Forum Brawl #7 - Round 2 - Voting
Comment:
Poll
Should the vote deadline change?
No, keep it as it is now.
Yes, make it the same as the Round deadlines.
It doesn't matter to me, both works.

It knows you are on a brawl team, yes, but the tool itself does not stop you from voting on yourself. However, we can see if you do and we won't count such a vote at all, since it is not allowed.

More votes. Again, doing explanations only for the tasks we actually know stuff about (which is not a lot this round).
Spoiler
for
Votes
:
Artist: Drawing maps is a pain, we're terribly sorry for the artists in the other teams. That said, BGFY's take on the task seems the best.
Boss: When we firstly saw the Green Night's take on this, we couldn't help but chuckle. One of the Jijo's teammates said that we got him a bit frustrated, and I get that, but is these are the kinds of gems that Jijo's gonna come up with when he's pissed at us, we might consider pissing him more often.
Oh, and the winner is obviously GN, our collective vanity wouldn't let us vote for anyone else.
Bonus: BFGY all the way. We're actually pretty disappointed that neither we or anyone else didn't think of having something like seven stars on the background or something.

Spoiler
for
Captain
:
You are not alone here. You don't know what kind of alien creatures would find their way to these ruins, or how they even get here. Make a card to depict one of these aliens.
BGFY nailed it. Spectre of Decay has an interesting and balanced mechanic, one that meshes readily with the idea of something that would be found on a planet of ruins.
Iron manta also has a cool card. The mechanic is very interesting, but I think it might be a tad too strong. Darkness traditionally has high cost creatures with low-ish attack and a utility mechanic to make up for it. This degree of cheap attack power with 2:2 / 4:2 in the element with Eclipse, and then including the mechanic, makes for a rush value uncharacteristic of
.
Another minor issue is that your card says "Ruin Roaches" but your table says "Ruin Roach."
Paratus' Locusts could be a decent idea, but haven't reached the point of refinement where it would actually be one. In card design, balance is king. Everything else is secondary unless your theme is extremely compelling while introducing a new mechanic. For future card design submissions, I recommend taking a look at what other cards exist in the game, especially ones similar mechanically to the card you propose or ones in the same element as your idea. If your card completely replaces or would never be used compared to another card, then you're going in the wrong direction.
I didn't get Green Night's card until I reexamined the task parameters. Then it clicked! Thematically it's very strong, but I'm not convinced of its merit from a gameplay perspective. The balance is fine, but the mechanic explicitly dealing with upgrades isn't something I'm sure about.
Spoiler
for
Space Trooper
:
Strange creatures are sneaking around in the ruins. Build a deck to represent traps you have put around your camp to avoid ambushes.
In terms of actual deckbuilding, I think all teams have done fairly well at making something that avoids ambushes. Therefore my voints will favor those whose decks match a believable theme. Less "Can your deck accurately represent traps that would deter random creature attacks" but more "Is it believable that your team has/is using this particular set of traps?"
Iron manta paints a clear picture, and their aquatic crew drowning things makes for a convincing idea. Less believable is how they're setting that up on what sounds like a land-based ruin, but presumably an aquatic space-faring civilization should've figured that out somewhere along the way.
Green Night's idea is also good, and I like their explanation the best. However, I'm not sure where you're getting all of those scorpions from. Either you found them in the middle of a planet-ruin, which seems unlikely, or you're carrying them around in your ship specifically for some purpose, which also doesn't make very much sense.
I can see where BGFY is trying to do, but the justification for their crew having random graveyards lying around with only vague statements about having a lot of tips and tricks doesn't cut it.
Paratus' explanation doesn't explain much.
Spoiler
for
Mapper/Log Keeper
:
Mapper: Your sensors tell you that in the middle of this mazelike city you find another artifact that seems to be the source of the signal. Unfortunately, because of all the buildings you can't land near it. Good thing you made a map of the place when you saw it from above while landing! Draw a map of the ruined city with some (what you think was) important structures highlighted. This task is an Artifact Task! The team that wins this task will get the Artifact! Artifacts can give you special abilities or change future tasks!
Iron Manta centering their map on their ship makes sense, and their submission feels the most unique given the medium used and the details they provide for their places of interest listed on the map. Unfortunately, they don't seem to include the center of the city/source of the signal, and that feels like it would've been an important thing to include. If it's outside their radius, fine, but the task heavily implies that it should be included.
Paratus have the second visually-impressive submission, but without any text it doesn't have the effect of feeling like a usable/good map. The integration into a story partially helps to mitigate this.
BGFY and Green Night look like they were made in paint. That's not a problem if done well, but it's not looking great here. BGFY at least explains some of the items on their map while Green Night does include location names on their map, so those are some positive indicators for these submissions.
The decision here will be tough, since all tasks have some of the qualities I was looking for in a submission, and all are lacking a few.
Log Keeper: In one of the strange ruined buildings highlighted on the mapper's map you find a text that explains the building's purpose in the old Ancestor society. Write the text in both its original form and its translation in Galactic Common Language (English).
(Note that only the Mapper part of this task is the Artifact Task)
For Log Keeper, I want to believe that this text existed in the city before it was ruined. If a civilization is falling into a cataclysm, they're probably not going to be leaving messages for archaeologists-- they're going to be evacuating, fighting back, etc. It makes no sense to directly point out "Building X is for Function Y." Try to show, not tell.
BGFY and Iron Manta accomplish this beautifully. The text of the translation indicates something that could have naturally existed in the building without stating it outright. The format including translation speculation/error is a nice touch.
Paratus' submission technically works, but leaving a warning behind doesn't make sense to me for the reasons stated above.
Green Night's text sounds like a conversation instead of something that would be found written down.
Spoiler
for
Mechanic
:
These must the the Ruins of the Ancestors. You find some of their technologically advanced stuff, but none of them are working now, centuries later. Make a card to show an example of an object that the Ancestors used.
Having a card that doesn't actually work anymore is a good touch from Green Night. Kudos.
Paratus and BGFY have very interesting and balanced card ideas.
Iron Manta's card idea is the least balanced, but the effect meshes very well with the theme.
All the submissions were very good here.
Spoiler
for
Bonus
:
Every member in the winning Team of Brawl will receive a magnificent Forum Icon that sits underneath their profile picture on every post they make! Your task is to make this icon. Submissions must be 32x32 pixels and in PNG format. Note: The icon that wins this task will be the one used as Brawl award! So do your best!
BGFY have a great icon idea that could use a bit of polish. The rocket distracts a little from the 7 and it feels like the focus is off somehow.
Paratus have a good icon idea executed well. The 7 is clear and distinct.
Green Night has an interesting icon idea, but the planets are a little too big and distract from the 7.
I'm not sure what Iron Manta are going for.
Spoiler
for
Mechanic Challenge
:
Shots have been fired from a team to the other and back. Make a card that represents a weapon that you have on your ship to attack and/or defend yourself.
It's interesting how both submissions have the same name error in the table for the upgraded card. I think these are both good submissions, but Borg bullets> phasers set to stun

