This appears to be intended as a characteristic weakness by Zanz, but unlike other PC lacking Elements Life also suffers from being able to defend itself with various other methods when confronted by such cards or strategies that would typically be answered by permanents. Enter Envy, a soft PC that can also act as a tricky form of permanent manipulation. It punishes the opponent for using powerful permanents like Dim Shield and Cloak and allows Life to take them for its own - one Dim Shield by an unsuspecting player can give the player a Dim Shield chain of their own, causing a deadlock. But what does envy have to do with life?

Life is an element of advancement and adaptation. Similar to how 's Mitosis and 's Fractal are biological/magical variants of mass creature production, Envy represents Life's ability to mimicry the opponent's board state. (Admittedly, Mimicry would've likely been a better name, but Envy has a certain flavorful ring to it. Nothing to do with green here.)
