The rules stated Redraw/Modify the card art for the new element. Modifying the actual card is basically using a crutch.

True, but since the label continues like this "The community will be encouraged to vote for the best representation and originality" it is quite easy for participants to think that "originality" has to do with both art and card mechanics. After all, you can't keep a card completely the same after changing its element. For example, the angel has interesting art, but an entropic angelic creature with an in-element healing effect just doesn't fit (no offence to the artist, he/she made an impressive art)...
However, I  have already mentioned that I will pay respect to the voting criteria and I hope the rest of the voters will do the same.

Yes the wording was not optimally clear. Some cards can be changed to a different element without changing the mechanics at all (name changes for abilities and creatures do not count as changing). [2 of the 3] So changing the mechanics allows one to select from a broader range of cards. Thus changing the mechanics acts like a crutch. The remaining 3 artists did not intend to use a crutch. So I agree we should not be influenced (positively or negatively) by the effect of the crutch when voting.

Yeah, for artist next time I think that it should be clarified if you just had to rework the artwork or the entire card, as 2 submissions did.

3 submissions did that, not only 2. Artist #2 (Firefly Queen -> Vampire King), Artist #4 (Lava Golem -> Ice Golem) and Artist #6 (Immolation -> Sacrifice). The other three, Artist #1 (Fate Egg -> Fate Egg), Artist #3 (Guardian Angel -> Disfigured Angel) and Artist #5 (Crusader -> Dark Crusader) have only changed card's name & element.

I fail to see how ice golem changed card mechanics, since its the same with a different element/name. If you want to point that out, then only Fate Egg didn't change anything.
But oh, well. Its nice that it has been clarified and i hope the community gets objective and vote based on art.

^ You fail to see any differences between Lava Golem and Ice Golem? Fine, let me point it to you:
1st) Ice Golem cost 7 in both upped and unupped versions. Lava Golem cost 5 unupped and 7 upped.
2nd) Ice Golem's stats in both upped/unupped versions are 1|5, while Lava Golem has 5|1 unupped and 7|1 upped.
3rd) Ice Golem has actually exactly the same cost & stats unupped and upped, making you to have no reason to upgrade it!

 Fate Egg is NOT the only card that hasn't changed anything other than making a card to an card. Guardian Angel | Archangel has just changed its element & ability from to and Crusader has just his name and the name of his ability changed, as well as their costs ( instead of ). On the other hand, Ice Golem (Lava Golem) has minor changes, Vampire King (FFQ) has average changes and Sacrifice (Immolation) has major changes.

I'm pretty sure those minor changes you noticed are just author mistakes.

I heartily enjoyed all the submissions, but one in particular somewhat annoyed me. Writer #1, you need to step it up.

Rule / project goal interpretations aside, the art submissions for this round were all seriously awesome. My 3 favorites are the crusader, the egg, and the vampire king. All of them were very cool though.

Off topic ish: Isn't Ice golem horribly UP? 7 for a 1|5 creature? And 2 to gain +2/+2? That makes it worse than forest spirit, graviton fire eater, lava golem, steam machine, and basically any grower! Also, no change when it gets upgraded.

It was made in purpose like that, in order to make Antlions, Blue Crawlers, Graviton Mercenaries and Abominations look overpowered in comparison!
