Title: Competition: Card Design War #2

Card Design War #2
Original Idea by Kuroaitou |  Art by Kuroaitou (and Xenocidius)

Survive as the ultimate card designer in this unique Card-Design PvP format!

MAIN RULES:
  • Before the Tournament begins, members are first asked to sign-up for the competition. A maximum of 32 players can sign-up; surplus players -might- be able to substitute for players who drop out, but this latter part only applies to the first round(s).
  • The Tournament is organized in a single-elimination format. Each round, participants are seeded against one another (brackets will be provided) and given a royalty-free piece of artwork to design a card concept. The artwork cannot be modified in any way, shape, or form.
  • Starting from the first round, there will be a special set of requirements to what the card does or how it must behave. (i.e. - the card cannot deal direct damage to the player/the card must be of the element X, etc.)
  • Participants post their card ideas in the Card Idea Competition Submissions sub-board, located here: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/board,232.0.html
During each new 'round', they must post their cards in the EXACT topic they started. See the format of how to do this here:
    http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,36746.0.html
  • All cards are then accumulated in the voting phase; each of the 'card battles' are shown on display in a single post, with a poll for each 'card battle' (every two cards in a 'duel' has a poll with two options). Members are then asked to vote for either idea from the two card ideas that are competing against one another. Cards that fit the requirements accurately and are innovative will generally succeed; ones that don't will generally fail and will most likely be dropped.
  • Once the winners of that round are declared, the seeding is repeated and new art assigned, with different limitations for the round and new polls. This process repeats until there is only one left standing...
  • ...and the winner will get a (semi) customized award icon for their efforts!

Because this is the second Card Design War, there is a new twist on the entire tournament scheme; because we are currently being reigned by Death, there is a new part to the entire competition: Ghosts.

WHAT/WHO ARE GHOSTS?
  • You! ...Well, if you lose. Every round, the losers of each match-up automatically become a 'ghost' upon losing.
  • As a ghost, you have a skill called 'Curse'. After the voting phase is over, and the winners are announced, the 'ghosts' may then choose to inflict a 'Curse' on their challenger. Note that in order to continue haunting your opponent in your ghost form, you must guess how many votes they will have in their match-up against their new opponent; if you are within 2 votes of their total, you may continue haunting. Otherwise, the organizer will cast an exorcism and remove all ghosts that round who fail to guess within the number of votes of their targeted opponent.
    • Curse: For the following turn, you may curse your opponent's match-up by adding an additional requirement for their card from a selection of requirements that the organizer will provide. These additional requirements are not as specific as the round requirements, but can often add more complexity to the card designing process for your opponent.
    • If you do not 'Curse', you can still choose to 'guess' your opponent's estimated number of votes for the following turn to continue 'watching over them'. If you don't provide a guess for the votes however, you will be exorcised automatically.
      • Ghost Phase:
      • Curse (guess how many votes your target will have next round) -> Select an additional requirement for your target

Will you be the Card Making Master? Or just a Card Creating Disaster?

NOTE: Xenocidius'/Planplan's Card Image Builder is found here: http://elements.xenocidius.com/card/
I will not penalize users who forget to post their tables, but not doing so can affect who will vote for your card if the format of your cards are poorly formatted and explained messily.

  • Would it be possible to have the vote anonymous? Vote for a number instead of a name. This way the most popular player will not have an advantage due to their name and only skills will count.
I definitely agree with this!
  • Is it possible to negotiate with Zanz to have a card put in game from the winner?
This would be awesome!

Edit: quick questions:
  • Would it be possible to have the vote anonymous? Vote for a number instead of a name. This way the most popular player will not have an advantage due to their name and only skills will count.
  • In the possession case, the number of votes that [the ghost] gathers from that duel are permanently 'stolen' from the two challengers, but whoever of the two main duelists has more votes advances. What is the difference with a normal vote then?
  • Is it possible to negotiate with Zanz to have a card put in game from the winner?
1. Of course. This will also make poll creation easier, as I'll usually only have to put down either 'option 1' or 'option 2'. :)

2. I actually forgot to add in a rule; with 'possession', you can actually redistribute the points you receive to either your target (so that you can continue haunting them if you think that their number of votes was outside your limit), OR to the target's enemy (again, to affect the point totals if you want to continue haunting). Note that possession might be trickier to do than one would think: you have to make a card that will generate some interest so that people would vote for it over the ACTUAL candidates, and then you'd also have to predict who would get what votes so that your vote distribution works in your favor of 'haunting' the next individual.

