Chapter 48
A New Friend... Not
I had seen quite a few strange things during my time as an Archangel, but none of them could compare with what I witnessed just now. First, my skeleton companion Yüruk exploded into a pile of bone shards for no apparent reason. Then I heard his voice coming from the mouth of a female Death Elemental named Evelyn who, in a rather flirtatious manner, proclaimed that I would be more "fun" if dead. After trading a few snarky verbal lines, I attacked this witch named Evelyn, but my attacks seemed to heal her. This peculiar sequence of events certainly did not happen to me every day.

I didn't know what strange magic my opponent used, but I had seen something like it before. I once fought an Entropy Elemental, a sneaky little worm named Mythias, who used a form of magic that made my attacking spells turn into healing. Of course, no magic was infallible, and the Entropic vermin screamed in agony when I threw a healing spell at him. If I remember correctly, that particular Entropy spell was called Antimatter, and it inverted all healing and damage inflicted to the targeted individual. So did this mean that this Death Elemental, Evelyn, somehow possessed the power of Entropy?

I wasn't entirely sure about this, but according to the libraries in the Light Realm, Elementals rarely possessed the ability to wield two elements at once. Some of the few exceptions were the Graviton Fire Eaters who could manipulate both Fire and Gravity, and the Fallen Elves who could control both Life and Entropy. I wasn't aware that any Death-Entropy dual races existed... But then again, I could wield both Light and Darkness at the moment, thanks to my pompous alter-ego Nadir. Did this mean that Evelyn had some sort of Entropic presence in her head?

If you really want to know, why not just go inside her mind?

No! Invading someone's mind is the worst possible way to violate his privacy. I would have never done it if I were you.

You are me, fool. And why would you care about the privacy of an enemy? You should use whatever method at your disposal to utterly destroy her!

You claim to be a mental projection of myself, but are you really? You should know how much I hate senseless killing!

You dare to doubt my authenticity?! I do not know what exactly I am, but I know I am you just as you are me. Enough of this prattle. You want to know why the witch can imitate the voice of your pathetic excuse of a friend? Then look in her mind! She could have devoured his soul for all I know!

I winced at Nadir's tone. For a second he seemed to have lost his temper, and it was frightening. Nevertheless, he did have a point; what if Yüruk's soul was devoured by Evelyn? Now, how do I enter someone's mind again?

Pathetic. Nadir gave me the mental equivalent of a shove, and I felt myself being launched out of my own body as a stream of white energy. As a stream of energy, I slammed into Evelyn's forehead. I felt a sucking sensation around my entire body as I sank into the Death Elemental's mind.

When I entered the mind of Deimex last time, I saw an absolute void where nothing existed. What I saw in Evelyn's mind was quite different. I found myself in a long gray hallway, dimly lit with spectral purple flames and filled with thousands upon thousands of alcoves. Most of the alcoves were empty, but a few of them were filled with stacks of ancient scrolls. I thought about looking through some of them, but decided against it since I could feel no Entropic presence among those parchments. Why did she have those scrolls anyways? With her being a necrophile, I expected to see something disturbing in Evelyn's mind.

I flew forward in Evelyn's mindscape for several minutes, but the hallway never seemed to end. I did not find her consciousness either. By the look of things, I was probably looking in the wrong place; this hallway was likely where her memories were stored. I remembered that the place was not real, only a projection of the mind. If I had the willpower, I should be able to manipulate my surroundings directly.

I concentrated, trying to grasp this "mental energy" around me as though I was grasping Light elemental energy. Surprisingly, it worked. The hallway dissipated instantly, replaced by...

...something disturbing. Yeah, I would rather not describe it. It might induce vomiting, dizziness, and other unpleasant symptoms.

In the middle of this, ah, location, was an extravagant throne made of bleached white bones and indigo crystals. Evelyn sat atop it, dressed in a royal purple robe made of the finest silk, fit for a queen. She looked different, too. She used to be very thin, almost anorexic, but now her figure was full and luscious. Her skin no longer had its sickly pallor; it was still deathly pale, but now it resembled exquisitely carved marble. Her frizzy and dusty hair was now oiled and silky smooth, its ebony curls held up by skull-shaped hairpins made entirely out of amethyst. She really looked quite gorgeous, but I probably would have appreciated it more if not for those, uh, objects, around me. If she looked like a queen in her own mind but a beggar in the real world, then she must be both very egotistical and very lazy.

"Aww, hun, you came here to visit me?" Evelyn grinned. "That's so sweet! What do you say you become one of them," she made a gesture toward those things that I'd rather not see again, "so we can have some fun?" She winked.

I sighed. To be honest, I lost the capability to feel attracted toward other females as soon as I first laid my eyes on Selene. Sure, I could acknowledge the fact that Evelyn looked beautiful, but I felt about as much sexual attraction toward her as I felt toward a rock. "No thanks. I apologize for being blunt, but honestly I find your scenery revolting. I would rather not become a part of it."

"Aw, that's too bad," she pouted. Then she smirked again. "You're looking for your friend, aren't you? Well, here ya go!" She snapped her fingers, and a pinkish-violet sphere of light popped into existence, floating over her right shoulder.

I frowned "What...?"

"Hey dude, what's up?" The ball of light suddenly spoke. It sounded exactly like Yüruk.

"What the...?!" I almost jumped in surprise. "What kind of trick is this?!"

"Come on, it's me, Yüruk!" The violet light ball shook and spun itself in an overexaggerated motion. "I don't know how I turned into this thing, but it's really me!"

I didn't know how or why, but I could somehow feel that the purple sphere really was Yüruk. His presence felt familiar, identical to what I had felt when I briefly made contact with his mind to purge him of Deimex's influence. I felt immensely relieved, like having an invisible weight lifted off of my shoulders. But the problem was that this glowing ball of magenta was Entropy, presumably the energy that fuelled Evelyn's Antimatter spell. But how could Yüruk manifest as a sphere of Entropic energy when he was an undead elf, a creature made of Life and Death?

"Yüruk!" I said. "What happened to you?"

"Like I said, I have absolutely no clue," the ball of light somehow appeared exasperated despite it having even less facial features than a skeleton. "I was getting bored waiting for you. Then I suddenly blacked out, and here I am. Oh, and apparently she blew me up somehow," it floated in front of Evelyn's face.

I cursed myself. Damn it! Couldn't I protect anyone?! Selene died because of me, and Yüruk was mentally assaulted, taken over, and blown to pieces! I gritted my teeth. "What did you do to him?" I glared at the purple-clad Death witch.

"Beats me," Evelyn shrugged. "I just played around with him a bit, and he blew up. He's still here though, so it's all right!"

"Did you devour his soul?!" I allowed my aura to explode into a brilliant white flare, not caring if it hurt the Death Elemental in front of me.

"Ew, no!" She had a disgusted look on her face. "That's gross, and only some criminal named Deimex did that! As I said, I only tweaked little Yüruk a bit, and suddenly he's in my head!"

I let my aura subside a little. "You should be glad that his soul is intact. I plan on resurrecting him, and I will not forgive you if you prevent me from doing so."

"Ooh, resurrection?" Evelyn suddenly perked up. "That sounds exciting! I've never done one before! Can I help, pretty please?"

Wow, I could not believe my luck. I wanted to find Death magic to resurrect Selene, but I never dreamed that I would find a Death Elemental willing to help me. Excellent. "Hmph, you'd better. You blew my friend up, so you have to make it up by reviving him."

And with that, my surroundings dissolved into nothingness as I exited Evelyn's mind. I didn't know how exactly I did it. I simply thought "I want to get out of here", and instantly I felt a pulling sensation around my body. Or mind. Or whatever my current form was. I saw the gray sands of Death and the purple sky zoom past me, and suddenly I was back in my own physical body.

Took you long enough.

I shook my head. The reinsertion of my mind back into my body was rather... rough, and I was feeling a little dizzy. Evelyn was waking up as well, shaking her head and trying to stand up. Strange, my body didn't seem to collapse when my mind left it; must be because Nadir was still occupying my body when I left. This had some disturbing implications...

"Nice trick you've got there," Evelyn said as she rubbed her head. After seeing her extravagant clothing in her own mind, I could hardly believe that this almost unnaturally thin woman dressed in gray baggy rags was the same person. "I've had souls pass through me before, but it never felt like that!"

"Souls passing through you?" I asked her with skepticism. "What is that? Is that what happened to Yüruk?"

"What? You've never learned about it before? You silly Light Elemental!"

I sighed. "Please don't speak to me like a friend, until you resurrect my actual friend whom you blew up. Now, please kindly explain how things work here in the Death Realm."

"All right, all right..." She said with a frown. "I thought you people at Light would teach you more about us..."

"In case you have forgotten, my Realm generally tends to regard your element of Death as evil. A rather contrived opinion sadly, but all they teach us is that you send souls to oblivion and steal their knowledge."

"You gonna let me speak or not?" Evelyn crossed her arms.

"I apologize. Carry on."

"Hmph, pompous Light jerks. Oblivion knows why we never get souls of their element passing through." I almost objected again, but stopped myself. "Anyways, souls come here when they die. Why? I dunno. I guess they just like the vibe here. When a soul gets here, it passes 'through' one of us, and stores its memories in the guy's mind. It's supposed to convince the soul that it won't be forgotten when it accepts oblivion, but the memories are actually our food. I personally don't give a bone about this, but apparently our great great granddaddies wanted to preserve the memories of dead people as much as possible, so we automatically digest the less important memories and only move on to the significant ones when we have to."

"Well... If those mental projections of scrolls represent the memories you have kept, then obviously you have not kept very many," I mused. "But wait. Are you saying that when you made Yüruk explode, his soul passed through you and is somehow stuck?"

"I guess," she shrugged.

"And how do you explain the fact that Yüruk, being undead, somehow mysteriously changed his element from Death to Entropy?"

"I dunno, so quit asking me already!" Evelyn had an annoyed expression on her face. "Yüruk already has some Entropy when I found him. He's pretty messed up, having some Death, Entropy, and Life..."

