The first obstacle is a man who likes to lurk in the shadows. Guarded by a pair of werewolves, he brandishes his Dirks and animates them, empowering them with some of his own insanity. Meanwhile, he utilizes the shards of crystals filled with the negative emotions of hundreds of people to drain you of your energy until you are nothing but a shell of your former self filled with nothing but the Void.

Upon entering the next room, you find multiple holes in the ground. Out of one hole climbs a man who clearly hasn't taken a shower in months, spouting gibberish. The only word you can make out is "diamonds". The man looks at you and screams, causing many antlions to charge towards you; their actions as chaotic as their owner. The whole room falls into a state of discord as more holes quickly collapse from underneath you.

You have been informed that the third opponent used to be a mercenary, until an overload of work drove him into insanity. As you enter, he stares at you in silence. He mutters "Time to get to work," and charges. You stand your guard, but his attacks are too erratic to predict. This opponent proves to be an unstoppable force to reckon with.

The next opponent greets you with deranged laughter from above. You look up and see a winged girl looking down upon you. Surrounding her are long bows animated and powered by the girl's unstableness, raining arrows down upon you. As you try to dodge the arrows she flies freely, oblivious to the fact that she is in a closed room with no windows and a ceiling lamp illuminating the area.

Your last opponent isn't a person, but four. They are dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing and they look as if they have been trapped for an eternity. As you approach they suddenly drop to their knees and, while groaning, their bodies start to swell up. Eventually, swarms of scarabs burst out of their bodies and devour the remains of the bodies. Once they are done the swarm, with chaotic behavior, flies towards you ready to eat you alive. As you prepare yourself to fight you think, "I was not ready for any of the things that would happen today."

Spoiler for Deck Archetypes:
There's no story in the making of this gauntlet other than the methodical way it was designed to be hard to beat. The gauntlet contains 6 decks representing each of the major deck archetypes in effort to create a very diverse group of decks to hopefully have some counter for whatever you use against them. Each deck is a version of a famous pvp deck from each archetype to ensure effectiveness. All decks have the normal 100hp, 1 card per turn, 1 quantum from mark, and 6 max copies of non pillar/pendulum cards.

Descriptions of deck archetypes can be found here. Denial is more vague.

Spoiler for Rush:

As you can see all cards in this deck are for more damage output. Even explosions aren't included though they often increase the damage output by destroying shields. This deck and all following decks are as pure as possible to their archetype.

Spoiler for Gauntlet Of The 4 Elements:
Gauntlet Of The 4 Elements

This gauntlet takes you, the challenger, on a journey. Empedocles believed everything was created out of elements; fire, air, water and earth.
Not only will you face the might of the 4 classical elements, but you will also see how these elements interact and create something new.

The gauntlet is a challenge for anybody who wants to test a new unupgraded deck. You can even cheat a little by adding some upgrades to make it easier.
The gauntlet contains all different types of strategies, with the exception of a pure quanta denial deck.
You start with fire and end with an earth/fire duo. At the end of the run the player feels like he went full circle.

You stare at your glass for a moment, trying to decide whether you chug it down like a shot, or sip it slowly. After a moment or so you swallow it whole and alert the bartender that a sweet heat like that will never stop you from your tasks.

"Another drink!" you call out, for you think nothing the bartender can bring will stop you. He chuckles to himself, and mutters something about foolishness in youth. But happily brings you another. "This one is packed with a little punch, and should put some spring into your step." he calls out.

The Bartender leans over the counter and looks at you with a smirk on his face. "Ok, I've got something that will drop every traveler to their knees." He leans behind the counter and pulls out an old dusty bottle.

Spoiler for The Atlantean Gauntlet:
"Admiral, the enemy is approaching!"

"Tell our men to ready their bows and spears. They're gonna pay for insulting Atlantis"

The Atlantean Gauntlet

Every civilization has their gods to protect them. Vikings had Aesir, greeks had Olympians, slavs, egyptians, chinese, native americans - you name it. When times would get dark, these gods would shield their servants from whatever disasters would be brought on them. Atlantis is no exception. Endangered, Atlanteans would call to the primordial beings called The Titans.

Gaia, the Titan Goddess of Earth.

Gaia is the personification of the earth and mother of all life. She is associated with forces of Nature, and has many sacred forests growing throughout the Atlantis. Rumors heard that when those forests are endangered, trees would come to life, turning from still wood into ferocious beasts.

