Well... I think I would never sacrifice quite good creature for mere 1 :life per turn... (especially it lasts only 2/3 turns  :o) and it even requires  :death quanta  :o I recommend to change the skill or buffing it somehow.

Interesting, but I'm not sure I'ld really use it as it stands right now...

I think it would be much more viable if you flipped the abilities. I.e. have it turn into a compost heap when killed and make the deep roots ability the activated ability (i.e. random permanent destrcution on a stick).

Since the destruction is random, it should stay pretty well balanced.

E.g. you could use:
"Rot: Spawns a compost heap upon death.
:death :death : Deep Roots
Destroy a random permanent."

Whether the glass is half full or half empty is a moot point. It is always filled to the brim. It is only a matter of by what. The real question is: What fills you?

Would it be better if I changed the Deep Roots ability by allowing the player to choose which permanent to destroy?

I think it would be ok, but  :death quanta for destroying permanents seems not to fit thematically actually. I guess  :gravity is better for physical objects. Compare to:

:death is what happens to living entities IMO.

Well, my idea was more of the Ent having roots intertwined with the permanent. When it dies, the Ent gets uprooted and the roots topple the permanent.  :P

Well, Death is just as fitting as Entropy (Butterfly Effect), and I think the "proc staple effect upon death) is actually a pretty Death-like effect.

Something like ":death : When this dies, destroy (last) targeted permanent."

I really do like the random permanent destruction idea. There are already a lot of cards that allow direcrted PC, lots that allow directed CC and lots that allow non-directed CC... There are none that allow non-directed PC. This would be a nice way to introduce a relatively novel mechanic.
