An use that is already in game for creature position is the attack order, that is very relevant against bonewall (you want your biggest hitters attacking last) or if you have antimattered creatures (to finish the opponent its best that they are attacking last) or with vampire creatures when you are finishing the opponent (if they attack first you finish the game with more HP).
And then there is flooding, you may want to sacrifice this for a more important creature if this is in the center.
Yes. Aside from the buffs, its uses are all only really technical. But it gives more precedence in affecting field positioning and more room for the potential of that being an important concept.