"You did not find him," I raised my voice harshly, my aura once again exploding outwards. "Yüruk is not a toy to be found and lost."

"Dude, calm down," Evelyn said with Yüruk's voice. That looked and sounded very strange. "It's okay. I don't mind. Besides, it was getting boring, sitting there with nothing but dead trees around."

I knew it was really Yüruk this time, so I suppose I could forgive Evelyn's disrespect for the skeleton. But why was Yüruk still talking about dead trees? That joke was getting old. "For the last time, Yüruk, there are no dead trees around here! All I see is gray sand."

"What?! Seriously, are you blind or-" Then Evelyn's own voice suddenly cut off Yüruk's rather whimsical one. "You boys really don't know how things work around here, do you?"

"The Light Realm abhors you, and I have not died before. So no, I do not think I know of the details of this place." I sighed. Hearing Yüruk's and Evelyn's voices occupying one body was going to give me a headache.

"Fine, I'll explain it to you..." Evelyn sighed. "Don't ask me why, but this place looks like whatever you think it looks like. If you want a happy place after you die, you get a happy place. If you think you'll get tortured for your crimes, then you get tortured for your crimes."

"Hm, I suppose that makes sense," I mused. I did imagine the Realm of Death to be a barren, gray desert, with a cold indigo sun. Yüruk, being formerly an Elf of the forest, would likely associate Death with decaying trees, so it was reasonable that he would see dead trees instead of sand. Given that little tidbit, I probably would not want to imagine what Evelyn's version of the Death Realm resembles...

"Ugh, I was lucky to find a portal out when I woke up," said Yüruk with Evelyn's mouth. "I don't want to be stuck here forever. What do souls do here anyways?"

"Oh, I dunno. Some just lets go and accepts oblivion, and the others... I guess they just stay here till they mostly forget who they were. They usually accept oblivion as well after that," Evelyn said with her own voice. Then she frowned in distaste. "But, you know, some nastier emotions tend to stick around longer. When a soul has forgotten everything but those... Not pretty," she grimaced.

"Those would be the malicious spirits I have fought, I presume?" I asked. If that was the case, then I felt relieved, since I was actually doing them a favor by blasting them to oblivion.

"Yep. That's why we have Wardens here, to clean up those decayed souls. Man, I'd hate to be one of them," she shuddered, "having to clean up those nasty wraiths all the time. And then there was that Deimex guy we banished a while ago. Reports said he ate those wraiths. Blegh."

Hm. So this Deimex was an exile in the Realm of Death, just like me. Who were the "Faded Ones" then? Were they an organization that tries to recruit powerful rogue Elementals like Deimex and me? "Funny you should mention him, this Deimex. Friendly fellow, is he not? I happened to have fought him on my way here. Wanted to capture me, and I don't know why."

"Wait. He was the guy who wanted to capture you?" Evelyn's face contorted with revulsion. "Gah! I can't believe I compared myself to him! Don't worry hun, capturing them is so not how we treat people we like."

"Yes, yes, of course. You kill those you like, and turn them into... never mind," I sighed. I hoped this ditz can truly resurrect people as she stated. "Now then. What do you know about resurrection?"

"Oh, that? Easy!" She grinned. "You get a soul, you get a body, and you glue the soul to the body with Death energy. Simple as that!"

I raised one silver eyebrow. "That's it? All right. If it's that simple, then why don't you help me resurrect another person along with Yüruk?"

"Another one? Sure, no problem! It's fun, and I have nothing to do in this dump anyways. What's your name again? I don't think you ever told me. You Light Elementals all have those fancy names..." She mumbled.

I winced as I remembered my last encounter with those of my kind. It involved my beloved Selene being burned to nothingness in front of my eyes. I shook my head, not wanting to start crying again. "I'm... not exactly one of them anymore. I no longer use one of their fancy names, but you can call me Zenith."

"So, you think you can find the soul of this person you want to resurrect?"

"Well, you see..." I began to explain my situation to Evelyn.

After that, we started our journey again, toward the Realm of Time. What a strange turn of events. A stranger blew up my friend, but said stranger ended up becoming my friend. Well, not really. I would not consider Evelyn a friend, not until she resurrected my real friend Yüruk.
To be or not to be, I can do both at once. Go learn quantum mechanics, n00b.

Chapter 49
A Maniac inside my head
It was decided that we were to head towards the north, not sure why, perhaps the primal instincts of someone else’s judgement. After that weird encounter with Jorporel, and his reaction to Nepycros, I decided to be on the lookout for him, it would have seemed he was hiding something from us, but now I’m not so sure.

We were at least twenty kilometres from the crater, we had walked a great distance, along the desert plains.
It was very tiring, especially since we never knew what we were doing. What was our purpose? Why did this group form? Why were we following this path? It all seemed strange, as though we were born yesterday and never knew what to do with our new lives, at least it was mostly the case with me.  Having being alive for only a week.
I wanted to learn more of our group. I barely knew these people, and yet here I am, in their pack.
Nepycros was strange, he was basically a shadow that walked alongside us. He had a peculiar personality, being the obnoxious but intelligent one.
EmeraldTiger, he seemed timid for a person of his size, as though he possessed a gentle nature, even when he tried to attack me alongside Zblader.
Zblader was mysterious, he had excellent swordsmanship, was mostly calm in some situations,  and knows what to say to people most of the time. Yet he was very sensitive, emotionally, and especially to subjects about his lost sister. I had woken up one night due to some people arguing. It was Nepycros and Zblader.
Apparently, Nepycros had made some very harsh comments about Zblader’s sister, which caused Zblader to react aggressively, I don’t blame him.
Jorporel was new to me as well as to everyone, yet he already demonstrated his hatred to Darkness Elementals. But due to what happened, I knew there was another side to it, another story.

And myself, I had no clue. It seemed I knew more about these people than I did of myself. Years of life have given them their outlooks and first impressions, but me? I was just born, with no identity. I felt strange about myself, especially about my appearance. It was intimidating to others, or at first anyway.
The very fact I existed was unknown, from what I gathered, these people had parents. I wasn’t sure about Jorporel, he basically fell out of the sky. Though from the fact that he attacked Nepycros, and his expression of his hatred for Darkness Elementals, I gathered that he was taught those ideas by someone else, perhaps parental guidance. So that only left me. The amnesiac that rose from the earth.

After such long thoughts, I decided that I didn’t care anymore and lived on with the facts.
I realized that we had stopped in a small bushy area. The plants seemed dry but would suffice for a good camping ground. The sun was falling and the night was near.

We did the usual, make camp, make a fire, cook a meal, shared stories with each other. Even Jorporel had mentioned that he was a Light elemental that fell from the heavens, strange if you ask me, but strangely it made sense. We all shared information at the end of the night. Condor flew to a branch with a piece of meat and ate it, the branch had folded a bit due to his weight. Damn that bird was getting bigger and bigger by the days. He was almost a meter tall!

The night was getting rather cold, causing everyone including myself to say their goodnights and go to bed.
I lay down on a leaf bed tailored by EmeraldTiger, surprisingly it was really comfortable, I was grateful to him for such kindness.

I was wide awake, thinking some new thoughts, when suddenly I felt a strange pressure in my head. It was small so I ignored it. But then it started to get a little stronger.

I was worried, Suddenly what seemed to be my view of the trees had now turned into a view of just pitch black.
Then objects and light started to appear.
I was standing on top of what seemed to be a huge and thick pillar or column.
A few hundred feet below me, was a sea of some metallic looking liquid, as though it was a sea of liquid metal. There were huge buildings that rose out of the metallic sea.I looked up at the sky, it was red.  I could see some metallic liquid waves hitting against the pillar.
Then I focus my gaze infront of me and see a man standing thirty feet opposite of me, he was looking at me.
He was clad in all white. He was very tall, perhaps slightly taller than I was. His Sliver-white hair was brilliant in the light of the sky. He had White eyes, the irises were more white than the scalera of his eyes, making them stand out more. Again I was impressed by my very good vision and intrigued by it.
The man held two swords. He held the same Arsenic blade I held against Zblader. In his left arm, he held a blade that was fairly longer, bigger and simpler than the arsenic blade, except for some shimmering symbols along its blade.

The man commenced walking towards me. His gaze locked on me, was very intimidating.
He came within ten feet of me and then stopped. He examined me from top to bottom.

“So…We finally meet…Flayne”
Said the man

“How do you know my name!?”
I was surprised at his knowledge of my name, I also felt that his voice sounded familiar somehow.

“It took me a long while to get you here Flayne, to drag you into your own conscience”

“What are you talking about?”
I was getting confused already.

“First is first, let me introduce myself…I am Aznaraex, the voice in your head”

In that moment everything had made sense, the voice from the beginning, the person who saved me from Zblader’s sword tip.

“I can tell from your face you have finally understood everything, that’s good, it makes things quicker. Your much more interesting in person, rather than just in mentality”

Most of the things he had said in those moments were either metaphorical or of a strange reality, I was utterly confused, especially from what he said in that particular moment.

“Flayne, you owe me a serious debt, I have saved your life once, which means you owe me a life,
and… a body”

“Huh!?”
I was officially lost in his words at that point, there was no point in trying to figure it out. In that moment, I thought either he was mad, or he was just part of some weird and meaningless dream.

“Let me explain…I once had a physical body, in my past life. I was to be resurrected somehow by someone.
At least that’s what I thought. But someone or something had apparently killed me, then someone else tried to resurrect me. But suddenly instead of having my own body, your soul somehow intercepted the placement of mine, and dragged mine with yours; hence you developed your own body, with me stuck inside your conscience. Though, when I see him again, I will make him suffer. Deimex will pay for turning me into...
Aznaraex had murmured something I couldn't hear.

"What?"

"Nothing, the main thing here for you to understand, is that you have ruined me.”

