I start from a black & white ink sketch and then I scan it in and use software to edit the image

The "smoke figure" in the scythe image was done entirely using the gradient tool in GIMP

nice u got a nack 4 this nd thnx 4 the gimp link but it wont launch i do hv a mac nd it keeps telling me tht its unable 2 launch

Hmm . . . I don't run Mac so I'm afraid I'm no help there. Have you tried pixlr yet? it's a fairly similar program, and you can run it from your internet browser. http://www.pixlr.com/editor/
