Title: Deckbuilding Competition: The Mastery Gauntlet
Post by: Aves on June 15, 2018, 07:30:38 pm
The Mastery Gauntlet
PolishedPotato panted, leaning on his +2 Mighty Polearm. Five mooks, two captains, and one champion down. Only the Dungeon Lord remained, lurking in the abyss.

The Task

Can we include stats in a similar fashion to arena decks (HP, How many marks, double draw)? If so, is there a limit to how much HP a deck can have?

After discussion, we've decided to allow you to include these with no formal restrictions. We strongly recommend that you keep values reasonable, but voters will be the ones to decide those limits.

The winner will receive the following forum award icon, as well as a spot in the glorious Hall of Fame (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/competitions/competition-winners/)!

We hadn't intended for you to be able to, but it's an idea worth considering. I'll discuss it with CO.

THE INSANITY GAUNTLET
5 foes with a shattered sanity wait beyond the doors to the abandoned asylum.

The first obstacle is a man who likes to lurk in the shadows. Guarded by a pair of werewolves, he brandishes his Dirks and animates them, empowering them with some of his own insanity. Meanwhile, he utilizes the shards of crystals filled with the negative emotions of hundreds of people to drain you of your energy until you are nothing but a shell of your former self filled with nothing but the Void.

Upon entering the next room, you find multiple holes in the ground. Out of one hole climbs a man who clearly hasn't taken a shower in months, spouting gibberish. The only word you can make out is "diamonds". The man looks at you and screams, causing many antlions to charge towards you; their actions as chaotic as their owner. The whole room falls into a state of discord as more holes quickly collapse from underneath you.

You have been informed that the third opponent used to be a mercenary, until an overload of work drove him into insanity. As you enter, he stares at you in silence. He mutters "Time to get to work," and charges. You stand your guard, but his attacks are too erratic to predict. This opponent proves to be an unstoppable force to reckon with.

The next opponent greets you with deranged laughter from above. You look up and see a winged girl looking down upon you. Surrounding her are long bows animated and powered by the girl's unstableness, raining arrows down upon you. As you try to dodge the arrows she flies freely, oblivious to the fact that she is in a closed room with no windows and a ceiling lamp illuminating the area.

Your last opponent isn't a person, but four. They are dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing and they look as if they have been trapped for an eternity. As you approach they suddenly drop to their knees and, while groaning, their bodies start to swell up. Eventually, swarms of scarabs burst out of their bodies and devour the remains of the bodies. Once they are done the swarm, with chaotic behavior, flies towards you ready to eat you alive. As you prepare yourself to fight you think, "I was not ready for any of the things that would happen today."

There's no story in the making of this gauntlet other than the methodical way it was designed to be hard to beat. The gauntlet contains 6 decks representing each of the major deck archetypes in effort to create a very diverse group of decks to hopefully have some counter for whatever you use against them. Each deck is a version of a famous pvp deck from each archetype to ensure effectiveness. All decks have the normal 100hp, 1 card per turn, 1 quantum from mark, and 6 max copies of non pillar/pendulum cards.

Descriptions of deck archetypes can be found here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/elements-articles/deck-type-table-(advanced-elements-theory)/). Denial is more vague.

Cremarush

As you can see all cards in this deck are for more damage output. Even explosions aren't included though they often increase the damage output by destroying shields. This deck and all following decks are as pure as possible to their archetype.

Gauntlet Of The 4 Elements

This gauntlet takes you, the challenger, on a journey. Empedocles believed everything was created out of elements; fire, air, water and earth.
Not only will you face the might of the 4 classical elements, but you will also see how these elements interact and create something new.

The gauntlet is a challenge for anybody who wants to test a new unupgraded deck. You can even cheat a little by adding some upgrades to make it easier.
The gauntlet contains all different types of strategies, with the exception of a pure quanta denial deck.
You start with fire and end with an earth/fire duo. At the end of the run the player feels like he went full circle.

