ART: | Zanzarino (recolored) | IDEA: | preimage | NOTES: | Although a card with similar name and art had been already suggested (Sleet | Hail http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=10115.0), the concept is quite different from that one.
As the card text says, each of the opponent's permanents other than shields has a chance to be frozen for 1 turn when this spell is cast. Permanents cannot be activated while frozen. Frozen weapons do not attack, frozen clusters of pillars or pendulums produce no quanta, frozen Shards of Gratitude do not heal the owner, and frozen Boneyards do not generate Skeletons upon a creature's death. This does not affect permanents which are considered to require no 'activation': frozen Nightfall (Eclipse) and Flooding (Inundation) affect the whole field as well. If a Sundial is frozen, still it prevents creatures from attacking, but its owner cannot use its ability Hasten to draw a card. If a Sanctuary is frozen, it does not heal its owner for 4 HP but still protects the owner's hand and quanta pool. This spell removes Cloak on the opponent's field.
For nonstacking permanents the chance is 50%. For clusters of permanents, such as pillars, pendulums, or probably shards after upcoming patches, all permanents in a cluster are frozen simultaneously, but the chance that it happens is lower. More precisely, the chance for a cluster being frozen is (50/N)%, where N is the number of permanents in the cluster. For example, a cluster with 10 pillars has a 5% chance to be frozen when Hail is cast. Immaterial (protected) permanents are unaffected.
The duration of freezing effect caused by this spell is not cumulative but overriding. It may reduce the duration of a weapon that is already frozen by other source, such as Voodoo Doll or Ice Bolt. Maintenance and (lasting) duration wear off normally for frozen permanents. For example, a frozen Flooding (still functioning) consumes , and a frozen Sundial is automatically destroyed after 1 turn as well. Adding a pillar in a frozen cluster does not remove its frozen status. However, if a frozen permanent is destroyed and a new one is played in the same position, that permanent does not enter the game frozen. This rule coincides with what happens around weapons in the current game: casting a new weapon over a frozen one causes the new one to be frozen, but casting a new weapon after destroying the frozen one makes the new one unfrozen. Casting Shockwave to opponent player destroys his/her frozen weapon, but has no effect on the other frozen permanents.
One problem is that this card is a bit inconsistent with healing effects: it is intended to cause permanents like Empathic Bond, Shard of Gratitude, and Sanctuary to stop healing their owner, but in the current game a frozen Druidic Staff continues healing even while frozen. | SERIES: | |