“What? Look I don’t know what you’re talking about, all I remember is that I just materialized out of the ground and that’s it, I’ve got nothing to do with…”

“YOU HAVE EVERYTHING TO DO WITH IT FLAYNE!!! Don’t test me, ever!
Its because of you that I’m stuck here in your pathetic excuse of a conscience. I want to get out, and the only way for me to do that, is to propose something. I know that you had no control of where your soul was going, of course most elementals know that souls go to the death realm, but that’s a topic for another time.
Flayne..Im going to propose something to you, to make this whole unfortunate event a simple past”

“Yeah? And what do you propose Aznaraex?”

“As I have discovered, we both want one thing…a life. But in order to satisfy those two needs, we have to work together, as much as it disgusts me. The first factor we have to consider is your survival.
If you physically die Flayne, I also die along with your conscience. If you die here, your physical body on the outside is shut down forever. Meaning I am trapped until your body itself dies out.
The physical form you have here is basically the prime representative of your own conscience.
But that may come as confusing for you, so ignore that.
Now, for me to get out, of your conscience, I have to either remake my body, which could take an eternity, or, I have to take control of another body. I Haven’t figured out how to control your body without unbalancing my own existence…yet, since I can’t take that risk, you should be glad.
In the meantime, I’m going to give you a chance to prove yourself to me. To see that I can trust that you can survive until I find a suitable body donor, that closely matches my energy level, my previous physical form and my intellect. Once I find that body donor, I can then figure out how to jump in there and take control of their memories, which gives me the power to control their bodies through muscular-recognition and memory methods, its complex, but you don‘t have to worry about that.
Since I have recently figured out that you’re an amnesiac and have no memory whatsoever, you are useless to me as a donor, don’t be offended, at least you get to keep your body”

Aznaraex waited for my reply

“What am I supposed to prove to you exactly?”
Though I already had a feeling of the answer from seeing the Arsenic blade in Aznaraex’s hand.

“Flayne, if I die, you'll still live on, but if you die, I die aswell, so in that case, you are more important.
Im going to test your abilities to the limit, I warn you, It won`t be easy. If I kill you here in this place, I basically kill myself. The real question is…Are you going to let me die because of your errors?”

Aznaraex lifted the Arsenic blade and threw it towards me.
I barely caught the heavy blade.

“What are you doing!?”

“If I kill you, I kill myself! Are you gonna let me die because you didn`t have the courage to defend yourself!? Like that pathetic performance you showed against Zblader? I helped you that time, what if I can’t help you again? Then were both done for! You are going to prove to me… that I can rely on you to stay ALIVE!!!”

As soon as he had finished his last word, he was instantly next to me, with his blade tip flying to my neck.
In shock, I barely dodged and fell over. I was stumbling to my feet again as he flew at me at an extraordinary speed. I saw his blade swing down towards me, so I tried to block his strike.
My arms felt like they were shattering, literally. The force and strength of his strike was just crazy.
This was a whole lot different from fighting zblader. It felt as though a mountain of steel had clashed against my blade.

Suddenly I felt my arm was cracking. It all happened so fast. Aznaraex’s blade came whistling up towards my throat. I barely dodged again, but with a small cut to my jaw.
The utter wind force of his swing sent me flying into the air. I realized I was falling off the pillar, I thought I was finished. Suddenly I feel myself begin to flap my wings, I didn’t know why, it felt like such a natural reaction. Though it barely did anything due to the fact I had one feathered wing and the other was just bone.
Yet my falling speed seemed to have slowed a bit. I braced myself for impact on a building…I rolled to prevent damage done to my legs, though I ended up injuring my arm severley. The fight had only started and yet I knew I had already lost. Suddenly I look up and Aznaraex is already a meter away from me, diving towards me and ready to crush me with his blade. I moved only a fraction away from his blade. An explosion of dust and ruble had filled the air, sending me flying towards the edge of the building. I found myself half hanging off the edge, with the metallic sea only fifty feet below me.
I struggle to get myself up again and quickly. I suddenly find myself clashing blades again with Aznaraex. I wondered in that moment, how was he so damn fast?

“C'mon Flayne! You did a lot better against Zblader! What happens when you face an opponent far more stronger than I am!?”

I couldn’t imagine someone being stronger than this lunatic. Much less me facing that someone.
While we clashed blades, I decided It was time that I striked. I let go of his blade and side winded it. I swung my blade towards his neck. I saw it was actually getting closer to his neck. I couldn’t believe it, my blade was going to hit his neck, it was a centimeter away from it. Instead of feeling my blade cutting his neck, I felt a huge impact on the left side of my ribs. It felt as though someone had launched a canon next to my side. I was breathless, I felt blood gurgling upwards from my throat and out from my mouth as I flew very fast through the air. I hit a hard object and felt it break behind me, next thing I know I find myself on the floor of a chamber, looking at a destroyed wall in front of me. I try to get up, but it seemed as though I broke my back. I thought I could slightly see Aznaraex standing on the building I was on previously on, a hundred meters away. Just looking. Suddenly he vanished, which caused me to frantically get on my feet, despite my back hurting, though I was glad it wasn’t broken.
I was waiting in the darkness of the chamber. With my sword at the ready. Just silence.
Then I hear the wall behind me break and in came Aznaraex swinging his huge sword into an arc.
Again, we were clashing, though his sword tip was already cutting my throat. If I slipped for a fraction of a second and distance, his blade would freely behead me. I found it hard to hold on, my arms were shaking.
This was it, my arms could not hold on any longer, he was too strong.

“Flayne, I know you can do better than that, c’mon, Don’t you wanna live, are you going to let someone die because you were too weak!? It doesn’t matter if it’s me right now, it could be a friend, a relative, or…a loved one”

From hearing the last three words, suddenly I felt I huge energy develop inside of me, and a huge rage.
I screamed and started striking Aznaraex like a madman.

“THAT’S IT FLAYNE!!! C’MON, PROVE TO ME THAT YOU’RE NOT A WEAKLING!!!”

We started exchanging blows, jumping through the air meters high. It was incredible; I couldn’t believe I was doing such things. It all seemed insane. But Aznaraex was still far more powerful than I was; encouragement alone wasn’t going to help me.
Suddenly we both jumped so high, that we passed the pillar from the beginning. Then we clashed and began falling back towards the pillar, to where it began.
Meanwhile we were falling; we exchanged numerous blows, though I hadn’t once hit Aznaraex, while he clipped me in some places. We were only meters away from the ground. A crashing boom resonated through the air, and I was on the ground, on my back. The dust was clearing and I could see my sword on the ground two meters away from me. I tried to reach it but a blade tip had appeared in my vision, I look up and see Aznaraex towering above me with a face full of wonder, pointing his blade at me.
I failed, I had lost. He was going to kill me and that was the end of it all. Again, I was kissing death in the face, with a sword tip as its main flavor.
But then he removed his sword tip from my neck. I was surprised to no end, and bloody confused.

“That’s good enough. I’m satisfied.”

I got up and picked my sword up from the ground.
“What? But I thought…”

“Nothing, is more precious than having the chance to live again. From your performance, I am satisfied that you can keep us both alive for a while. Flayne, the only reason you were able to regain your position from that previous clash, was because I gave you a reason to fight back. All you need Flayne, is a purpose, a purpose to fight for your life. I see that you have no idea what your purpose or main ambitions are in life. Therefore, you wouldn’t make an ultimate effort to fight for one. Because you don’t know it yet; or you don’t have enough ambition to fight for it.
I believe…that there is no such thing as power, Flayne…Only ambition.
That’s the only thing that has kept me living, ambition.
Without ambition, you don’t have a desire, without desire, you don’t have a will, and without will…You have nothing. You’re no better than a mere animal, a part of nature’s hum-drum, to be wasted into nothing.
A warrior without ambition is like a lion without fangs.
That is what’s missing in you Flayne, ambition. If you don’t have any, then for now, fight for one. Fight for an ambition, then fight harder for what your ambition is.”

Suddenly the environment was starting to become distorted, and Aznaraex began walking away.

“Wait!”

He stopped and turned.

“Were you fighting your hardest? Or were you toying with me!?”

Aznaraex laughed.

“If you find your ambition first, then I’ll give you an answer”

With that everything around me just distorted wildly, until there was no form, until I could only see black.
I suddenly open my eyes, get up and frantically look around.
I check myself for scratches, cuts, bruises, broken arm. Nothing.
Then I realized the sun was up, and Nepycros, Zblader, EmeraldTiger and Jorporel were all looking at me.

“What?”
I asked

“Damn you’re a good sleeper; I’ve been slapping your head around till who knows when, and your damn bird keeps pestering me with its worry. C’mon, it’s time to go”
Said Nepycros

“Sorry guys”
I get up and start walking; I could feel their eyes boring into my back with curiosity.
I heard someone ask silently “What’s up with him?”

I didn’t care, I walked on with some new thoughts to ponder, very intriguing thoughts.

Chapter 50
Learning The Elemental Ropes Classifications
Now that Jorporel had joined our group, our main focus seemed to going to the Life village - so I thought.

So I thought.

According to a map of the Realm (something both Nepycros and I had handy - mine was apparently more up-to-date so we used it.), we had overshot our original course and needed to go northeast about 6 miles.

Somewhere during that journey, ET seemed to be conversing with Laureth'al. I don't know why for sure, but Lyra and I had a pretty good idea consider the new direction that we were about to head in.

To be honest, I still don't really know much about the elements, or the elementals themselves. The elders never really focused much on it when I was young, so I guess I'll start catching up from here. I knew there was Fire, Earth, Water, and Air, but I was walking with what appeared to be Life, Death, Darkness, and Light? What kind of elements were those?!

Starting with me, I suppose. I can imagine the smirk on Lyra's face. You don't know about all the 12 elements on you?

"12?! I thought there were 7 at most!"

Heh, Darkness and Death are two different things, you know. Same goes for Life and Light.

"So, what are those other 4 elements? You probably have a classification with so many, right?"

Well, yes. I'll start with the groups. Fire, Earth and Water and Air are known to us as the "Material" elements.  Everyone knows about them - as naturally they are almost everywhere.  You know about them pretty well from what I can "hear" - Fire is burning destruction and agressiveness, Earth is hardening defense and offense, Water is clever fluidity or cold stoicness, and Air is windy Freedom and creativity.

