I define core by what the author will never be willing to remove. It is sometimes, mistakenly, not the primary effect.

considering it was there at the start, and the second version, and the intent of the card after making a reference to the cat in the notes, i would say its core.  not to mention if the death effects portion is removed, it is no longer tied to death in any way shape or form.

he has removed the cat comparison from the notes, where he tried to justify it not being 'OP' relative to the cat because it 'requires an additional creature', but the wording of the effect has not changed from the earlier version, leading me to believe it is still supposed to trigger death effects.

Good point.


Both repeated death effects and recovery have been done before. It might be wise to use a different take on Altar.
