I agree with making it only affect spells the opponent casts. Quantum was right - my balance statistics were horribly skewed.

Any other thoughts?

They're two different ideas. Yours doesn't even mention an ability like this on the card (only in the table) and takes all negative effects while mine takes all effects that target you directly. Nonetheless it's a good idea and I hope you improve on it :)

I like this card (Storm Rod, that is), but I think I would like it better in :earth as it goes with their defensive theme and it isn't a stretch for the card name to fit in.
