Let me present you Higurashi's first custom avatar! This one was one of my favorites from when I was a newb, and it also has nice, distinct colors which helps to make it look more recognizable when it's ready. ^^

How I did it was to create a 50x50 grid and resize the image to fit to it. I then put the grid on the image to pixelate it. After the image was pixelated, I could roughly tell which gridcell had what kind of color in it. Below is how my work looked after it was first done. My submission above contains some modifications.

I did the same thing as EDIT: Higurashi's Avatar Two's Artist, except that I automated the process instead of manually picking each individual cell. I made a bunch of them, each taking literally two minutes, and ultimately decided on one.

Man, this was a hard decision to make.

Voted for Physsion here (considering that I didn't want to selfishly vote on myself ). Here are the points I gave to him on my scale:

• Recognizability: 5/5
• Use of distinct colors: 5/5
• Complexity: 3/5
• Level of Successful Artistic Freedom: 4/5. (This cathegory means that you change specific colors from the original to make your art look better, because you have a limited palette)
• Scale: 5/5. Even though I don't have access to the source material, I kinda see his art fit in the bigger image.
