The win/loss issue most likely happened because the game hadn't save successfully, either because he closed the window too early or because of connection issues.
You'll see a green "confirmed" sign up at the left (briefly), after a successful save. If there are connection issues, you'll get a red "disconnected" button instead, that you can press to retry.
The critters turning into pillars issue is a bug, and likely has something to do with you being too fast for the game to keep up. Wait a second or two between playing different cards and I don't think it should be an issue.
