Should I Start Reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen?

I generally like most fantasy series as long as their not too generic/formulaic. (My favorite is probably "A Song of Ice and Fire" as you can probably guess by my name.) I had a friend recommend this series to me, but when I looked up some reviews on it, they all seemed very mixed. As in, "This is awesome," or "This is terrible." There wasn't a lot of middle ground. Has anyone read this? And can you tell me specifically why you thought it was awesome or terrible?

I've heard both good and bad things about this series also so I've got the first book on order from the library.I'll post here how it goes for me once I get it.

I like the OP would be interested in other ppl's opinions of the series.

Well I got it and gave it a go but quit after about 200 pages or so as it still hadn't really grabbed me by that point,that's not to say it's badly written or anything....just not for me is all.I'd suggest doing as I did and getting the first book from a library or borrowing it from a friend and seeing if it's your thing.

I am an avid fantasy reader and have nothing but good things to say about this series.  It is epic on the scale of homer and has more magic than any other series I can think of.  It is so epic after 2 re-reads there are still parts that I am not sure are finished.  read it.