Fall From Heaven Gauntlet

As a servant of the higher Gods, you did everything you were told and lived in bliss and harmony with the angels. You wanted more though. You wanted to live among the Gods instead of angels. You needed more power so you start amassing Wisdom and Divinity shards that are available in the Heavens and use them to become ethereal. Your actions do not go unnoticed and the Gods banish you.

You use what little power you were able to gain and resist your banishment  :light

Quest for the Holy Treasure
You embark on your quest to find the rare treasures of other kingdoms. This has led you to finding several weapons, ornaments, and idols throughout the lands. The next location is the Light kingdom, for a rare treasure to add to your collection.

You approach the Light Kingdom. The walls are heavily protected and ever going stronger. You don't care, take down that wall.

Many of these decks are normal in build, modifying only in health, mark, and size. Since the ruling on anything about stats is legal, as well as no rule on the decks having to be "legal" in game, I decided to take as many liberties in how the decks could be. This made me imagine how many ways i could change rules outside standard rules. Chroma mark Crusaders rainbow and the armory deck came to mind. If the COs decide that this is illegal, I agree to take the decks out of the gauntlet.

The Bartenders Blunder

Now that you have finished your battle training and are ready to face any and all possible challenges that could be thrown at you out in the wonderful land of the mystical elements, you decide to take a quick stop at the local tavern to quench your thirst before starting your quest. As you walk up to the bartender behind the counter, he stares at you and asks what you would like. Something simple and tasty is what you figure could be a good start.

"Ah, I know what I'll start you off with." exclaims the bartender

You down the beer quickly and with a gaseous belch you alert the bartender that you need something stronger.

"hmm, maybe something with a little heat could sour your soul my friend." that bartender comments casually.

You stare at your glass for a moment, trying to decide whether you chug it down like a shot, or sip it slowly. After a moment or so you swallow it whole and alert the bartender that a sweet heat like that will never stop you from your tasks.

"Another drink!" you call out, for you think nothing the bartender can bring will stop you. He chuckles to himself, and mutters something about foolishness in youth. But happily brings you another. "This one is packed with a little punch, and should put some spring into your step." he calls out.

You fight with this drink a bit, taking your time as you swallow it and try to savor the flavor. you almost feel revitalized as you feel your second wind come to you, ready to push forward. The bartender sees this in your eyes, and feels that he must find something else to help put you in your place.

You feel that you are nearing the end of your party filled night before your main quest. You start to ask the bartender for your bill, but are interupted by him, "What, you want to leave already? but we have barely even made it to the good stuff yet!" you take his challenge by offering to stay for one last pint of something before you head to the local inn.

The Bartender leans over the counter and looks at you with a smirk on his face. "Ok, I've got something that will drop every traveler to their knees." He leans behind the counter and pulls out an old dusty bottle.

"Admiral, the enemy is approaching!"

"Tell our men to ready their bows and spears. They're gonna pay for insulting Atlantis"

The Atlantean Gauntlet

Every civilization has their gods to protect them. Vikings had Aesir, greeks had Olympians, slavs, egyptians, chinese, native americans - you name it. When times would get dark, these gods would shield their servants from whatever disasters would be brought on them. Atlantis is no exception. Endangered, Atlanteans would call to the primordial beings called The Titans.

Gaia, the Titan Goddess of Earth.

Gaia is the personification of the earth and mother of all life. She is associated with forces of Nature, and has many sacred forests growing throughout the Atlantis. Rumors heard that when those forests are endangered, trees would come to life, turning from still wood into ferocious beasts.

Cronus, the Titan God of Harvest

Cronus is the king of Titans. He was the one who led his brothers and sisters in rebellion against his father Oranos, and the one who won the Titanomachy against the olympians, claiming the Staff of Titans. His most known deed was devouring his children in order to prevent the war against titans and olympians, which was sabotaged by his wife Rheia

Prometheus is known for being creator of mankind out of clay. The Titan uses his powers often, when the atlanteans are found in need of an army. Promethean creations guide valorous people of Atlantis into battle, with powers of fire and sword, they destroy any enemy that would threaten the home of the Titans

Atlas played the final part in Titanomachy, his power over the Sky was unmatched by the Olympians. Atlas' strength allowed him and his soldiers to defeat the olympian gods. After the Titan War was over, he claimed leadership over the land of daring thoughts and incredible creations, now known as Atlantis.

