TASK II
Card Design - ShardsDarkness elementals are known for their fondness of 'sharing' and so I found the concept of making a shard for Darkness with that name amusing. It's meant to provide new strategies and synergies for one of Darkness' cards in the game: Namely, Nightmare. I've wanted an in-element means of taking advantage of the fact that the opponent's hand is suddenly filled with a creature of your choice in-game for a while, and while I'm not sure this card would be a good addition to the game, I think it's an interesting idea.
With this Shard on the field, Nightmare can effectively become a Fractal you have less control over, on top of its other effects. Each shard is supposed to be more powerful for its aligned element, while still being usable by the rest: I chose to reflect this by making it so neither player's Darkness cards can be played by the opponent; this keeps a Mono-Darkness deck's cards completely safe from being played by the opponent, which is to its advantage, while adding strategical aspects to the card. For example, while a true Mono-Darkness may be safe from the opponent taking advantage of this shard's effect, it cannot actually use the Shard's effect itself, due to a lack of any quanta besides Darkness'. Shard of Sharing also borrows another aspect of Fractal, in that using Nightmare to generate on-element creatures is less effective than if the targeted creature were from a different element, which encourages duos when using the card in a deck.
A viable deck built around the SoS/Nightmare synergy could include an inexpensive or free creature from another element as a target for Nightmare after playing Shard of Sharing. If the opponent's hand happens to be empty, playing a Damselfly and then a Nightmare allows you to drain sixteen HP from the opponent and get nine creatures with 2ATK on the field in one turn. Since the opponent's hand is now empty again, more Nightmares can be played directly after at maximum efficiency. A second Nightmare nets an additional drained sixteen HP and eight more Damselflies for a total of seventeen. A third would do a total of 16+16+16+2x23=94 damage. Only six of the newest Damselflies would be playable because there are only twenty-three slots for creatures on the field, leaving two in the opponent's hand. A fourth Nightmare would inflict an additional twelve damage at this point, bringing the damage done to 106, meaning a hand of four Nightmares, a Damselfly, and a Shard of Sharing could potentially OTK. However, these numbers all assume that the opponent has absolutely no cards in their hand and no shield up, which isn't common, making the OTK more difficult to actually preform in practice.
Mindgate decks already use the deck of their opponent against them. Drawing their pillars and other quanta cards through Mindgates makes it easy to have the right quanta needed to play cards through the shard's effect. The card's double-edged nature is more prominant here, however, as the cards copied through Mindgate are easily played against you if they are not played quickly enough. Another kind of deck that can make use of Shard of Sharing is the ever-popular rainbow deck. Because it uses quanta from all elements, it can feasibly play the cards of any non-Darkness opponent. I'm not exactly sure I'd agree with giving another great advantage to a deck-type that already has a lot going for it, so the shard might need a nerf or other kind of change.
As far as nerfs to the shard go, I've considered various means of changing it. Increasing the cost is one way to go about it, but it just makes it more comparatively viable for rainbow decks they possess more quanta to play an Other card. I could have it drain quanta when played, possibly all non-Darkness quanta, which would actually let the opponent get the first chance to use its effect. I'm not sure how I feel about that, however. The third option I can think of is to add an upkeep of darkness quanta to the card, ala Flooding. This could prevent the shard from being tossed into random rainbows. However, requiring darkness quanta for an upkeep limits it to being used in decks with darkness quanta, which has the unwanted effect of making it more of a Darkness card and less of an Other card. Perhaps the shard's ability could be an activated one...?
Well, it's not like this card is going to get
anywhere close to the game and this is already fairly lengthy. This
is my entry for Task II of the Trials of Darkness, by the way, if the text at the top isn't technically explicit enough.
