Also battles rarely take place over large enough areas for a path to make sense as a landmark.

This card isn't too bad, except the upped is basically a soul catcher that delays all non-life creatures. I recommend you change that.
Paths and landmarks are suitable for any situation. I assume you know the scale of a battlefield based on comparison to actual ground? We have Flooding, which tends to happen in wide areas. Saying that an environmental card shouldn't be implemented because its imagery is "too big" for a pixelated and bland "battlefield" is, imo, not important.