"What is the classification for Life, Darkness, Death and Light? Also, what strange element was Laureth'al using, this "Aether" that you mentioned?"

Bleh, give me a second. I blinked and suddenly found myself in what appeared to be a field of clouds.

"Wait... how'd I get here?!" I looked around, and sure enough, I saw Lyra, her arms crossed.

Calm down, I've just shut part of your mind out from your body. You're just following everyone else now, and I can always stop the illusion if something happens.

"Isn't that overdoing a bit? You could just tell me."

I demonstrate better. She retorted. She waved her hand and I found us surrounded by 12 orbs of energy. It was very easy to distinguish the elements that I knew -
A red orb with a symmetrical flame inside it - Fire.
A sea blue orb with 3 spheres and 2 rings that resembled a raindrop - Water.
A brown orb with 2 white tablets engraved within - Earth.
A sky blue orb with two blue wings within it - Air.
A green orb with what appeared to be some Flora in it - possibly Life ? Yes.
A purple orb with a skull - clearly Death. As if no one would've guessed.
A dark orb with... Memento!- Darkness The misunderstood... nice catch with the weapon there.A white orb with some sort of strange star - Light? It's not strange! That's Solaris, our sun!
"I didn't know that, but what are those other 4?
A teal orb with a with a ringed star?
An orange orb with a black moon with 3 rings?
A pink orb with a dotted spiral?
A yellow orb with an infinity loop?"

Well, try to guess them.

"Can't you just tell me?!"

No. I want to see how close you'll get. Her mischievious grin told me that she expected me to goof. I wasn't going to fall for it.

"The teal... Aether?" Well, that was hard.

"I have a good memory." I retorted, and focused back on the other three.

"The pink... Chaos?
The yellow... Inifinity?
The orange ... what even involves an odd symbol like that?!"

I turned to look at her. She was laughing.

Okay, okay, you were close.

"Just tell me already."

The Pink is Entropy. It represents the randomness of the universe.
The Yellow is Time. It's rather self-explanitory.
For the orange, what keeps you attached to the ground? What causes you to fall when you jump?

"Hmm... Gravity?"

Correct.

"So everything in this world is assigned to an element?"

Sort of. Try firing a Holy Flash at me.

I complied, and she held up her arm as the white beam of light flew at her. A Tower Shield appeared and the blow harmlessly glanced off. This shield is a good example. An oridinary shield, with no elemental alignment, used by elementals far and wide. It is the 13th classification - Other. While not a true element, it represents factions, rogues, those that can emulate an element but do not belong in any of the 12. They can range from everyday objects like a Longsword to rare items like a Diamond.

"Have you ever considered that fact that you're somewhat biased?"

I suppose. She sighed. Being schooled in the academy of Sanctum Solaris, we were subjected to constant rantings about how certain elements like Darkness and Death were "evil" and must be banished. I really disagree with that - all elements coexist and at the same time oppose each other is my current philosphy, based on the materials I have managed to study and some real "material" obtained through the Underworld Markets.

"The Underworld?! You risked your reputation by going to a criminal market for that knowledge?"

Yes. One of my friends once said that you can't deny the truth, regardless of how much you blank it out. I only went to that length in order to gain true knowledge, not to break the rules or anything.

"Do you ever think that there's more to the elements?"

I suppose. Tell you what - how about we ask Nepycros and the others? I'm thinking we may both have a lot ot learn - especially since my memories seem to blur after the little I remember from my education.

"Sounds good to me."

I zoomed out again. Lyra and I talk pretty quickly - we hadn't gotten very far.

"Yo, Nepycros."

"What?"

"What do you know about the elements? I originally thought there were just 4 and now it seems there are twelve."

"Lemme guess, Lyra told you about the rest? Well, what could she possibly have neglected to tell you?"

"Hmph, it's not my fault that she is an amnesiac. I was just wondering - do you ever consider that you have elemental biases? I think I might need to know a bit more about Darkness since Lyra is well... Light and all."

"Light, is she? Then she probably isn't the best person to talk to. They have a rather... one-dimensional view of the world. Strict dogma, and all that. Well, if you want to know about Darkness, then what you see is what we are based on. Hiding in the shadows, corrupting, assassinating, the full works. At least... that's what they've probably taught you. In truth, we Darkness aren't evil. People just don't like what they can't see, and like people who look out for themselves even less."

That jerk! He doesn't even know about Angels like me!

"We'll explain it to him later I guess." I shot back. "What are you views on the other elements?"

"Well, if there's even a bit less xenophobia in Lyra than your average Angel, she'd probably have told you about classifications. Let's start with... Material. Probably the ones you're familiar with. Earth, Air, Water, and Fire.
"Earth focuses on the material. Mass, solid mass. They've got fortresses that would take a Meteor to break, and that's only on the groud level. They've got tunnel networks that are rumored to extend past the entire Elestian ground. Some say that they've been stocking up on plants from other continents. Whether or not you believe is up to you. They focus on being right there, and their size means they can take a hit. Defensive-wise, you can't touch them. Good for bodyguards, mind you. It's a pain to get past them to get the hit.
"Air follws next. Unlike Earth, they aren't bound to the ground. They've got a more... free agenda. Or at least, they used to. Nowadays, they're focusing more on military power. And who could blame them? They have the skies. They like to have a bird's eye view of things. You can't touch 'em if they get airborne. Their towers go so high, it becomes hard to breathe at their peaks. If you get in a fight with them, they might fight dirty, so hold your breath.
"Water is the element of ebb and flow. It's got a good representation for magic itself. On the one hand, the power might be so powerful, not even the most powerful defence can hold it back. On the other, it might be so small, a trickle even, that noone notices it, until a crack forms. This is how Water works. Beyond that, they've managed to control ice, which, I'm sorry to admit, is a bit stronger than my own tainting skills. Fortunately, ice melts. They've still got a reputation for using water in the oddest places. They even pull it out of thin air, so it becomes even harder to corner them. They have the most agility. Even the assassins of Darkness could learn a thing or two from their silent footsteps, and near impossible acrobatics.
"Fire finishes this group up. They've got the most hot-headed, temperamental, blundering power houses of all the elements, in my opinion. Their only problem, is that half can't use their power correctly. The ones who have precision fire, those are the ones you'd rather avoid. When they put their mind to it, they can make flames that soar to the skies, and leap over the burnt corpses they make. There are others, too... Some say that there are 'Berzerkers', ones who take synthetic drugs to make themselves more powerful. If you get caught in a fight with one, make sure you have a decent escape route. One blast of heat could sear off every ounce of flesh you have.
"On to the next group. Cardinal. This set covers that which governs the movement and stability of the universe. They represent energy, motion, relativity between objects, and above all, the power that exists beyond what our eyes can see. Gravity, Aether, Entropy, and Time.
"Time's a rather patient bunch. They judge everything in 3 stages - Past, Present and Future. So when something happens, they check the past to see if it ever happened, then see what's happeneing right now, and then they decide what to do. It seems simple, but sometimes it gets real challenging. You tell me how to assassinate someone who already sees it coming."

"You don't?"

"Things don't always work like that."

"With Aether, they're whatever we aren't. Beings that can warp other dimensions, beings that can see your hand reaching for a knife even when you're wearing a cloak that conceals your most subtle movement. You attempt to sneak up on them and poof, they phase away.  Some of the Aether elementals have mastered this so well that they just teleport by looking at a mirror. Makes me think of the trick Emeraldtiger pulled a while ago even."

I thought back to the "wave" of power that Lyra had felt and ET landing next to us with a grumbling Nepycros a few seconds later.

"So.... Entropy and Gravity?"

"'Entropony', or Entropy as we call it is just all about being random. One minute they pull rabbits out of hats and then next they'll be swinging at you with hammers and Discords and mutating you. There's not much description needed here. If you fight one, the likely thing to do is forget you're fighting an elemental, and rather, that you're fighting something with 2 arms, 2 legs, and half a brain.

With Gravity, they're about three things - Technology, Order, and Currency. They have massive forts, armies with specialized soldiers and make these strange creatures out of metal called "Machines" - they're extremely strong and have served many purposes in their army - including effective bodyguards. I've heard only Fire and Water have managed to get their hands on some of these "Machines" - Fire because they have such good ties in combat and Water got some at the cost of some rare quilless Pufferfish - those are considered a delicacy you know. When they're not focuses on combat they're writing some papers, on guard duty, or making money. Quite the efficient element unlike the slapdash pile of Entropy Mutators."

"Now, on to Spiritual.
Light is sadly a pile of smiting-obsessed angels for the most part."

Please don't judge me like that Nepycros. Whenver I hear that stereotype it's almost like someone stabbed me for no reason.

"Lyra seems pretty nice, you know," I tried to convince Nepycros.

He sighed. "I'm going to have to tell him the truth, so throw up if you need too, Lyra - at least you don't get it anywhere.

The majority of Light is very intelligent and good in battle and magic - however they're just about as obsessed with smiting as expertise as they are with there talents. Most of their hatred goes to Darkness - they believe that Light must eradicate the Darkness for some unfathomable traditional reason that they only know."

Excuse me? I really never understood why either.

"You're also an amnesiac.

While Darkness is sort of okay with killing, we're more thinkers and sleepers - we Shades generally spend most of our life sleeping in the calm darkness until we are called or needed for something. When we're awake, we like to think and debate the concept of each element and why it exists. I have to admit I'll give Light credit for having some determined debaters as well that also had sense - but those kinds are rare.  Overall, we want balance, not corruption. The yin to the yang. The shadow that exists in the light. It's unnatural for one to exist and the other to not, and we Darkness elementals don't want that imbalance to occur.

Death is what is says - Death. They are the wardens of the realm of the dying souls that prepare to head into oblivion. They're supposedly "caretakers" of these dying souls - but they can call them up as all sorts of fierce warriors and beasts in bone when they need cannon fodder for an army. It's suprisingly effective, considering that elementals in the world die every day. Every time they go into battle, the outcome doesn't matter. Their army has simply grown."

