It's pretty simple. It's just converting the layer into a 3d sphere using the built in tools and then slowly rotating it. But the software he used, GIMP might have automating tools for animating it like they are.

I used to be able to do it in Photoshop, but due to my graphics card failure, I can't use 3d tools anymore.

With which program? I can help with Photoshop, but I don't use GIMP, so I'm not fully sure how to work it. I just said the most likely method based on how I used to do this kind of thing with Photoshop.

With GIMP. Photoshop won't download for some stupid reason.

Ah, yeah, GIMP isn't anywhere near my forte. Your best bet is to check online tutorials, which I'm sure there are tons of out there, or ask EmeraldTiger for some help, if he is willing to.

the instructions for making a sphere using gimp

1 start with a square or rectangle image
2 under filters/animation select optimize for GIF a new window will open with the optimized image
3 in the new window under filters/animation select Spinning Globe. A script dialog box will appear
4 here you can adjust the settings till you find what you like. i chose 100 frames, transparent background, index to n colors(0 = remain RGB): 70 i left work on copy checked.
5 it will go through the process after you press OK
6 If you like the result save. if you want to use result on web in the save dialog box make the file extension gif, this will not happen on its own.
7 when you hit the save button another box will pop up. choose Save as Animation, click export. 1 final box will open i would just click Save.

now have a animated sphere that you can share.

i made you avatar into a sphere but it is too large of a file for me to upload. I also made M_Cell_major into a sphere as seen here in this screen shot. it was also to large of a file for me to upload.