Cronus is the king of Titans. He was the one who led his brothers and sisters in rebellion against his father Oranos, and the one who won the Titanomachy against the olympians, claiming the Staff of Titans. His most known deed was devouring his children in order to prevent the war against titans and olympians, which was sabotaged by his wife Rheia

Prometheus is known for being creator of mankind out of clay. The Titan uses his powers often, when the atlanteans are found in need of an army. Atlantis as a land is located in the middle of the Great Ocean, which is ruled over by Oceanus and his daughters - water nymphs. If any outside force was to threaten the people of Atlantis, Oceanus would be their first line of defense. And who knows what horrors lie beyond its waters.

Ooc: Titanomachy wasn't won by the Titans, but then again, neither did Atlantis actually exist. We took a lot of creative liberty. =p

Spoiler for Toad Trouble:
Toad Trouble

You want to join a research team studying optimal conditions for animals to thrive. Your deck must contain at least 6 creatures.
Turns out your division is full of toadfish and pufferfish fans, although they are not entirely sure whether the evolved form -the pufferfish- is actually better suited for survival. When you arrive the rest of the team is furious at your lack of puffer-/toadfishes (or if you did bring them they are eager to compare). In order to redeem yourself (prove yourself in case you did bring toad-/pufferfishes), you have to show that the biome you prepared is superior to theirs.

The student assistant hasn't specialized in anything, you should try to overwhelm him. However his biome is richer than any of his colleagues'.

However an investigation shows that the rest of your team was all incompetent. Their shortsighted desire to fight resulted in the mixture of biomes that just arent compatible, resulting in all but yours to be destroyed. Still, yours survived somehow, so the higher-ups are confident that if you are told what to do next time you might create the most stable biome anyone has so far. The idea was to make a series of decks that are hard to beat. Most decks that are hard to beat have already been built at some point, so this is more about the arrangement than pure deckbuilding I think.

People have different ideas, and that's great, considering that the task was fairly open ended. Some people are going to go for the most difficult challenges, some for the ones most pleasing aesthetically or thematically, some for those most innovative or balanced from a game-design perspective, etc. All criteria are valid ways of judging, and the aggregate of opinions will determine the victor. Get those votes in!

I had lots of fun building decks and a story for this competition, I wanted to share my thoughts on each entry and how/why I did or didn't vote for the entries.

Key things I looked for when making my decision:
  • Each individual decks build
  • Relation between the set of decks
  • Relation between the individual decks and the story
  • The overall story being told
  • Originality of the decks

THE INSANITY GAUNTLET
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck look reasonable made and should be able to beat AI3 easily. While being completely upped helps this very eaisly, nothing wrong with choosing all upped over unupped or partial mixing.
- Nice relation between the decks. All utilize chaos power, and show a common theme.
- Overall most of the sections are nicely written and show that thought was put into the wording choices for the cards needed. One the last section I notice a continuity error though in that you state "Your last opponent isn't a person, but four." but that there are only 2 pharaohs instead of what I would expect to be four in the deck. Otherwise nicely written.
- The story clearly depicts that of a classic dungeon raid style gauntlet, where our hero moves from room to room facing different enemies(decks) along the way. Clearly stated and easy to follow the story.
- Each deck while are known strong combos, are not the obvious powerhouse choices for most PvP instances.

Deck Archetypes
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck are well known decks, and thus are heavily optimized to be strong. There is also much variance between the types of decks used so it will be much harder for a challenger to use a basic bland deck for beating the entire gauntlet.
- There is not much relation between these other than PvP strenth.
- No story at all, so that is kinda disappointing.
- Not really counting the initial description as a story, so this kinda has no flare to it.
- These decks are mainly just copies of other well known decks and have very little originality to them as I was able to find several in other posts in the forum.

THE RANDOMNESS GAUNTLET
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Strength was not the key target here as multiple random generating cards could make this an easy or hard gauntlet depending on what was generated. Either way fun and humor appear to be the target here.
- Decks relate nicely with the multiple randomness theme.
- No story here is understanding due to the random nature of not knowing what could happen but is kinda disappointing as that unknown potential could be told in great ways.
- Again no story is disappointing.
- Some of the decks while have low originality from being commonly used in pvp, others are decent in that they may not be strong but could be lots of fun.

Gauntlet Of The 4 Elements
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck looks decently made. it is nice to see a variance from the all upped decks by bringing this down to completely unupped deck. This would probably sit
- There is a very clear relation between the decks when paired with the image and description provided.
- A very minimal story does not help the relation between decks and story. Also the water main deck, is a light/water duo instead of a mono like the other 3 classic elements.
- A very minimal story description at the start. It gives a nice overview, but doesn't have the punch needed to help support the decks.
- While the decks do not seem highly original, there seems to have been thought in deciding which type of deck and combos were needed to help showcase the classic element.

