crusader Charles here so bravely came in on you to make sure you couldn't find the entrance later, as he's already said in private to me.â€
“Absolutely, Inspector. It's my duty as a man of the cloth to stop these she-heathens from any dishonesty they might do.â€
“C-certainly this is a misunderstanding, I have never heard of such a cult.â€
“Save it for the court room, Sister. I hear Judge Emerald is partial to pretty, young things.â€
“Well, I'm glad justice has been done here,†said the crusader as he began to wheel away, “I'll just be on my way then.â€
“Not so fast, Wheels. We still haven't found the murderer. Of course, who would have guessed that a man so focused on saving life might accidentally end it?â€
“Heavens! What are you talking about?†Each of the other guests turned with shock to face the crippled old man in a chair.
“It's quite simple really. We found evidence of rapid regeneration in her cells. A pre-emptive attempt to make her more resistant to harm. But it got out of hand, didn't it? The cuts all over her body were to remove tumors. Yes, we found the tumor cells generated by your overload of magic in the fireplace.â€
The crusader squirmed uncomfortably, slowly shaking his head. “It wasn't supposed to happen that way. I...I haven't laid on hands in so long.â€
“Right, and that's why you tried to use your paladin's blade of mercy to undo what you have done. But again, it went to far. Internal corrosion via revoked healing stopped her heart. So you fled, knowing that the good Sister here had been planning a murder and hoping that you could frame her. Or is that not why we found your specifically assigned blade in what was to be her bed chamber tonight?â€
“I...I...I just wished to help. To save her from these scalawags! Surely you cannot fault me there?â€
“Oh, but I'm afraid I must. All of you, to the cars.â€
As they walked off with the officers, the sheriff came up and patted Phoenix on the back. “Five attempted, failed murders and one attempted, failed save. What're the odds?â€
“Ah but you know what they say, Sheriff.â€
“Eh?â€
“Life is the number one cause of death.â€

ART: | Submachine | IDEA: | MeowMeowCat, Naesala, Submachine | NOTES: | Mercy is a new status effect that replaces your opponents healing with half of the value as damage. Example: Player A puts Blade of Mercy into play. Player B casts "Improved Heal". Instead of healing for 20 health, Player B is damaged for 10. Value is rounded down if applicable. Shard of Sacrifice and Mercy cancel each other out. Miracle deals damage equal to the life that would have been gained, rather than setting HP to 1. | SERIES: | |

It was a cold, cold night. I was bored and lonely. Of course there were many people, yet I was alone. I do not fit in with them. Nobody really knows or understands me. I just wanted to go back home, but did not want to be impolite. I can still remember the conversations ...
Duchess: Welcome to my mansion!
...
I ... actually don't remember all that much. It's all blurry in my mind. What happened to me? The Duchess got killed, but I am the real victim. Yes. Never have I ever lost my memory like that. Not like that. I swear I will find out what happened, if not for the Duchess, then for myself!
I remember Dr. Dev Hour. He was weird. In fact, he didn't talk much at all. When we all thanked Quin for this visit, he actually stayed silent. HE WAS ALWAYS SILENT! HOW CAN A SANE PERSON NEVER TALK! ... Sorry, I don't know why I'm like this. Must be linked to my memory loss. I tell you the victim is really me! But who is the murderer?
The doctor was up to something, thats for sure. But I can't remember that much of him. Argh, think hard! Who else was there? Ah, yes, Charles. That old guy in his wheel chair. He couldn't do harm to anyone... right? He seemed so pure of heart, I don't see how he could have hurt anyone, let alone Duchess Quin Tessence. But he did disappear at some point. Hmm. And that Sally, pretending she got possessed. She probably did it. Why haven't they arrested her already? I never liked her anyway. Oh now I remember. Dev Hour, he kept stealing glances at the Duchess. He always kept an eye on her every movement. They probably did it together. Yeah, arrest them both. Arrest them bo...
...
What happened to me? Looks like I fell asleep, again. In the middle of my explanations. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME! I must have been drugged. Yes, that must be it. I remember tears flowing down lieutenant's face. Why was he crying? What could be the reason? It's not like we mentioned war or his wife. He must have done something he regretted. Like killing the Duchess. Why do all of them sound so guilty? Well, all of them except me obviously. I never could have done this. I'm not like this. I was bored but not enough to kill.... What am I saying? I never could kill out of boredom, why am I even thinking about this? It's not like I have a weapon on me... wait, I do?!? What is my staff doing in my things? I NEVER BROUGHT MY STAFF!.. oh wait, yes I did. I forgot about it. I wanted to show it to the Duchess. I ended up showing it to her after dinner. We had moved to the lounge. Oh I remember! There, she called me crazy... HOW DARES SHE! NOBODY CALLS ME CRAZY! ... so I actually did kill her. How could I? No, she deserved it! ALL OF IT! I hit her with my staff. I only wanted to hurt her, but I forgot I had my jade necklace. It actually enhanced my staff's power. Then I hit myself to fall unconscious, and lose my memory. But I have failed. I remember. I remember all of it.
Who am I talking to? Well to you of course, the voice in my head! You've guided me through all this, and you've always told me:
Patience, Lady. We'll always come out ahead in the end.
So I guess I can't tell this to anyone. I'll try and blame someone else, but if I do I'll bring suspicions to myself. So I'll just stay here and wait, try to fit in the crowd.
Actually, I can't just sit here and wait. I need an alibi. Yes, an alibi. Now, what could I find? Let's pretended I was comforting the lieutenant! Considering how much he's been drinking, he probably doesn't even remember his night, so my word is worth more than his anyway. My word is worth more than any and all these people here anyway, they all look so guilty, so filthy. I'm sure they all thought about killing the Duchess just as much as I did. They all deserve to die.
It's a cold, cold night. I am bored and lonely. Of course there are many people, yet I am alone. But I do not fit in with them. Nobody really knows or understands me. I just want to go back home, but do not want them to find out who I am.
I am the murderer, I am Lady Patience, and patiently I will wait here until they release me.

