a few tricks in photoshop, increase the size/resolution before anything else, adjust the curves and contrast/saturation, decrease the size/resolution, use smart sharpen ~50% ~.5pxl, some other things like smudge and a layer mask for hiding undesired areas are also thrown in sometimes.

In fact it looks a lot clearer, I guess especially the contrast correction does the trick here.
Since it will be resized again for a card, increasing the contrast, even if it might lose some details, seems to be a very good approach to me.

So... This has been inactive for quite a while (no s**t).
Anyone knowing weather or not the card art here will actually make it into the game anytime soon?

at this point, i doubt it ever will.  it was shown in a patch thread that zanz had been checking, and opted not to include it at that point.  unlikely that he would reconsider. but who knows.

Since OdinVanguard already brought up the Mandelbrot fractal, why not look at some of the spiral-type magnifications of the mandelbrot set that would also make nice fractal-card images (with appropriate coloring)

Google is not an appropriate image source.

If you want I can create terabytes of such images. Mandelbrot set was my child-hood obsession, I wrote programs to compute these images for every type of computer equipment I ever got my hands on. In fact, I had my own Mandelbrot web page back when I was doing my PhD at the University of Leeds and the www was very young indeed -- circa 1995. Those web pages no longer exists, so it was easier to find some with Google, but trust me I can create thousands or millions of these images. They all come from a very simply quadratic iteration on Complex numbers:

z <- z^2 +c

So, if my computer is an appropriate image source, then I can provide you with Mandelbrot images from here  ;)

EDIT: Actually thanks to Google's Wayback machine, I found an archive of my original page I mentioned above:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970103064657/http://www.chem.leeds.ac.uk/ICAMS/people/zsolt/mandel.html

Two of the images on that page also have the spiral form (click on image to get full size, high resolution versions):

You see, these images were created by my own software, so that should be 'appropriate" source...

given copyright issues, and the corresponding desire for elements not to be impacted by them (in addition to the general bad mojo of using someone else's work without their permission), that would be preferable over google images.

however, i believe that the fractal art in game was generated by zanz (someone please correct me if im wrong), so it would have to be something nice enough for him to toss out his own work- and i think most people would understand its easier to toss out someone elses work than your own.

in any event, take a shot if you're feeling froggy.

I see your point moomoose, it is very unlikely that Zanz would throw away his own art, so not much point pursuing this then.

Nevertheless, just for my own nostalgia, I actually found my original Mandelbrot page and put some images and links from that into my previous post above.

BTW, I never meant for the Google images to be used, I just pointed to them as examples to see how Mandelbrot spirals look like in case people find those an interesting base idea. You can see my original wording: " why not look at some of the spiral-type magnifications..."
