Btw...backgrounds are simply some brushes and filters.

About the symbols...i made the first symbols by selecting the single pieces of each and merging them using layers. Then using half background form one and half from the other.
Now i'm trying creating the forms, so i have more freedom, and using the "make your own" file. :D

Bad luck tht the actual engine doesn't allow 2+ elements card and skill cost... A good programmer would be able to do a whole better game engine even in C++ with the right libreries.
Title: Re: Hybrid Elements by jacker
Post by: Xenocidius on May 27, 2012, 02:13:12 pm
'Even in C++'? You do realize how much more powerful C++ is than Actionscript, right?

The thing is, Kongregate only supports Flash games, so remaking the game in C++, besides the huge amount of time and effort needed, would also lose Elements the huge playerbase on Kong and a lot of revenue.

The game could support 2+ casting/skill cost, but it wasn't implemented for a reason: Elements should not have hybrid cards. This has been stated by Zanz and many members already. The focus of the game is elements, after all, and the elements are what should be focused on, not strange hybrid cards. Not to mention the fact that hybrid cards add another layer of complexity to what should be a simple, casually playable game.

I said "even" because without the right libreries it's a very low level language.

Sorry about the engine's limitations, idk where I heard that.

Hold on a second - is this one of the main reasons this idea was rejected from the game? Correct me if I am wrong, but I was always under the impression that hybrid ideas were mainly rejected due to coding limitations. (The focus on elements response sounds a lot more like the reason for rejecting a 13th element.)

Also, to be fair - hybrid cards are more 'combinations of elements that fit in both elements' rather than 'strange mixes that don't belong in either element', IMHO.

EDIT : Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

Like ZBlader i thought too that the only limitation for hybrid cards was a coding one, and more than that, it could be a good thing the addition of new complexity, since this game has not to be a "simple, casually playable game"

p.s. 500th post ftw

Well, I'm not entirely sure what Zanz's reasoning was for rejecting hybrid ideas, but I imagine the coding involved would be comparable to that involved in creating the Arena. Like the Arena, I don't think he'd shy away from it if it would really benefit the game, which leads me to believe that he just doesn't want them in the game.

That phrasing was a bit bad. I meant that most of the elements are still lacking, and they should be improved on and refined before anything like hybrid cards are introduced. Plus, because there are so many hybrid elements, very few of them would actually have cards in them, so the hybrid elements would remain woefully incomplete for a long time to come.

Yeah, that's the point. since the basic elements are not complete, it is useless talking about an implementation of these in the game, since they have to be studied and balanced a lot. Insert just a card from each hybrid would mean add 66 new cards, a lot at the moment...
anyway, i like doing these, so i'll continue until someone will like them :D

It's not so much the Marks that I'm impressed with, but the card backgrounds.  How do you decide on what you want to design for those?

i just try to see which features the elements have in common, or how they could be "updated" by an other element. Is not easy for all elements combination, so i'm starting with the ones i'm more sure about. As for the Marks, they are merely a different configuration of the pieces of the old ones, i don't wanna create a new one for them, so it's easy not to be impressed by them.

The mark is good though; the marks complement each other very well.

in my mind, the idea was that. in the front there's a burning brush (you can clearly see it), while in the background i tried to create a hot atmosphere...like burning hot beacuse of the fire.
