Winning the match does matter, in that in winning, you get seeded against other winners.
Really, this event was never intended to have a single winner -- so on one level, you're absolutley right: winning an individual match doesn't actually matter except insofar as it adds to your team's total. There are no prizes for the most successful player at the end except bragging rights, and it's entirely possible that the most successful player won't be on the winning team (largely overwriting those bragging rights).
If that turns out to be a major concern for players (if it is please PM me rather than cluttering the battle thread,) it's something that we'll have to keep in mind when we work on future team-based events.