...if this is too complicated, then I'll just have it as a normal vote still. ^^;

3. Very difficult, but it could be possible. However, I doubt that Zanz would hear me anyway considering that I have no real authority nor access to him. Of course, if SG came back... ^^;

You do not want this to happen. Sure the quality at the end of these competition usually is comparable with the cards in game but in the off chance it is not we would want another checkpoint first. That said, Zanz might wish to view the entries with higher consideration then average suggestions.

We just need 10 more participants for a full 32-player roster. Otherwise, I'll have to scale it back to 16 players... :(

Thanks for all those who signed up so far! ^_^ If you have any major complaints or issues with the rules, please state them in this thread, and I may actually remove them if such changes were to increase activity.

I like the curse, nothing to say about that.
But i find that possession is a little complicated. You have to make a card, redistribute points, guess the number of votes (before or after the redistribution?)...
Wouldn't be nice to give the ghost the possibility to go back into the game, if his/her card is more favored than the other two challengers' cards?

the above post pretty much highlights the main reason i am disinterested in this tournament- not that the rules are unclear or that the ghost rules could be further refined, but the existence of extra "twists" in a card design challenge.  feels a little like an m night shamalamadingdong movie.  personally i feel it takes away from the competition, rather than adds to it.  thats just my opinion and im sure others feel differently.

another issue i brought up in chat is the purity of the voting, and means to ensure detachment between the card submitter and the voters, so that a card designer cannot simply ask his friends to vote for his entry to move on in the competition.  but that may be a topic for another thread.

IMHO, theManuz's post and your post are two different views on the same subject rather than points that support each other - Manuz is asking to see if the concept can be improved or changed and you're suggesting that the extra "Ghosts" thing takes away from the competition's quality. (Do note we haven't even seen this action yet and PvP events are probably more complicated or have more bells and whistles than this.) I personally feel that the twists help add a little excitement into a rather straightfoward tournament of 1vs1 polls that do produce interesting results but can become a bit repetitive over time.  Ghosts help to alleviate this by making sure participants stay on their toes and design interesting cards.

Also note that being a Ghost is optional - if you lose and don't want to do anything, you don't have to.

I like the curse, nothing to say about that.
But i find that possession is a little complicated. You have to make a card, redistribute points, guess the number of votes (before or after the redistribution?)... Before. If it was after, you could just redribute X points to get your target guess.
Wouldn't be nice to give the ghost the possibility to go back into the game, if his/her card is more favored than the other two challengers' cards?
To be fair, this is a tournament where losers are eliminated. Having a ghost go back into the game complicates the brackets and basically is like saying "Losses don't count", which could be kind of annoying if a contestant who has worked hard the entire competition gets his victory stolen by a lucky guesser.
another issue i brought up in chat is the purity of the voting, and means to ensure detachment between the card submitter and the voters, so that a card designer cannot simply ask his friends to vote for his entry to move on in the competition.  but that may be a topic for another thread.
Yes, that's most likely for another thread, but telling your friends to simply vote for you in the competition technically breaks our Advertising Policy (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,16251.0.html) - you may only promote the competition itself outside of the thread, not specific cards.

Since we can't moderate PMs or real life chatter, the best we can do is to rely on the honor system. If you can't let your card win fairly, then why bother? Part of the competition is the fun, after all. ;)

After a little thinking on time constraints, I have decided that removing the 'possess' ability is the best way to go. Please check the rules for the update (ghosts can only 'curse', and not possess their target).

Being a ghost should be an optional thing; if you lose the tournament and don't want to participate anymore, it's completely fine. But if you feel a little bit vengeful about your loss, adding a small requirement onto the person's special requirements can be interesting and provide a fun form of challenge to the player you lost to. That said, Possession probably doesn't fit this 'vengeance' concept very well, so taking it out (which greatly simplifies that ghost part as well) makes this competition run a lot smoother.

Only a few hours left to join folks! Please get the number to 32 if you can! ^^;;;

ROUND 1 VOTING PHASE HAS BEGUN! PLEASE read this topic here for details on voting: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,36747.msg492759#msg492759

There are 16 'duels'; take your time when looking over the cards, and feel free to click on the card images (they link to the challenger's page for details).

