Elements art class; any interest? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=12445.msg155952#msg155952

Alright, here's the outcome of what Kael Hate, Kuroaitou and myself have been talking about for the last few days. Mind you, this is by no means final, and I'm open for any suggestions.

I'd like to start an Elements 'art class'. What it comes down to, is that everyone involved in it, no matter how (in)experienced, can join up and work on improving his/her art while helping to provide card art for the ideas that are in the Armoury, Forge, or eventually Crucible. The exact details aren't fleshed out yet, of course, but there's a few ways we can do this, possibly with a little help from the Card Curators and/or Scaredgirl.

It could be as much as a simple thread, to a little subforum. The reason this could work either way, is because I want to keep it a constructive, helpful environment. "omfg that looks sooo keeewlll" isn't nearly as helpful as "it's nice, but the proportions on that forearm look off a bit. You could try to shorten it, perhaps?". I want to keep the first kind of comment out of this.[/li] I'd pick a card (or the Curators would) every week or so, and together, we can get to work on creating artwork that could fit the card. The final pick is, of course, in the hands of the card idea creator.[/li] All created artwork would be available to zanzarino, free of charge.[/li] If there's enough dedication, I could throw in little extra stuff, such as anatomy or colour studies.[/li]
These are just a few ideas, but they'd help tremendously in getting some of the talent here a bit more developed (and I know some of you have created some nice-looking stuff before), and mostly, to get rid of all the copyrighted artwork that's being used right now - I must say though, that in order for a card to be considered for this, it'd have to have copyright-free art in the first place. I do not and will not work with art thieves.

That all said; who'd be up for it? Ideas and suggestions are of course welcome!
So long and thanks for all the fish!

I don't have any scanner, so I'm forced to use Pixlr or MS Paint, and I suck at it without outlines. (not that I'm a good artist in the first place, but I'm not bad at fantasy stuff)

Although I don't have a table to physically draw digital art (I'm quite broke, and thus rely on the awkward tools of Pixlr myself ^^;; ), I think that there should be some 'topics' for an Art Class to gather more interest in it. After all, 'classes' usually implies 'teaching', no? :P

For example, in Krava's "My art contribution (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,6660.0.html)" thread, you've greatly helped him hone his technique by addressing several issues:

-Overdoing minor details
-Uniform 'brushwork' (overlapping colors instead of using smudge to mix colors)
-Lighting angles and contrasting (using saturation to figure the range of tones you're using)
-Hard line definition
-Material textures (lighting on metal, skin, etc.)

In other words, if you have a list of 'ideas' that you've learned as an artist, perhaps you (and the community) can share these concepts together to improve the quality of art that's being created for card ideas. :D

Oh, and I would much rather prefer 'subforum' (or just -this- forum) to gather all these different 'class topics' into, rather than a single topic where the post count will skyrocket uncontrollably...

I am definitely interested.

I have to keep my work and some other activities prioritized so I don't know that it could be something I dedicate a ton of time to.

But, I think I could dedicate a few hours a week. Maybe each week you could lead a class that goes over some topic, and then everyone "in the class" goes and makes something up based on what we learned. Basically a detailed forum post that goes over artistic technique X, then in a week we all post what we came up with that exemplifies artistic technique X.

That way we could constantly be working on different aspects of our work. Basically like a weekly "assignment". Drawing art for the Forge or Armory cards eventually sounds great, but I need some work before I am there. Also, as I don't have a ton of time, a smaller project each week is more achievable and more helpful than 1 big project I spend 2 months on.

Btw, I use GIMP (which is freeware) and really pretty good. It's comparable to Photoshop and you can download plugins etc for it. Does have some drawbacks but you can't complain for free.

Thanks for suggesting this vrt, it is something I have been wanting but unable to find.

An example of what wizelsnarf is on about I think working in a forum environment. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=743

I'll have you know that I can complain about anything.

But yeah, reckon those sounds like good ideas. I'm back at uni starting the 20th, but I'm sure I can give an hour or so every now and then for some arty stuff.

Anyone noticed we've got Scientology ads on here now btw? Crazy

That'd be the general idea, wizelsnarf. However, I think I'll find a way to combine it with the actual cards after the first few weeks. Should be good. :)
