We've managed to recruit enough for 5 teams, though one is a volunteered non-artist and one put "Any". This is something we'll have to evaluate again next brawl to determine if the role will stay.

Data like what I collected on Brawl 4 role preferences should be collected on previous Brawls, that way we have a bigger picture for more robust conclusions. However I do not have the time for such a task.

My unfounded suspicion is that the low Artist turnout for Brawl 4 is an outlier but the Forum Expert + Off Topic turnout is relatively constant.

I can do more intense research with my new partner after brawl 4, but if memory serves there has never been a large turnout for Artist, usually just enough to make quota, including secondary desired roles.

I'll be honest here, I'm disliking the artist tasks that have people use a certain style of art - Cubism, Abstract, etc.
It's fair to say that different card designers have different styles, and that different writers have different styles, and so do artists. But artists feel uniquely restricted in this regard.

In fact, no, this extends to all the tasks - I'm disliking all tasks where I'm told the method I'm supposed to conjure the task. Example - round 1 and 3 artist tasks.

But I feel that all the tasks for card designers and writers (for the most part, I'll admit I'm struggling a bit with round3's task) accommodate for this by allowing people to tackle them in multiple different directions.

You want to make a 0 HP creature? You can make a 0 HP creature that dies under a condition. You can make a 0 HP creature that dies weirdly. You can make a 0 HP creature that dies over and over and over.

You want to make a writing on Zanz's being awayness? You can make an almost erotic fanfiction creepy horror story, a greek tragedy, a cheerful and upbeat story, etc.

...
Make cubism.
... Gee, will it involve cubes?

...
Make abstract art.
... Gee, will it involve using brush strokes to create a pretty pattern that might as well just be a fractal?

... These artist tasks really do seem to be focussing more on the method by which the art is created, not the art itself. And I dislike that - I find that really limiting. I'm not even an artist, and I feel it's limiting me.

Lol, you are overreacting for sure; the artists didn't complain and cubism is not just about cubes, but it deals with geometry and volume in general. Cones, spheres, pyramids and every kind of 3D shape can be included in cubism. :P

Last Brawl I complained about the barroque task being an insane request (round 4 iirc) and was extremelly unsatisfied with the "baroque" submissions the other teams made.

It feels like you guys run out of ideas and are going through a list of styles, instead of changing the subject of the drawings, etc.

Frequently challenging card idea tasks involve either the rider or more commonly the vehicle being mostly predetermined. Round 2 (the 0hp creature) cemented most of the details about the vehicle(although not everything). Perhaps it is only the recursive vehicle(vehicle(...(rider)) nature of method that makes this feel less restrictive?

Personally I enjoyed the card design tasks where I felt some of my choices were predetermined by the task. Now that is partially a matter of tastes since my style is one of resonance (any aspect makes demands of me about the other aspects). However it increases the challenge by limiting my options and it brings the results closer together for comparison (although usually not as close as Round 2).

Now while methods/vehicles are a useful limitation for Card Design tasks, I wonder if message/riders are a more useful one for Artist tasks? Although I suspect a limitation in the middle (vehicle-rider is recursive) would be the most useful for Artist tasks.

Round 1 subject: Team's name.
Round 2 subject: EtG-related.
Round 3 subject: Depending on CD's idea.
