NOTES:
Freeze means nothing can happen to it. You can't gain or lose it, you can't play any cards or use any abilities that use it.
If you're wondering what Vitrify means, it normally means that a viscous liquid is supercooled to become a harder, more brittle state. In this case, what's becoming solid (freezing) is actually energy, but I decided to use it anyway since it was the closest I could get.

Despite devourer or firefly, Why not just freeze target pillar stack?

Despite devourer or firefly, Why not just freeze target pillar stack?
Because you would take out the best part of it
You can't gain or lose it, you can't play any cards or use any abilities that use it.

But its only for 1 turn, however I see your point, its better in a sense, but since this is a spell, you could only use this 6 times.
I was thinking maybe buffing it up but not so much, for example:

upped: freeze target quanta pool for 1 turn. 50% chance to freeze for 2 turns.

I think it's powerful enough already. It's like a single-element Silence, but you're not gaining quanta or using abilities either!

I was about to suggest making the upped able to target 2 pools, then remembered it would kill duos for a turn, it's tough enough on mono's as it is. It might just be me, but i feel the cost isn't quite right; not sure if + or - though

With Silence the opponent can play no cards for 3 :aether.
With Vitrify the opponent can play no cards or gain quanta for 4 :water.

So basically you deny all quanta gain from one element (consider all monos and duos which would be most of the decks used) for 1 :water. That's OP...

Well, since it seems to be accepted that it needs a nerf, how's this sound?

Vitrify / Vitrify
5 :water / 5 :water
Spell / Spell
Target quanta pool is frozen for 1 turn. / Target quanta pool is frozen for 1 turn. 50% chance to be frozen for 2 turns.

I think it is good as it is.(at the most +1 :water cost) This version is complicated and expensive ( maybe except the upped version)

Compare it to Silence

Cost5 :water3 :aether
strengthsmono or duo cards and abilities blocks any hand
Weaknessnearly useless against  :rainbowDoesn't block abilities

I think there should be some kind of compensation, such as "opponent's pillars generate double quanta next turn" and/or "opponent draws two cards (until his/her hand is full) next turn." Adding 12 cards of silence to the meta-game is just...bad.
