Does it create 3 new dim shields?
even if it created only 1, you could get a total of 12.

Yup, too OP with nightmare against enemy pillars.
If it doesn't target pillars... there's not much else that stacks (permanent shards and Bonewall, that's about it).

Dim shield, like Sundial, uses counters instead of stacking. It would only spawn 1 copy.
Nightmare + Whirlwind is a two element combo that will achieve little more than 2 earthquakes could. The ability to have over 30 turns of dim shield, however, is against all that this card stands for. I guess it needs to die as cutting the self targeting aspect would ruin most of the lesser interactions that make it fun and quirky.

What we can argue is that shields and weapons are stacks, not slots.
That leaves dims. Now to deal with sundial.

Spawning one copy is arguably enough, doubling the duration of protection from 6 dims or 6 dials.

Your comparison to earthquake is legitimate, but it's harder to draw 2 out of 6 Earthquakes than it is to draw 1+1 out of 6+6 Whirlwind and Nightmare, which means this combo, although a duo, can probably be gotten out faster. That, and Whirlwind has versatility outside of killing pillars, while Earthquake counts as dead cards in the face of a pillarless. Just food for thought.
