Other is not an element.
Familiar Spirit itself counts, so there is an automatic +1/+1.

Trigger skill: Familiar Spirit is changed to a random element, and Elemental Familiar to the element of your choice (random if Other card is chosen), once per turn.

I'm not sure if targeting quanta pools is possible yet.  Maybe you could have the upgraded one target a creature or pillar and copy its element?

If I understand it correctly I could fractal photons and and play a couple of these and then switch to light (+20|+20 or something like that) then switch to something else then switch back to light and gain +20|+20 again? That's a crazy high growth rate even if it requires a few turns to set up I think you need to drop the retain stats feature and even then it seems really strong with fractal (only having to pay 3 :rainbow for something stronger than a dragon.)

That's a good point, perhaps it should be like Scarab and set its stats rather than gain stats each turn.

Should remove 'gain' from the text then.

Would this work? Harmony resets at the end of every turn. Change element adds +1/+1 permanently for each use, while Harmony still resets? Both now cost 5  :rainbow

Thematically why would something that harmonizes with other creatures gain stats for switching elements? I think the gaining because of creatures on the field is a good growth mechanic that doesn't need additional help, especially considering the myriad of fractal decks.

For the unupped version, a random element is chosen. Without the +1/+1 gain, multiple uses of the ability would be fairly useless, as there is no guarantee that the element it becomes corresponds with the creature you're fractalling. As for the upped, I suppose the permanent stat gain can be removed.

True the random element is an blockage to great a stat buff but every card needs a decent reason to upgrade it and that would be the reason although honestly 3 :rainbow is pretty cheap to change it so randoming an element for the unupped isn't a huge downside and it could always be run in a deck with novas, fractal, fractal fodder, and this, since most fractalled creatures are pretty cheap you just fractal what you need
