Alan, when you get a moment, I'd like to prevent the whole "buy a heal in one tab while battling a monster in another" technique, as it makes high hp fairly useless.

That just depends on what's easiest for Alan to program. Mostly likely it will apply to all shop items though.

Looks like it is still currently possible to buy items like heal from the shop while fighting a monster. If attempted when you first meet a monster it throws a no-refresh error, but on subsequent attacks I was able to heal in another tab then continue fighting.

No healing at rollover and heal price increase made the game much harder. What if heal at rollover was 20% of your hp or something?