Life is the element of growth, healing, and one of the reasons we're still walking here. Life's domain is that of the forests, the vines, any green plants goes, along with the "ordinary" creatures like Frogs and insects. The have their fair share of oddities as well like this spell called "Genesis" that copies a creature biologically and Scorpions.  It's not fun trying to assasinate these guys - you think you've killed them but their healing powers reverse the damage 1 second later - along with a swarm of angry frogs looking to rip you to pieces.

And then, there's Other, which is all the generic stuff in these worlds or the ones that don't belong. They're entities that have mastered magic that can't be classified under an element - I guess your formerly existing tribe, the Fluxi used magic, right?"

"Yes, but it consisted of things like Pyrokinetics, Scrying and Teleportation. Isn't that technically Fire, Time, and Aether? Also we're forbidden to use magic except under dire cicrumstances - some ancient tradition or honor code of sort."

"You catch on quickly. I guess you could consider the powers learned by the tribes here in certain elements - but what's different is that you didn't specifically assign them to any element. For example, I saw a mural of what appeared to be a native casting blue fire. Fire isn't usually blue, so it could be some kind of spell that imitates fire, thus the need of the Other classification in the Elemental system."

"Have there ever been any significant.... attempts to discover a new element?"

"Some have tried, but the elemental elders struck them down before you could say fourteen. There were some useless attempts by some researchers at elements like the elements of Luck and Ocean, but there have been a few that almost gained momentum - if I remember correctly the last near-succesful attempt to classify a new element was involving Elements called Acid, Blood, and Energy."

"Do you ever consider the fact that you have stereotypes against the other elements?"

"Of course. No one's perfect and with thirteen known factions in this world there is bound to be countless misunderstandings - none that I like to any degree."

"Well, thanks for explaining the system of Elements to me you two. Is there anything else I should know?"

"Probably not. If you need to know you'll learn it on the journey."

I'm not so approving of the whole "learn it unexpectedly" thing, but I can't remember much more about the elements that I might have known. You have a good grip on the general idea I'd say.

"Well, okay then." We resumed to silently trudging along the forest trails. I noticed that Flayne appeared to be in deep thought with himself, but just as I was about to ask him what was wrong -

Don't interfere.

"Wha-?"

Shhh. Let me listen. Her silouhette frowned as if concentrating, but then became worried. I think Condor was right - there's someone else inside Flayne.

"A Mark?"

Maybe. I don't think it's impossible for two marks to inherit the same source, and Mythias seemed like he had no host and was just temporarily invading.

"Well, what do you think we should do?"

Keep an eye on Flayne. Now I know how he suddenly swung into action when we tried to Purge Mythias - that was his other mark. He might be a threat, considering his behavior.

"Can you tell his element?"

Hmm....the Elemental's Death, from the leaked thoughts I have. I also picked up something about a "resurrection" - probably related to how he was revived as a Mark.

"That makes me wonder... Lyra, how are Marks made?"

Her eyebrows shot up, and she sighed. To be honest, I don't know. If you wanted to know you'd have to ask how I died and somehow.... I don't remember how I died.

"Well, you at least remembered the dying part."

Yes, but that's seems like only a drop in the bucket on how the whole thing works. I suppose we have something new to find out about now besides the fact I have all your sister's memories and few of mine.

"Alright..." I decided to quiet down and keep heaving towards the Life Village, in hopes of finding out what Emeraldtiger was supposed to do.

"Of course..." Nepycros said after awhile, "With all that's going on, Marks seem to be the new thing. Everyone I meet has one... If you want a new element, you're probably looking at it."

Chapter 51
The Quiet Conversation
I could smell that we were approaching a body of water. It smelled more like a river than ocean.
We were coming up on the first branch of a forked river, when Laureth'al began to talk with Lyra, Zblader, and myself.
""Lyra, I must speak with you a bit before we go much further."
"What is it that you need to talk about, Laureth'al?"
"First off, allow Zblader to hear us."
"Done.
"Zblader, don't say it out loud, but can you hear me?"

He answered in his mind, "Yes, Laureth'al, I can hear you."
I also in my mind, "I can hear you too." I then asked, "Can anyone else hear us?".
Simultaneously, Lyra and Laureth'al said "No." Then Laureth'al continued "Only the four of us will know of what we speak till the time is right."
The natural intuition Lyra had was bestowed upon Zblader, So he asked "EmeraldTiger can't return home like he wanted to, can he?"
Laureth'al answered, "Unfortunately no, he cannot."
I interupted, "Why can't I go home?!"
"There is still too much prejudice for mixed elementals right now in some of the elements."
Lyra added, "The one good thing that has happened is you are now part of an element that is not known to have such animosity towards these things. They tend to treat everyone as if they are important."
Then Laureth'al asked, "How do you know that about my kind?" but before Lyra could answer. "I'm sure you must heard of us helping individuals from different elements."
Zblader then asked, "What is your plan since EmeraldTiger can't go into the life village that he was supposed to live in? We also need food."
Laureth'al answered, "You will tell the group that we can go no further when Lyra knows we are close enough. You then ask Nepycros to go into the village and get us some supplies, while the rest of us wait at a temporary camp."
"Sounds good." Zblader said. "We will go with that. I have a plan... it depends on how everyone will react but I need to make sure nobody else knows about it besides us four."
And what kind of plan is that? Laureth'al asked.
"Knowning Nepycros, he will probably do something that gets the Life elementals' suspicion."
Did you mix up your elemental compositions alreadly? I told you it was Light that distrusted Darkness, not Life. Lyra interjected.
"Nobody ever approves of stealing, and seeing Nepycros's behavior in the last village makes me think he is the kind of person who just walks in and does anything he wants."
How do you know he will repeat this behavior? Laureth'al added.
"Well, I didn't tell you or EmeraldTiger this.... but he stole Lucien's axe and converted into some odd weapon called Memento." Zblader paused, then continued "If he doesn't value people's personal belongings he probably has the least hesistance in taking items."
Laureth'al answered, "You know Lyra and I can force him to put it back."
"Only if you were aware if it was there. Being Darkness, he can hide things - it took Lyra and me a while to realize he had taken the axe."
"I think it is worth risking." I spoke up. "If it fails we can always say that it was a misunderstaning and stay at Life village - I've never heard any animosity there against other elements."
Lyra frowned when I said this. Blade, from I can tell from your sister's memories you can invent some really complicated and risky plans when you put your mind to it. Are you sure about this?
"It is worth the risk." Zblader answered. "EmeraldTiger, Laureth'al, are you okay with this?"
"Yes, if it does backfire we're not going to make things that worse." Laureth'al agreed. I just nodded.
Let's hope your plan actually does work and we don't end up in trial in the life village or something. Lyra sighed.
"I think I will go with Nepycros to see it there was anything left behind in my hut, and so communication can be maintained if anything goes wrong."

We finally reach the bank of the river. The section we find ourselves at is too wide to cross. "Condor will you find a place for us to cross?, Flayne asked. Condor first flies to the east, shortly returning and heading the other direction indicating that west is the way to go. We walk a bit to find Condor waiting for us at a low point in the river. Condor then returns to Flayne's shoulder. We make it across the river. We start to walk again, and I notice a bit of grass that seemed to be more worn than the grass around it. I pause for a momenent and it becomes clear to me that others have traveled through here.
Jorporel notices me stop to look at the ground, "What are you doing? he asked. "I think I have discovered the path to follow" I answered. "Hey everyone, I think this is the way to go", as I pointed out the path to them. We followed the path till we came to the second branch of the forked river. Again, we crossed without any trouble.

"We're really close to Life Village according to the map." Nepycros announced after a few more miles of river-crossing and jungle-traversing.

"Hey goes nothing." I heard Zblader mumble. "Oi, Nepy."
If Nowhere is Somewhere, and Somewhere is Over there, How can we be Anywhere?

Chapter 52
Training; Part 2
Lay down. You need to be absolutely still for this. Our consciences will now merge, myself getting half and you getting half. She had told me enough times, and I understood. Blah blah blah mumbo jumbo be still la di dah don't resist my mind, whoop de doo. 'Cuse me? Her mental image raised an eyebrow at me. "Damn you, mind reader." Oty, my beloved pet, watched as I lay on my back, my sword at my hilt. My hand rests on it. Sleep. That will help me seize control of half your conscience mind. I shall leave you half your left hemisphere and half your right. Without your left, you would take unnecessary risks, but without your right, I cannot assess your style fighting. You will feel completely alert. Let's do this. I force myself to relax. My mind races. I remember about half my past now, but I feel something crucial was missing before I hit my head on whatever the hell that was. I dwell on the image of my father, a dark man in a cyan cloak. He was mostly gone from my life, although he was wise and had good intentions. I can tell he had places to be, people to meet, but most of all, promises to keep. He had an ancient air about him. My mother was an Auburn Nymph in a gang lead by Jezebel, the mighty mistress. She had... unusual ways to make her living. She cared for me during the day, but I had to fend for myself at night. I usually hid from the DraftBots, a machine made by Oppression&Order Technologies. They stole many young boys off the street and put them in the Force of Gravity, an army that served our proud nation. My grandfather reminded me very much of a dog. He had a long staff that had ancient power stored within. He died when I was about eight years of age. He was in the First Great War and the Second Great War. He met my grandmother on the battlefield. My mother refused to tell me where he found her, how he found her, and why he found her. He died in the Second great war. He was poisoned by Life's shield. Whenever I see one of those blasted shields, I make sure it never sees another battle. My grandmother, well, she died giving birth to my dad. I have always felt an air of confusion when I think of her.

Edit the rest tomorrow.

Chapter 53
Knowing each other, Part 2
I really didn't think of it, but I didn't like the idea of telling my life to people I just knew... I looked at Marisa and Tremor, both looking at me seriously. I decided there was no point in discussing, and I started telling the story. "So, I guess I should start..."

"As you know I'm a Fire elemental, but, apart from that, I'm a Rage elemental" Tremor just looked as if any of this interested him, he probably knew what that meant, but Marisa seemed to be clueless.