Atlantis as a land is located in the middle of the Great Ocean, which is ruled over by Oceanus and his daughters - water nymphs. If any outside force was to threaten the people of Atlantis, Oceanus would be their first line of defense. And who knows what horrors lie beyond its waters.

Ooc: Titanomachy wasn't won by the Titans, but then again, neither did Atlantis actually exist. We took a lot of creative liberty. =p

THE HAUNTLET
A haunted house told to contain vast treasures guarded by terrifying spirits and terrible puns from the underworld. Will you make it out alive?

The first thing you notice when you enter the house is that cobwebs cover everything, from the decaying furniture to the ornate coffins and piles on old bones lying on the floor. Lightning briefly illuminates the mansion through the shattered windows, revealing the hoard of spiders rushing towards you.

You manage to slay the spiders, but the ghosts that inhabit the house have been disturbed. They curse you with flashbacks and nightmares, and your attempts to forget them only hurt you further.

With the ghost apparently slain, you hurry upstairs in search of treasure. Down the hall, a door opens slightly. You walk in; no-one appears to be there. The light switch is missing and the window is boarded up. As you feel around the in the darkness you come across various bottles, a little knife, and a sandbag of some sort, with needles sticking in to it. You pick it up, and it suddenly bursts into flames...

Toad Trouble

You want to join a research team studying optimal conditions for animals to thrive. Your deck must contain at least 6 creatures.
Turns out your division is full of toadfish and pufferfish fans, although they are not entirely sure whether the evolved form -the pufferfish- is actually better suited for survival. When you arrive the rest of the team is furious at your lack of puffer-/toadfishes (or if you did bring them they are eager to compare). In order to redeem yourself (prove yourself in case you did bring toad-/pufferfishes), you have to show that the biome you prepared is superior to theirs.

The student assistant hasn't specialized in anything, you should try to overwhelm him. However his biome is richer than any of his colleagues'.

The research associate is a bit more focussed. Focussed on leaving a toxic atmosphere.

The first postgraduate learned that sometimes simple is better. He doesnt bother with toadfishes toxic properties and instead pools them together with stronger creatures that still wouldnt survive a fight with a toadfish and thus instead keep other threats away rather than try to kill the toadfishes.

You have successfully destroyed the biomes your Team was supposed to study and likely brought a biome that you werent supposed to study. The higher-ups prepare to fire you. However an investigation shows that the rest of your team was all incompetent. Their shortsighted desire to fight resulted in the mixture of biomes that just arent compatible, resulting in all but yours to be destroyed. Still, yours survived somehow, so the higher-ups are confident that if you are told what to do next time you might create the most stable biome anyone has so far. You now got your own research project!

AI controlled decks tend to have less restrictions, given the precedent set by existing cases such as Paradox. The Chroma mark is a bit iffy, but I don't have major qualms against it. Your submission is fine.

The Sadistic Chef

The sadistic chef has prepared a day's worth of meals for you.  Digest them all for a delicious reward..

Meal one
You call yourself a champion?!   Don't even think about skipping the most important meal of the day -- breakfast!  I'm heating up the pans right now with a bit of butter. Do you like your eggs scrambled, runny, hmm? Looks like you're going to get them many ways..

Meal two
How about a nice sushi buffet for lunch?  The best sushi chefs in Japan use rice, raw fish, eel, and remove the poison from the puffer fish. Gosh that's so lame.  I substitute cockatrice for rice, steel golem for eel, and leave the poison in the puffer for a heartier meal.  And why use raw fish when your fish can crawl inside your body alive?  Sushi chefs take a short bow before serving the food.  But I do you honor by taking a long bow.  Now eat! Itadakimasu!

It's time for a happy hour. I've concocted the most delicious electrum punch for you. You'll drink from a giant hourglass. Don't let the punch dissipate, and don't black out before siphoning it all.
