As a card designer this was an interesting and unique opportunity for me. First we decided on a theme - that the helms would increase "intellect"; the mark boost idea came from this. Each helm also gives a unique alibility to yourself based on that theme and their element.
"Random effects lean in your favour" - this means that Dusk Mantle and Fog Shield have an extra, say, 30% less chance to miss if the opponent has it, and an extra 30% chance to miss if you have it. Things like Chaos Seed rank each effect from highest to lowest - for example, Parallel Universe might be number 1, Lightning might be number 2, then your opponent will usually get a high-ranked effect from it while you will usually get a high-ranked effect. If your opponent is also wearing this they cancel each other out.
What are the pros and cons of introducing a new slot rather than converting the Shield slot into a Generic Armor slot (Shield, Helm, Tunic)?
The obvious pro is that you can have more than one in play at a time. Helms and shields are thematically different; helms enhance your mind and grant you abilities, shields defend you.
Plus, considering that a shield is held while a helm is worn on the head, it seems to make sense that an elemental should be able to use both at once.
Some technical aspects:
We decided the Helm slot should probably be in slot 14.
Thank you all for your feedback and keep it coming.