The flavour for self spell damage is that the weapon's frost effect is so strong that it affects the wielder too.

The blanked cards are upped frost staff. Also, we didnt went the entropy pend/supernova way because although that would be easy, its not really what the task required, in our opinion.
Deck DescriptionRage potion - Nothing much to say here. The rage that led to murderer committing the murder. On deck, unupped so that it is able to boost damage and can also be used as a CC.
Jade Shield - our synergy card. Goes well with staff and is also the necklace worn by the murderer, which led to the death of poor Duchess (or maybe she deserved it).
Animate weapon - Helps include the 6 weapons and increases spell damage.
Epinephrine - 8 attack is sweet number for epi, if rage potion is used as cc.
6 frost staff - As its the card we designed, its best if we use 6 of them, and help boost spell damage.
Pillars/Pends for quanta and balance.

Surely not wrong.
Never wrong.
Digging deeper with the blade.
Two women were on the floor. One howling, one bleeding.
The sounds – she gurgled, guttered and died,
She rolled her eyes,
Muttered lies,
And murmured about butterflies.
Sister Aubrie was having a lovely time.
The kindly man had blessed her wine.
The Quin woman was friendly, though she called her Sister Grey.
And the Chandelier was God, who was always nice to have at a party.
A flash of light, a popping noise, and the Ballroom was darkness.
The Salvager lady bustled in, clutching a flashlight and shone it at God.
Seeing the Chandelier-Deity illuminated in the torchlight filled Aubrey with a glorious feeling of triumph. She could almost hear God speak – “It is empty, it has broken. We must find a new one, fill the hole, bring the light.â€
Aubrey wailed in jubilant satisfaction and screamed at the hapless cleaning lady “Did you hear him? Did you? Nobody should be empty, find them and cut out the darkness!â€
Salvager Sally had had enough of these rich, pious nutters.
First that Nun went crazy at her when she was checking the light bulb in the chandelier and trying to make pleasant conversation, and now she found herself kneeling by this wrinkled old sod in a wheelchair.
“I only regret I have not my holy water to cleanse your spirit and holy blade to cut the deamons from you. I must find Sister Aubrey immediately, there are deamons about.†The old man muttered.
Maybe there was something to be said for this man and his faith. There was something wrong with Sister Aubrey, and who was to say there weren’t deamons in the house.
Sally resolved to postpone fixing the thermostat, and leave the party guests to their frolicking. First she went to let the Duchess know the bulb in the chandelier was blown.
Yet as she was scolded and shamed by Duchess Quin Tessance for interrupting her with he guests, Sally had, unbidden, a horrid thought of hurting her mistress.
Just go to bed. Everyone has thoughts like that sometimes.
The more Charles listened to the nun the more his concerns grew.
In his 85 years of living solely for the glory of God, speaking to him hourly, never had God returned the favour.
This nun heard voices, plainly, her conviction left no other alternative.
But God? No… deamons…
He would have struck the darkness from her then and there, as they talked quietly in the Lounge, but it was possible she could still be saved. And if he was to make it to that accursed chandelier, he would need her help.
“The butterflies…â€
She had been muttering about insects since they had come through from the conservatory. Not a good sign.
“Sister… SISTERâ€
Her eyes snapped up at him.
“I need you to help me back through the passageway. Take me to the deam… take me to God.â€