I'd like to point out that there are a certain number of cards that have failed to fulfill all of the Special Requirements on time, and as such, those cards will lose 10% of all votes per requirement they forgot to fulfill:

Nice hex. That is the sweet spot where cards get an optimal mix of power and speed. I thank you for not choosing Species Hexing (Creature) just as I wouldn't have chosen Elemental hexing (Air).

I suppose. In it's defense though, the 0 | 0 was intentional to synergize with buff cards and give more oppotunities with other elements.

You picked a simple concept that is well-known on the forums and creates new decktypes, which would've probably required me to make something of Quantum Locket-quality to bypass. Absol's curse also threw a monkey wrench into my ideas (unlike your curse, which was completely negligible) and as a result the combined factors forced me into a more limited situation than you.

Good match.

@Themanuz : Both cards are affiliated with darkness in some way and involve spawning cards that can swap positions. I'm afraid they may be too similar for some player's tastes unless a decent explanation is provided for differences.

EDIT: just to hear other people opinions... how similar do you think these cards are?
Same core idea. Different implementation at the timing level.
They are close enough that I would suggest altering Stealth Flyer (because you did find a better timing implementation). Unfortunately it is really hard to change elements in the Crucible. This might imply trying to find an Air creature theme to fit the mechanic or it might imply trying to jump polls.

However there is a possible alternative of submitting it separately. For this I would suggest getting Rutarete's permission and moomoose's approval. The reason I suggest getting moomoose's approval is that I have found that moomoose's opinions acts as a good barometer for if the forum would approve.

@ZBlader
Yeah the curses tipped the scales a bit. Even with the curses and my idea, I was very nervous that you would pull out a Quantum Locket level card to match my entry.
Sidenote: I thought the 0|0 creature was weird but I agree that it added depth (multiple balance equations) to the card.

Good luck, TheManuz. May the best card win.
Good luck to you! It will be an interesting match!

ROUND 3 voting has now ended! Check the spoiler below OR the following link for what you should do if you lost (i.e. - became a ghost). Have fun, and again, please ask questions if you're confused: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,36747.msg492759#msg492759

GHOST PHASE:
BOO!
Round 3 is now over; the losers of the Round 3 have now become ghosts. All other ghosts of Round 2 (excluding those below) have been 'exorcised' (now no longer part of the game). Check the brackets to see your standings!

The following players who are still haunting their targets from Round 2 are:

Vineroz (haunting TheManuz)
Izaya (haunting OldTrees)

Because of Death's reign, the fallen have now become temporary ghosts to haunt their victorious enemies! Players that have lost who still wish to participate in the Card Design War (as a ghost) must do these two things:

Example:
I'm guessing that zanzarino will get 1 vote the following turn.
Naming Blight: X, Q, Z

Post your 'Curse' on this topic before the deadline ends, otherwise, sit back and congratulations to all the players who won!

Not going to.

I'm guessing OldTrees will get 13 votes.

Eternal Debt: The NAME of one of the cards needs to start and end with a vowel (the vowel doesn’t need to be the same - examples: "Eagle's Eye", "Avian Sorcery", "Igloo".). 'Y' acts as a vowel.

Got my revenge on Z.
Now you have to continue my pursuit.

Also my guess on final matchup:
OldTrees vs TheManuzStill, good luck to everyone!

Bah, I had to be away for this Ghost round, so I couldn't get a curse in. :/

Oh well, good luck OT and Drake.

ROUND 4 HAS BEGUN!

Check the brackets HERE for who you're matched up against! - http://images.challonge.com/CardDesignWar2.png

Check the post HERE for what pictures and requirements you must use/fulfill in your card idea - http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,36747.msg492759#msg492759

If your name is placed above the corresponding spoiler, watch out! (You've been cursed by your former opponent's restless soul, and must obey their requirements as well)

* - Sorry about the delay. Real life issues have been partially resolved. ^^;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Round 4):
  • The COST of your unupped card has to be equal to the total number of votes you have accumulated throughout this entire competition, divided by 10. (Round up or down if necessary – for example: if you have 37 total votes, divide it by 10, and you have 3.7 or ‘4’ for the COST)
I don't know how many votes i got!

This round requirements are really hard, i'll see what comes into my mind!

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Round 4):
Both the unupped and upgraded card forms must have different mechanics UNLESS it’s an Other card.
Does this mean both unupped and upgraded need new mechanics or are we referring to Toadfish | Pufferfish kind of cards?

Quote
If the card is a permanent, its ability must -snip- OR it requires stacking
Would pillars count?

