It's because it's an animated gif. Animated gifs, as far as I've found, have a limited color palette, 256 colors, as opposed to static images which could have millions. I very well could be wrong, but the basic understanding is that an animated gif can have less colors than the actual animation you are making once it is saved. If there is a way around that limit(I've seen more than enough gifs that look like they exceed the color limit of gifs I've personally made) I don't know it yet. Photoshop isn't really meant for animated gif making anyway ^^;

This is true, gifs have a limited palette, but the palette isn't fixed, so awesome looking gifs have an adjusted palette which only contains the colours used on it, that's why it doesn't distort.

I would like to critique and suggest a few things in regards to your art. If there is one you thing you lack at all, creativity is not it. The range of your ideas is far and wide, and that's a very awesome thing. However, I see you tend to use the bevel and emboss effect quite often. As well as modifying real or pre-made images and shaping them to your liking. Now there isn't anything wrong with that, I do the same from time to time, however, making an image from scratch can be all the most amazing. I have no doubt that you can do some even more amazing works. And i'm sure it feels very good when you complete an image using nothing but your own tools. I would very much like to see what you can do by creating everything in an image yourself. Using the very bare minimum of effects to help emphasize anything. I feel it would help you along as an artist. I don't mean any of this in a negative way all, just my own personal thought and opinions on things. I really do like your art, so whatever you do, keep it up

I do, what I do, because of my limitation of tools. All I have is the various photo editing software and this computer. I wish I could afford one of the pads that allow art work by hand. Well I did make that hand image with just my mouse, then added color later. I do use the bevel tool a lot, mostly in an attempt to add depth to an image. I know what you mean. I am without a pen tablet tool as well. Which art program do you use? GIMP? Paint.NET? I've never used GIMP but I remember using Paint.NET a lot. Photoshop is probably the best and easiest for me to use, but at the same time, I know Paint.NET and GIMP had several of the same basic tools that allows some great work. If you feel you are limited by the tools you have, go past that. The only real limitation is yourself. Some art will suck, that's just facts of life. You don't even want to see my crappy stuff haha. Some things might not be too good at first, but that's why we practice.
