Considering I added that it would work for activate abilities, I would say no.

Hmm, this along with Eclipse and Cloak brings out 3 Darkness Field cards. I'm not sure that's quite balanced in terms of mechanics, since I'd expect Earth to have more to do with the field, but meh...

Personally, I think real-life darkness's capability to overshadow vast areas like when night falls or when fear (often associated with darkness) fills up your psyche fits with field effects. I dunno, this could be a weak argument.