I don't know how many votes i got!
Source: The Bracket

I had 18 + 16 + 11 = 45
So my unupped costs 5.

In regards to the creature restrictions, is the healing only to the player, or could it be directed to anything?  Would buffing a creature's health count as healing per se?

Toadfish | Pufferfish are okay cards; they have two different mechanics technically, but centered around the same theme (poisoning/infections).

Pillars count. :)

Directed to anything, and buffing a creature's health can count as healing, yes.

It was a good game. Unfortunately, I did not field a very good card. (The toadfish | pufferfish requirement hurt as did my knowledge of prior ideas.)
I will wait until after Xeno so I can give an equivalent curse.

Because of Death's reign, the fallen have now become temporary ghosts to haunt their victorious enemies! Players that have lost who still wish to participate in the Card Design War (as a ghost) must do these two things:

  • Guess how many votes their opponent will receive the following turn
  • Choose from one of the following 'Curses' that the opponent must also deal with the following turn
    • Elemental Fury) The winner’s card CANNOT be one of the following elements (name 4 elements):
    • Species Taboo) The winner’s card CANNOT be of the following card type (creature, spell, or permanent):
    • Naming Blight) The winner's card CANNOT have the following 3 letter consonants (not vowels!) in their name (name 3 letters):
Example:
I'm guessing that zanzarino will get 1 vote the following turn.

I agree. This is a good hex that does stretch creativity without requiring compromise in card design.

I'm not guessing the final votes. (call that 9001 if you must)

CONGRATULATIONS TO TheManuz, the WINNER of CARD DESIGN WAR #2! :)

The final votes are in folks; to all the other contestants who joined this long and enduring competition, I extend my deepest thanks for your patience in getting the final match down (considering the forum transition and whatnot). Thank you to all those who voted, created, or otherwise viewed/participated in this competition, and if you have any major feedback or suggestions (aside from removing ghosts), feel free to post here before the thread is locked.

Grats TheManuz, you really have talent in this. The same art which gives me victory, also gives you yours.

As for Drake, i must say i'm impressed you managed to go this far. Unfortunately your last card mechanics are too hard, and that impacts your vote. Better luck next time.

If you had to rank your submissions from best to worst, how would you rank them?

Wow! :D I Won! Thanks to everyone!
I have one feedback on the submission, but i don't know if it's hard to implement.

When thinking about my card, i often saw that my opponent posted before me (it happened everytime, i'm a slow thinker/poster).
I tried to not look at my opponent's card to avoid being influenced, but at the same time i feared coming with a similar mechanic and being accused of copying.
Keeping the submissions secret until the voting would encourage accuracy and not speed of submission, and if both players come up with a similar mechanic, we are sure that no one copied and the best implementation would win.

Congratulations TheManuz.

If you had to rank your submissions from best to worst, how would you rank them?
Interesting question... let me review them!

I think the less interesting is Impact | Hard Impact.
It's a not-so-new concept, and would not affect the meta. However i think it could be added without disturbing the game. I think to it like a Seraph, nothing new but a nice addition.

Then it comes Eerie Mirage | Eerie Mirage.
It's a nice card, but when i look at it, it seems still a little complicated. Maybe if i could have the opportunity to test it in-game i would change mind, but i'm not sure how to feel about this card. Maybe i'm underestimating it, i don't know.

Then i put Uzmah Larva | Uzmah Larva.
I'm satisfied with this mechanic, and i feel it would add something to the game, while not being unbalanced. I put this in 3rd position only because it's simply an "Oty for permanents", so it's not really original.

Then i put Futhark | Uthark.
It's simple, but i really like this. It's random (because of the deck shuffling), it counters bad draws and nightmares, and i see it as a useful addition in many decks. It will not change the meta, however, but makes things go smoother.

And my personal first place is Time Crack | Time Disruption.
This is my first place because both mechanics are really original IMHO, and they're both useful.
My personal favorite is Time Disruption, because of the mass effect (i like spells that affect the field) and it's Fractal-like nature and combos with Mummys and Skeletons, but i really like even Time Crack, i feel it would speed up many decks and increase combo possibilities.

I will surely realize and post Time Crack and Time Disruption as separate cards. I'll do it even for Futhark | Uthark and i'd like to do it for Uzmah Larva too.
The Eerie Mirage is too similar to a Rutarete submission, so i don't know. I'll ask to him if i ever decide to make it, but for now i have a nice bunch of cards to make!