"Rage elementals are a kind of Fire elemental that is constantly given Rage Potions, that increase their strenght and aggressiveness, and gives a burst of reckless rage" I stopped here for a while, and the fire got smaller.

Both Marisa and Tremor looked at me "Is something wrong?" Marisa looked worried, and Tremor didn't seem to be the kind of person that easily
I smiled. They're worried about ME
"I was just thinking how to go on" I empowered the flames and kept talking "My mom was a scientist that swapped her blood with a Rage liquid similar to Rage Potion's. I, as her son, was exposed to those Rage fluids from my very conception.
"The day of my birth, I was seen as a promise to the Realm of Fire, I was supposed to be the ultimate killing machine, and they fed me with Rage Potions constantly..."

My speech was interrupted by Marisa's stomach... "That was cute" Said Tremor, bluffing.

"Shut up, I haven't eaten for a while" Her stomach made that noise again. She took out a fish out of her little bag and - oh, it slipped through her hands... onto the fire. She then really looked mad.

"Hey, calm down, I have some food with me" I took the last piece of beef out of my pants and handed it to her.

"Thanks Krathos" When Marisa moved to grab the piece of beef, her hair fell into the fire.

"You're burning your hair" Tremor was looking her hair as if it was of no importance, while Marisa desperately turned the fire off. "Look what you've done, now we can see nothing" The forest was totally dark. I could only see the stars, and one of the moons. What was it's name?

I came back from my thoughts and lighted up the fire, just to see Marisa's angry face and Tremor holding his laughs. We will have to fix some stuff, but I like my new friends.
I decided to go on and end my story... "When I grew up, I got tired of killing people, and being treated as a machine..." they both put their attention back on me "so I refused to fight, and I promised to myself that I would never, ever, get enraged again, but... that..." I couldn't go on.

Tremor and Marisa were looking worried again. I forced a smile "...but that's another story. My General in charge didn't like it at all, so I had a fight with him. After that, I was exiled, and ended up in some desertic territory far away from any help I could ask for"

"So who won?" said Tremor "You or the General?"

"None of us. We both lost a lot that day..." I lost my only friend, and he lost his son. I was unable to go on with the story. That memories hurt me too much.
Fortunately, Marisa changed the subject "So, what's about you Tremor?"

"I pass" He looked to the trees, as if he saw something more important, and forgot about his former questions.

"C'mon, Krathos told us his life, and you don't even dare to tell us your real name?"

"Don't worry Marisa, I'm sure he will tell us tomorrow. Maybe he just needs to think. You both try to get some sleep, I will look for some food"

Tremor looked again at me, and sighted. "My real name is Tremor, I didn't lie, Krathos, but what I was doing in Covius, I can't tell you. Just that I am an Earth elemental that learned to master Gravity magic."

That's more than what I expected. I guess it's nice on his part, since he looks so closed to most people. "Well, it's good to know that, Tremor"

"Oh, and by the way, here you have some food" He took a little brown rock, that suddenly expanded into what looked like some kind of bread "It's Earth elemental's food. Lots of proteins, you may like them" He looked at my muscles and then back to me.

"What are you trying to tell me?" I moved my biceps rythmically and went to sleep with a smile. Unfortunately, it didn't last for much. I nearly couldn't sleep. I kept thinking of what happened that day, long ago...

I was sent to one of my hardest missions. My entire troop was killed and I ended up alone in a rebel Lava Golem camp. I killed every one of them, there was elementals', childrens', innocent creatures' blood all over... And I kept killing them, until none of them survived.
When I returned from the battle, I was exhausted. I didn't have a scratch, but everything hurted inside me. I couldn't understand why I killed them. I used to kill in battles, but this time, I killed just because...
When I got back to the main camp, Fire's 1st rank General, Galtyr, called me to report what happened and congratulated me. I told him that I didn't want to fight any more, I quitted. He got mad, and I decided to escape. I shot a fire blast on his face and started to mindlessly run away.
I didn't get too far. Galtyr quickly recovered and shot me on my right side. I fell to the floor, he grabbed me, and took out a Rage Potion from his bag. I was too scared to use my elemental powers, so I just tried to stop him with my left hand. He burned it and threw the Liquid Rage on my mouth while he covered my nose. I could see the anger in his face. It was half burned, and he had only one eye open.
But then the Rage made effect. I was still with some momentum from all the Rage Liquid I was forced to drink in the battle, so I easily threw him into the air with my feet, and started to kill everybody around me. Three fire guards threw me dual hand Fire Bolts, but I had already overheated my skin a lot, so that actually felt like a breeze. I jumped onto one of them and cut his head with my own heating hands. After that I made a fire ball in between my hands, until it was 1 meter high, and threw it into the weapons tent. It exploded and lots of flaming swords flied all over, killing more inoccent people.
Then it happened. Kaotyr, my best friend and the son of Galtyr, appeared from nowhere. He had probably just returned from his mission, and tried to stop me. I was so crazy that I threw him a fire bolt. He flied some meters and rammed into the ground.
When I saw that my best friend wasn't moving, I started to walk closer to him. I felt how I was getting hotter and hotter as my rage grew. I heard that when a powerful elemental overheats himself too much, he releases all his accumulated fire energy in the form of a cataclysmic explosion. It didn't matter. I had lost my only friend.
Before I reached him, he looked at me. His face was burned, and his armor, melted over his body. With his last forces, he said me "stop it".
I stopped. I stopped heating. I stopped feeling the rage. I stopped killing people. I started to run. I started to hate what I did. I promised to myself, not to be enraged again. Ever...

Chapter 54 - Unwanted Company

"No, just no," I did my best to stress. Especially the part with the no. "There's no way I'm dragging you along with me, Emerald." They actually thought I was going to bring EmeraldTiger with me to pinch food! It's bad enough I'd begin traveling more later, but worse that, not only am I stealing food from a region that has never had reconaiscence, but they're saying that I have to bring along a Life elemental with no real experience in any sort of situation like this! I glanced suspiciously at Zblader- had he said something?

"Look, if you're going to blame me for him wanting to go, that's like saying I'm his dad or something." he replied, as if reading my mind. Oh wait, but he had a girl's soul inside him that could enter my mind. It probably wasn't going to be hard to predict what I would say.

"Despite that, he'll only slow me down! He probably doesn't even know where the food supply IS!" I retorted, desperately.
"His sense of smell is strong, though. He could sniff out the food supply, and lead you to it. You can get into the Life Village undetected with him, can't you?" Blader threw in. I sighed. He was trying to coax me into gaining confidence in my own abilities.

"Fine... Fine! You can come with me, Emerald. But if you make one little noise, don't expect me to stick around to take half the heat."

"Fair enough," EmeraldTiger replied nonchalantly. With that, I set off, once again bound for the Life Village, with circumstances that were even less desirable than my last visit.

*************

"Okay, let's move in," I signaled to EmeraldTiger. Suprisingly he did well for the intial entrance - we got by the guards rather quickly without making a sound or tripping a vine. EmeraldTiger appeared to be familar with layout of the security here - Surprising, considering he had spent all of 3 hours in this place. I was to learn later that Laureth'al had helped him by scanning the area - his instinct with the guards did the rest.

We made it into the outskirts of the village. It was too risky to go back to Emerald's hut. It was probably being inspected in an attempt to find out where he is. Ironic that he, for a brief moment, was a mere 10 meters away from the scene that brought his promising military career to a close.

After several signals later, we made it into the next level of the village. I led ahead, unable to Cloak, for Emerald would surely get lost if he couldn't see me. I turned to him, and rapped my left hand's knuckles on the back of my right hand 3 times, making no noise, sending the message, "Can you tell where the food is, yet?" The nodded reply came as a relief. We were getting closer. I slowed down, letting my companion take the lead. The inward journey is the easy part, the hard part is loading up and leaving. I was confident we could fit enough food in my pack for at least 3 months of journey (not a matter of size, but a matter of spoiled food), and getting out would only be hard if the guards decided to look our way. Of course, I had half a mind to reject Emerald's request to see his sister altogether. It would simply be idiotic to actually tell someone we were raiding the village's food stocks. But if he insisted, I could always make my escape, and perhaps make it back to him before he got found out.

Unfortunately, both the loading, escaping, and meeting with relatives were to be the unsuccessful parts of the plan. Just as we were closing in on the nearby food supply, my supposedly feline-like friend tripped... on a vine. The crash sounded as though pots had shattered, and I knew that there would be a sleepy Life elemental waking up the next morning to find a ruined garden, courtesy of Emerald's supposed "nocturnal vision". We continued a few more steps, hoping noone would notice, but then I sensed them. I stopped moving altogether, rigid for a moment, then relaxed. Emerald bumped into me, and before he could signal a question, I said to him, in a perfectly normal tone, "Well, that didn't work. Don't worry, they won't kill us outright, not since you're traveling with me." Then the lanterns were lit, and at least 15 Life elementals (some of which I recognized from my last "visit" here) were surrounding every possible escape point. They had learned clearly.

I heard my friend's exasperated sigh. "It was a good attempt, though," he said good-naturedly.

Several minutes later...

I was surprised to see Zblader, Jorporel and Flayne escorted into the prison chambers, and into the cells opposite the one Emerald and I were so graciously being given residence. One of them must've lit a fire, an odd mistake, but an easy one nonetheless. Mistakes are normally harder than attempts to avoid or rectify them. Oddly enough, the bird Flayne hung out with wasn't around. I coulda sworn that they were inseparable. I knew we were in for a rough time. A Death elemental, an escaped prisoner, and a Life elemental gone missing only hours after enlistment in the military. I knew this would cause even more misery, but I simply had to ask myself, How could this get any worse?

Suddenly the gurads appeared to be conversing with a figure near the entrance of the building - then they turned around and yelled "Alright, you're free to go." They weren't happy - but hey, if they tried to attack us we could always stun them with mind tricks or just stab them without breaking a sweat. Just leave it to the little people in my friends' heads.

I'm sorry for interrupting your story, but have you considered asking Zanz for permission to publish a novel about Elements?  Your work here is impeccable, all of yours.

That was on our agenda. But that'll come when we're actually ready to get something out of this.

Side Story 6
Mental Training
So,Tania. I looked up to see James sitting by the creek that we had decided to rest at.

"Huh?" His projection shimmered and he appeared to be thinking, but I decided to interrupt him anyway.

Well.... how strong are you really?

"Why would you ask me that? You saw me fight in the Arena."

It's just that... there are different types of strength. Want to have a mental practice match?

"Sure." I closed my eyes and found myself standing in the cloudly-like realm that was my "mind" apparently. But I didn't see James.

Suddenly, two air crests came out of nowhere. I took out my staff and quickly did a 180-degree slash - a modification of the "Tornado Dance" technique I had learned a while ago from Lucien. I turned to face a giant spectre of wind, who slowly morphed until it was a half-dragonoid figure slightly bigger than me, wielding two wind sabres. I didn't take a second to think who was doing this.

"James?! You don't usually go all out right away!"

Forgive me, Tania. He fired a tornado from one of his Wind Sabres, But today, I'm serious with the training.

"Going all out from the start, eh?" I hurled a few knives at him - despite his immaterial appearance he was as solid as any normal elemental would be. Knowing this, James quickly blocked - but knowing this I had tied some of knives together to make a chain. One of these "chains" wrapped around his sword and grazed him in the leg.

Being one of his stronger projections, he naturally didn't flinch.

Flaming Fox! He cried, and a streak of flame shot towards me, shaped like a fox. This was a clever projectile that was actually a familliar - you had to destroy it, not evade it. It was good for practice, but the fox summoned this time was clearly more aggressive and ready to fight.
I easily avoided it's intial strikes and counterslashed, despite it's fury - it dissipated into ashes only to reveal the dark purple bolts that seemed to come out of nowhere. I spun my lance in a circle, hoping to deflect them, but the moment they hit me, all went black.

When I opened my eyes again, I saw a burning village - soldiers slaughtering the innocent, children crying, and mothers screaming. I covered my ears - this had to be some sort of illusion, something James was trying to test me with. 'But why was he showing me something so cruel?' I thought to myself.

I saw a man get dragged out of his house, and get stabbed.

No. Was that my father? Had this really happened?

I soon turned around to see a boy writhing in pain, his chest covered with blood.

Was that the Fluxi boy I met at the tournament a few years ago? The one I beat so easily and told him to come back later? But wait no... he was dead. The Fluxi were GONE.
No, it's an illusion. This can't be real, everything's so conflicted. I heard a scream - and realized it came from my own mouth, as I looked down at my leg. An arrow had pierced it.

No... this can't be happening! I CAN'T DIE LIKE THIS!

Everything went black, again, and when I opened my eyes I found myself staring at the creek again, sweating with horror. I turned to a clearly worried James.

"WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!" I almost screamed, but then saw he was about to cry.

I-i-i'm sorry Tania. I didn't expect that your mind had such little resistance to this new... thing I learned.

"What is that bolt you fired earlier? How did it create such a realistic illusion? And how was I able to break it? Where'd you learn it?"

Okay, slow down. He said. His own hands were shaking. I don't really know where I learned this - I just knew it along with my current arsenal of spells like I'd known it forever. I don't understand why or how it's there - all I know is that it uses the opponent's mind against them.

"Against them? Like as in giving them a Nightmare?" I thought back to the illusion i had witnessed.

No, not a Nightmare. It's much more realistic - and from I saw now and it involves dying. I guess its some sort of sick mixture of Darkness and Death magic - but I don't ever remember learning such a spell! His voice shook. I was hoping that maybe you would have some answers after I tried to use it but it's so... freakish after seeing it first hand instead of inscribed in my mind. I... I...

"Just... that spell seems so deadly, even if just for a short time. Let's just... put it away, or save or something. Maybe make it our last resort."

Yeah... he nodded in agreement. Yeah....you're okay right?

"Of course I'm okay!" he seemed so worried, he needed cheering up, and I smiled to prove it. "Come on, let's keep going."

He just slowly nodded, but at least I saw a grin try to form on his face.

Chapter 54
The Escape

I watched the outsides of the barred window as the day went by and as Nepycros argued with Emerald on how it was his fault he was caught, while Zblader sat there alone thinking.
Strangely, I had this feeling, since Condor suddenly disappeared. I asked myself, do I really miss him that much? It seemed to me that I had some kind of relationship with him.
I thought it was better off he left, and not to be caged up here with me.
I saw Jorporel slowly came walking towards me and said:

"I must be a bad luck charm, as soon as I joined you guys, suddenly we all get caught and locked up"

I looked at him, he seemed confused, sad and lonely.

"Nah, It's my fault that we got caught, thanks to my memory problems, I forgot we were not supposed to light a fire, they must have spotted us there. No superstition as I recall"

"It's...It's just that I'm confused,  I don't know anything, I don't know where I came from, how I got here, who I am, what am I doing here. Nothing, what is my purpose?"

When I heard that, it reminded me of myself when I first rose from the earth.
The confusion, the first breath of life. I couldn't believe how fast time had passed, I was already close to being a month old.

"Hey, don't worry, take it all in slowly. You're still shocked from the impact. You know...I'm in that same stage right now aswell. As far as I'm concerned, I'm barely a month old"

He looked at me confused.

"A month old? How is that even possible?"

"Well, it started like this..."

Half an hour passed before I finished telling my short life story. It felt good to be able to talk to someone who could relate to me.

"You see? You and I are not that much different, except for my stupid instant memory loss problems"

Jorporel laughed. It was a strange sound, a bit melodic but rough.

"Thats amazing though, you coming out of the ground like that and condor meeting up with you, I have to say, condor is one amazing bird, could've killed me with his outstanding speed"

"Oh yeah, sorry about that, I guess he must have been angry at you for falling on him. Though he's never really been provoked like that before, even when he's annoyed. it's strange. Did that instant revival thing really happen?"

"Yeah, I though he was dead for sure. Amazingly, I was proven wrong, It was amazing"

I wondered about it for a while.
It seemed that Nepycros and Emerald finally stopped. I looked around the cell.
It was musty and filled with cobwebs. It wasn't very big either, we each had an average diameter of about a meter to ourselves, so the argument was basically in my ear.
I looked at the other cells in front of us, they were empty. It seemed we were the only ones in the cell. I could see the guard just standing there in front of the prison entry. Though I slightly make out the sound of snoring. He was asleep standing.

"Hey Nepy"

"What?"

"You're basically...a shadow right?"

"Mostly yeah, what of it?"

"You could try materializing out to the otherside of the bars"

"Flayne, Just because I'm a shadow, doesn't mean solid bodies can walk through other bodies... Unless, you're Aether."

"Oh, Damn"

"Yeah you said it, this is the second time I'm behind bars"
said EmeraldTiger.

"Me too"
said Zblader

Another hour had passed. The boredom and hunger were really getting to me.
Suddenly I hear loud footsteps coming from outside.
I turn my head as the others realized it too. We looked at the entrance and see a really big soldier of some sort went up to the sleeping guard.

"FOOL!!!"
yelled the big soldier

The guard jumped in surprise

"Sleeping again on duty are we!?"

"No sir, I mean, please forgive me, It's been too long since my last shift switch! Im sorry please forgive me!"

"Get out of my sight before I rip your head OFF!!!"

The guard fled to the outside, leaving the huge supposedly sargeant alone.
He walked towards us hastily. He examined each of us and sneered in Jorporel's direction.
Suddenly, he took out a key from his brown leather pouch and started to unlock the door.
We were all surprised, I thought, Is this guy for real? Or does he want to fight us?
The door opened and he stood aside and motioned us to go.

"You're letting us go?"
asked Zblader

"Yes, there's not much time, Eventually the elite guard will be here any minute thanks to the other fool that ran away"
Said the sargeant.

"Why are you helping us?"

"No time to explain, listen very carefully. when you exit this facility, turn left, without anyone seeing you, run straight towards a tavern named "The Redeye", you'll see its hanging wooden sign. As soon as you get to it, hide in the alley next to it. Looking back out of the alley to the left again, there will be a gate that leads into a barracks, the lazy guards should be sound asleep. Creep through the gate, and into the barracks. The barracks should have a small shed at the end of it in the right corner. Get into it and find a trapdoor on the floor, it should be under the red carpet. Open it and jump in, make sure you pull the carpet back over you and close it. There will be a tunnel that starts from your position, keep walking through it until you reach a hole above you, climb out and you should be approximately a kilometer away from the fortress. You must go quickly, now!"

"Alright, thank you"
The sargeant nodded.

Zblader motioned us with a flick of his neck to go.
Suddenly Condor came flying in and I lifted my arm up. Condor landed on it.
"Hey where have you been at?"
He only squaked.
Suddenly the Sargeant made a change in his speech pattern.
"C'mon now, geh' out of mah' jail, I'm settin' ya'll free."
We were quite surprised and confused, the sargeant's movements were even different, when he walked, his left leg swayed a little as though he were uncoordinated or injured.
It was strange, but we had to hurry.

We all moved out of the prison quickly. We ran through the empty streets cautiously.
We kept going until we say a two-storie building with a sign that said "The Redeye", we quickly ran towards it and hid in the alley that separated it from another wooden two-storie building. Zblader looked back out to the left for a few seconds.

"Flayne, you have good vision right? come here I need you"
he said

I went towards him.

"Can you see a shed from here in the barracks at the end in the top right corner?"

I looked out and first saw the gate with two guards that were sleeping. I looked further in and saw the barracks. It was lined with soldiers on the second balcony.
Some were patrolling on the bottom.

"Yeah I see it, we have to be careful, there are some guards patrolling past it."

I watched their patrolling patterns carefully as they repeated and gave Zblader the details.

Zblader instructed,

"All right, when Flayne gives the signal, we run straight through the gate and to the shed.
He figured out the pattern of their patrolling, theres a moment where all of them will be in a certain position, looking away from the shed and our path. He calculates that we will have approximately eighteen seconds to make the hundred and half meter dash.
When he give's the signal, we all run out and follow Flayne to the shed. Run as fast as you can but don't make too much noise and do not look back. If the guards see us in the middle of the course, keep running, do not engage any of them."