Fall From Heaven Gauntlet
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck has some nice combos and could be strong against specific deck types brought. another all unupped deck set is nice to see.
- The decks don't have much direct relation other than through the story.
- The decks can be seen subtly through the story, especially since the story references the wardens and the divine seraph.
- A short and sweet type of story. it has a nice round tale to be told that wraps up where it started.
- The decks seem to be partially original in the sense that 2 out of 3 of them are not highly contested PvP decks.

Quest for the Holy Treasure
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Nicely made set of decks. There is a nice balance between upped and unupped, meaning this would probably not be a FG type of gauntlet nor would it be an AI3 style of gauntlet but somewhere in between.
- A common theme of light based decks is clear and easy to follow.
- Each deck has a nice short thematic description accompanying it.
- The story has an overall gauntlet feel to it. You are searching for something and facing opponents to gain that treasure. Also nice originality on having an additional reward for completing the gauntlet instead of just the average electrum+score.
- Most of the decks are variations on commonly strong light based PvP decks. Only exception I saw was the chroma mark weapons deck, and the super powered morning glory deck.

The Bartenders Blunder
Spoiler for Hidden:
This story is about booze! Obviously getting all 3 of my votes!  :P

The Atlantean Gauntlet
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck looks good and should fare well against several deck types.
- Other than the underlying story, there is not much theme connecting the decks individually.
- The story connects nicely to each deck. The addition of the small description can be clearly seen how it connects the decks.
- A decent story and some nice new fantasy about the mythical gods, but just that a story about gods. I would have loved to see more of clear path of facing the gods for the chance to become one or something similar having a clear path through the decks.
- The decks have some nice combos, even if fairly common. Nice ideas though on some of the variations though.

THE HAUNTLET
Spoiler for Hidden:
- Each deck has a nice strength to it, and these have a nice flow from rush to control to denial.
- Not a huge theme between the decks other than through the story about fearful entities (spiders, ghosts, dolls, and monsters).
- The connection to the decks hare clearly described and can easily be seen.
- The story while on the short side, helps support the decks themselves nicely. It is a clear gauntlet mission as you are going into a house and facing several fears.
- The originality of the decks isn't huge, as I have found a few in other places of the forum. I did like the rainbow though, as it was not nova/immo based and not all the creatures were the common choices for a rainbow effectiveness.

Toad Trouble
Spoiler for Hidden:
- A  nice progression of strength level moving from fully unupped to fully upped.
- The pufferfish is understandably the connecting factor in that they all have at least 6 copies.
- The connection between the writing for each aids the individual decks in its description.
- The overall story has a nice feeling to it, fighting fellow students and teachers for the chance to be the best student.
- The originality isn't bad on some of the earlier decks, even though they might not be the strongest.

The Sadistic Chef
Spoiler for Hidden:
- The decks look decently strong, and could prove to be a tough fight if matched with the right deck.
- The connecting theme is a little vague without the story behind it.
- The story connects each deck nicely, in that each description has a small note about at least one of the cards in it.
- The overall story is good, a slightly clear gauntlet style where you face several food dishes through the course of a meal.
- The originallity is ok on this one. No clear copies of other decks, but clear variations on well known strong combos.

These are just my own thoughts for making my votes. I focused more on theme and story line of the decks then overall power and challenge of the gauntlet. I loved reading through each submission, and my apologies if my comments or criticisms discourage anyone. Also apologies if my summary notes sway anybody else's votes.
something....something....something.....

One the last section I notice a continuity error though in that you state "Your last opponent isn't a person, but four." but that there are only 2 pharaohs instead of what I would expect to be four in the deck.

To clarify, the last deck is meant to have double the amount of cards shown in the deck code (ex. Instead of having 6 Chaos Powers, it has 12). While I did mention that with a small statement, it probably could have stood out a bit more:

Double Draw & Double Cards: Yes

Thanks for the criticism, by the way. This is the only thing I had to nitpick about it.

Huh, I won. Surprised people liked the idea of utilizing Chaos Power so much. I'll just post the ending to the Insanity Gauntlet for kicks.

Spoiler for Winning the Insanity Gauntlet:
After fighting five mentally unstable people, you leave feeling a little conflicted. You didn't really gain anything from the fights, and you don't even know why you were tasked to enter the asylum in the first place. You ponder this for a moment then continue walking, wondering why people are giving you looks of concern.

You got 3 Chaos Powers.

Cards like Dirk, Longbow or Elite Antlion are rarely seen in deck-building competitions. I am not sure, but I think this gave you some extra points...