Hey everyone, I'm still alive
Spoiler
for
votes
:
Captain
[ 3 ] Iron Manta: Similar cards have been done before. A simple hitter with a perk, but I like the balance.
[ 5 ] BGFY: Reminds me of an inverted version of the blood pseudo element (that I'm sure only some dinosaurs of the community remember). I really like the whole idea overall.
[ 0 ] Paratus: It sounds like it would be really hard to make a deck with a stable quanta base using this card (unless you build the whole deck around it, which I don't see why you would)
[ 2 ] Green Night: LMAO
===
Mapper
Based mostly on quality and how the aesthetic works for its purpose:
Iron Manta [ 5 ]
BGFY [ 2 ]
Paratus [ 3 ]
Green Night [ 0 ]
===
Logger
I may detail these later
Iron Manta [ 4 ]
BGFY [ 2 ]
Paratus [ 3 ]
Green Night [ 1 ]
===
Bonus
[ 1 ] Iron Manta: Dafuq am I looking at?
[ 5 ] BGFY: I like the combination of the 7 and the rocket
[ 2 ] Paratus: Looks a bit generic
[ 2 ] Green Night: Also looks a bit generic
===
Challenge - vote goes to Green Night
Paratus: Since you don't explain in the submission what stun means I'll assume you were thinking of delay. That's one of those cards that depending on the situation is either plain broken (if you are facing a mono or a duo, since it'll likely affect more than one creature) or underwhelming (if you are facing a rainbow, where it'll likely just be a weaker, pricier BB), with almost no middle ground. Not the best balance choice imo.
Green Night: It's an interesting form of soft PC for life. Even though the card may be weak, if the opponent has no shield, it is also cheap, so it balances out.

UTA still haven't updated the tool, RIP.
You will have to PM your Challenge vote to me and ARTHA. We will also probably extend the Challenge voting deadline until the Round ends.

+1
I'm already very low on time. Please as few deadlines as possible. I understand why it the deadline is different and it's probably the best idea brawl has had so far, but I cannot deal with it right now.