“You are not a butterfly. You are a cocoon. Cocoons need help to flyâ€
“Yes. This cocoon’s wheelchair is a real pain in the wings. Just push me, woman.â€
ENOUGH.
She can screw in the bulb. And screw herself while she’s at it thought Salvager Sally, savagely.
Standing in the hall, Sally was ready to storm out into the night.
Years of service, years waiting for recognition, even respect. Tonight had been the last straw. Finally having fixed the thermostat, Sally had been on her way to the Ballroom to fix the bulb, deciding in the end not to head for bed, when she had run into the Duchess. Scornful as always, cruel and careless. Standing in the half light under the lightless chandelier, Sally had snapped. She pushed the light-bulb in her mistress’s hands, and stormed off.
Now, in the hall, ready to leave the mansion for ever, Sally grabbed the newly fixed thermostat, and snapped it in two.
She stared at the jagged, pointed end. Sharp.
Through the passageway, the nun had ben fairly lucid. She still mentioned God, and light, and those bloody butterflies, but she had pushed and carried the old Crusader through well enough.
They stood before the doors of the ballroom.
“Sister… God has spoken to you, as you say. It should be you to speak to him again. Open the door.â€
She obliged.
It was cold and dark in the Ballroom. From his chair, he could see little ahead of the nun. Until she screamed.
“God’s cocoon is broken! The dark butterfly, it’s happening!†The nun collapsed on the floor, scrabbling for the white, sharp, jagged gemstone in the pendant around her neck…
In the centre of the ballroom, now visible behind her, the chandelier’s silhouette was there… but a tall dark figure was… spilling from it. It appeared that all that was left to emerge was the end of one of the deamon’s arms. Everything else was there, a tall thin body static in the half-light, just the silhouette’s arm still a part of the chandelier.
His holy blade was not with him.
He lacked his holy water.
All that was left him was his last, hidden stiletto. A sharpened point in the stopper of a false bottle. Deamons, witches, even Satan’s own spawn – none of them bother to look in an old man’s water bottle.
Duchess Quin Tessence’s breathing was heavy. Blood dribbled from her lips and onto her beautiful ball gown.
In the doorway, she saw that silly little maid. Sally. Surely she would help her?
The Salvager just grimanced, nodded to herself and turned around quietly to leave.
The nun… clutching her opened pendant, the Sister cradled a small, dead, golden Butterfly that had fallen from the compartment. “You weren’t God OR a butterfly.†Whispered the Sister, quietly.
“Nor were you a deamon.†Spoke another voice.
His eyes were wide, but voice, steady. And his hand still gripped the blade.
“One mistake does not out-do a lifetime of fighting the forces of evil. God forgive me, I must lie. Or who will save the nun from the deamons clearly living in her soul – this was their doing… they tricked me. But you… why were you in this accursed room so late?â€
Quin said nothing. She was already gone. As her body relaxed, a small, glass light bulb slipped from her palm.

The PrayerDear Lord,
I am your faithful
Crusader.Bathe me in your justice, and
Mark me with your
Light.
Give me compassion to find your followers, angels and saints, and if they are suffering,
Heal their wounds.
Give me courage to find your enemies, deamons and pretenders, and
Purify their poisoned souls.
With the grace of your compassion, allow my
Spirit to grow.
Finally, should all else fail,
Animate my broken, frail body, and allow the thrust of my
Hallowed Blade find the deamons, and cut deep into their darkness.
Amen
