Wow!, This is great work Nik, the only thing i have to say is that:

the black border is too strong and solid, meaning its not very transparent or soft enough to go with the natural design of the background in the card. It takes away the softness and the rest of the natural aesthetic imagery in the card.

but besides that, great job!  :P

The black dark border was to give the card more depth. It is made strong and solid to make the card seem more extreme. I believe that beauty of art is in combining something that is totally extreme (things that are too different from each other and lies in opposite ends) into something better together. This way the two extremes would easily reflect each others beauty and property very strongly.

This can be easily seen in what i tried to achieve with this design. The dark black border highlights the softness inside the card. The black border being solid and strong has the most important stats like card cost and attack|hp inscribed into it.

I tried different things after reading your post Flayne but i could'nt find anything myself to improve this any further. Thx for your observations.

TL;DR  :  The strength of the black border makes the inside of the card look better. The strong black border holds the most useful info which is highlighted more to the player.

Lowering the black border's transparency to maybe 70%, to let the background image through, I think will add to the desig while keeping the strength in contrast.

I really like it, but you have the wrong picture for rustler. You are using leaf dragon for the both cards....

I'm deeply in love with the card code being on the card; it helps a lot not needing to open up trainer whenever I want to modify a deck! However,  I don't understand why the element avatar is at the bottom of each card? It seems out of place, the border continuity is broken and a tad unappealing. Also, clean up your corners: either stick with a sharp corner or rounded one. Great work overall! It's just the details make or break any design! (:
