Check the wikia for the stats weapons have when made creatures. And remember: A flying titan= a 8/70 creature.

A strong card, staple of just about any deck.
Turns your own weapon into a creature, which opens up another slot to play a weapon! Or even boost your new 'creatures' damage.

I know! it makes you want to cry tears of joy... Eispeccialy when you can make copies of that creature (using  :aether) and than target it with chaos seed and it makes another copy! That happened with jade staff to me once...

When you protect a weapon then fly it, its not immortal. Seems like it should be. Is this a bug or a feature?

A feature. Protect Artifact is just that - Protect ARTIFACT. Flying Weapon "turn(s) your weapon into a creature"; it has lost its status as an artifact. Thus, it loses its protected status because it no longer pertains to the animated weapon.

Additionally, it would be waaay too cheap :P

this card is generaly only useful if you make a deck around weapons. can be used in other decks, but not as efficiently.
my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard and they're like "its better than yours" damn right, its better than yours! i can teach you but i'd have to charge!

This card, in my opinion, is the most creatively put to use card in the entire game.  :air for life.

It would be extremely useful if FW/AW would be playable even if there is no weapon in my weapon slot. I've ended up quite a few times recently where I wanted to draw an extra card but wasn't able to because my hand was full. I wanted to, but could not get rid of AW, since it can only be played if you have a weapon. Thus I was forced not to draw an extra card (as I couldn't play any other than AW due to low quanta), and than discard AW at the end of the turn.

I would rather choose to
  • pay the casting cost of AW (and play it without use) AND draw an extra card, than
  • discard AW AND not being able to draw an extra card
This is somewhat similar to the problem of not being able to cast a Firestorm on your own creatures.

Is there any chance that these might change in the near future?

On a related note, if you should happen to click this card accidentally (i.e. when you have no weapon in hand), you still lose the quantum cost.
