Yes, it's allowed. Since the submitted artwork was still done in 5 minutes. You can try over and over to make it, just as long as you start with a blank canvas for your final submission.

So it is also allowed to prepare colours in the color tablette and do other stuff, as long as you start with a blanc 600*600 page for the 5 mins count? -> though I guess saving something in copy&paste is prohibited xD

My first attempt was blank.

That's right, I hadn't used paint in a long time and didn't get the version on my comp, so it took 6 minutes just to figure out how to get the right taint of brown. Would you rather have me submit that instead? (oh wait, that one's illegal even )

There is no penalty for practicing and i don't consider the set up of your colors part of the creation process. It's part of the set-up process.