They all nodded.
I watched carefully, waiting for the moment to come.

I gave the signal,
"Now!"

I bolted out of the valley and ran straight through both of the sleeping guards.
I hoped everyone was following me safely, but I didn't look back.

I ran right past the guards who were facing the opposite direction.
It seemed they couldn't hear me, which was good. I could see Condor flying overhead of me.
I kept running until I reached the shed. But the damn thing was locked.
I felt Zblader and Nepycros stop behind me.

"What's up?"
whispered Zblader

"Its locked"

"Crap"

Suddenly Nepycros came next to me.
"Let me handle it"
Suddenly, Nepycros strained his finger and touched the key hole. I saw a small dark shadow enter it, soon the door handle was covered in a dark shadow.
Suddenly I heard a click, and the door was opened. During the process everyone had arrived behind us.
We quickly went in and Nepycros shut the door softly.
I presumed he had locked it again.

"How did we do Flayne?"
whispered Zblader

"I counted, in the total process including getting in here took us almost exactly eighteen seconds, it was a close one"

We all sighed in relief.

"Nice job there Nepycros, you really saved us"

"yeah"

"It's what an assassin from my realm does"
replied Nepycros

Zblader walked towards the red carpet and lift it up. There was a trap door with a wooden handle. He opened it and we all quickly went in. He pulled the carpet over behind him and shut the trap-door firmly.

There we were, in almost pitch-black darkness.

"Damn, if only we could see..."
But EmeraldTiger stopped talking as he saw a ball of light was produced.
The ball of light was in Jorporel's hand.

"I hope this helps"
said Jorporel

"Good, because I wasn't about to hold all your hands and lead you all through the tunnel for a kilometer, since I can see in the dark"
said Nepycros

I laughed at that.

We all started walking through the dark tunnel.
I could hear drips and drops of water, and some small rocks falling.
We had a long way to go, I wondered about what happened back with the sargeant. he seemed too strange, as though he were possesed at one point and the next we was different.
I pondered on those thoughts as we walked on through the dark tunnel.

Side Story 7
Death Inside Me
A teardrop. That started the next endless nightmare I had. It landed, the splash causing a large noise that tore through the silence. The ripples changed not only the floor, but the very atmosphere, and my entire world changed right in front of me.

This time, I felt nothing. I simply saw what the dream had to offer me.

I saw Emeraldtiger, looking much more courageous, in full green battle armor and with a turquoise sword, facing what appeared to be a giant shadow three times his size. He looked brave - but the fear in his eyes was clearly growing, as if it was a nightmare from the past.

I saw Jorporel, swinging at something with a giant hammer before being consumed by a shadow with a small hint of a glow.

I saw Flayne, fighting against armored figures of stone and clay before being stabbed by an assailant that was standing next to him. Flayne clawed at his face in retaliation, and the attacker shrunk back. Flayne's wound quickly spread, and his face was gaunt, like a skeleton.

I saw Nepycros, killing and draining energy from the very shadows around him, when out of the skies behind him, a black-winged figure bore down and stabbed him with his own Memento. Her pitch-black hair furled in the wind as she surveyed the carnage around her.

As the madness of the dream spread, I sighed in relief, for my only respite from this chaos, was that I saw Lyra floating next to me a moment later.

"What is this?" I demanded. The nightmares had gotten worse ever since Lyra had joined with my mind.

She shrugged indifferently, and suddenly I saw her standing in what appeared to be a castle room, looking much younger. She was playing with  two others, but I could not see their faces. I wondered whether she kept their faces hidden on purpose, or she couldn't see them either. Then, the scene shifted, the scenery remaining the same castle room, but the two friends and their belongings were gone, yet she remained, listening to someone standing out in the corridor out of the room and reading a letter... I tried looking at the letter, but I was drawn to her face, witnessing her eyes become stone cold. Whoever seemed to be talking to her suddenly went silent, and the door closed quickly.

Another droplet, another ripple in my reality, and I then began to see figures I did not recognize, in a place that I felt I could never be able to comprehend.

I saw a strange man with wings that slowly turned black and white in intervals. When white, it adopted the soft feathers that I recognized belonged to those of the Light Realm. When the hue faded to ebony, the feathers dissolved, revealing a leathery layer of skin stretching across bones, as a dragon's wings are. He flew across a cemetery with upraised skeletal arms, then a desert, now holding someone, who in turn held someone else with an unbalanced grip, avoiding what seemed to be yellow bolts; his face was strained and his entire body was tense, as though he were doing everything he could to hold back fighting, while trying to get the person he was carrying to a safe place. When it seemed he could make it, I saw him get hit by one of the bolts and plummet towards the ground, as a female's scream -which I believed was the cry of the person he carried- echoed in the distance. The scream itself forced a new ripple, and I braced for another tragedy.

Now, I saw a burnt, bruised, and hardened Fire Elemental, fighting alongside a Water female with pink hair and a massive armored figure with a launcher weapon fighting a dragon with two heads. The dragon flared chain lightning vigorously at the three, and the Water elemental desperately blocking a bolt of electricty meant for the Fire one's life. She collapsed, her midsection giving off a lazy trail of smoke, and I turned away from the gruesome sight. When I dared look back, my vision was shifting again, but not before I saw the armored figure, his face grim, with the Fire elemental screaming his response, yet not a sound came to my ears.

I saw the impossible: a walking tree and a Gravity soldier clutching a dried wound walking within a forest. The Gravity soldier seemed to annoy the tree, incessently bursting with the repeated words of a child, yet as he opened his mouth to speak again their bodies were pierced by two spindles of darkness, and they both fell to the ground, a massive spire of obsidian in the distance. A blue figure perched on the topmost branch of a tree a secure distance away, as a dark figure stepped out the shadows in the opposite direction, jagged sword in hand, poised to finish the lives of the two victims, if by chance, they were still alive. The Gravity soldier's settled shadow suddenly rose, changing shape to a female's form, her mouth open into a desperate scream of a name, trying to rouse the soldier's limp form. The dark figure raised  his sword, blade pointing down, prepared to skewer the soldier straight through the heart, and the scenery shifted once more as that scream echoed -yet never quite reached me- throughout the forest.

This time, I observed a girl that looked surprisingly familiar to me, sprinting while pulling along what I saw to be a pale ghost of a boy in her arms, along the grassy shore of a lake. She turned around, only to find that he was long gone. She snarled in frustration, and then in pure pain, discovering that an arrow had been pierced her lower right leg. She howled to the clouds above that slowly darkened the sky. Instantly, rain began to pour, sundering the ground into mud. She stood possesed at first, staring at the overflowing lake, face as passive as a layer of snow, and suddenly, her eyes snapped upward, gazing with such intensity as that seemed to see me. She shook her head in slow disbelief, but the  boy reappeared in front of her  and fired a shockwave right in  my direction.  I blocked, but it passed right through me, and the swirling waters darkened to form a female figure with many long appendages that I had  seen from a nightmare before... the  chessboard pattern. I remember now.  The time I had been running  from figures I could not flee from -  the same lake surrounded by the forest, Lyra   drawing her  arm back as  she  played that lovely  melody. But that  dream  was no more,  and I  continued  to witness the boy fire shockwaves at  whatever he was fightning while  the girl  kneeled in  pain clutching her leg.

I then saw myself. I was running, slicing a group of figure opposed me across the clear field in the neverending torrent of rain, in a field of yellowed grass where neither the sun nor the moon shone.   But as  the new battlefield came into focus, I realized that my eyes were burning dark with power and the ones I had slaughtered were my comrades and those I had seen in the dream. They were all  sprawled  on  the ground in   grosteque  positions, each bleeding in a different place.
Some were dead. Some were still breathing.

Only Nepycros and Lyra were still standing. They both charged, only to be met by me as I disappeared and quickly reappeared, grasping their throats.
Nepycros was thrown against a tree, and I slashed him multiple times. As I stood  over his corpse, it condensed, becoming smaller and smaller.  I crushed this shrinking shadow, and turned to Lyra, whose hands  were shaking and  her eyes bloodshot. She ran at me, but tripped,  and I   took   this  opportunity to stab her. She gasped, "Bla-" and  crumpled, her   last  movement being a desperate attempt to hit me. I  responded   by   grabbing  her arm and forcing it to the ground.
The dream me turned to me, and began to speak.

"Those who are above me deserve to be eliminated."

"And why do you tell me this?" I responded.

"Because you're at the bottom of them all. You seem to have a Destiny, but you're the failiure. You could have led the journey, taken the head, but  no, you're just an ordinary hero, getting pushed around by others and  brooding over your dead past." He began to change, becoming a man with blue wings and talon-like hands. "Listen to me. If you're to become  important, seize your fate."

"DON'T SCREW WITH ME, YOU JERK!" I yelled, and ran at him, unsheathing my sword. He flew over me, and quickly punched me a few times, sending me sprawling onto the ground. I got up again, and threw my sword at him while running, hoping to gain some ground, but he responded by opening his winds and firing a barrage of dagger-sharp feathers. Remembering    something... that girl, I quickly spun my sword in a circle, somehow managing to deflect all the feathers, but they cleared to reveal him standing right in front of me, and he fired a shockwave to my chest. Trembling from the intensity of the attack, I rolled towards him and fired two low kicks at his stomach. I followed up with a swing...
...and my eyes widened in horror as he grabbed my blade by the sharpened edge and pulled it straight out of my hands. This was following up with a powerful shockwave launched from my sword into me again, and I struggled up to see him raise his right hand, a smirk of victory on  his  face.

He launched a final tornado at me, and I woke in a cold sweat. Was he telling me that I was still a failiure? That I hadn't learned anything, from these new people I had met?
And yet... I felt that wasn't what he was trying to tell me. It almost felt like "You will always be on the bottom, unnoticed, no matter what you do."

Suddenly, a blue feather drifted into my hand, and I looked up to see a shadow pass the moon for 1 second.
