So there is a thing about gmail protection... is this mandatory? I imagine some do not have a gmail account, whereas I will keep mine private. Requiring to have a gmail and be willing to share it was never a part of previous wars. I DO still need access to the vault, however. Are we expected to make a new one just for this?

I'm pretty sure Google drive can share files with any email service, not just Gmail. If not then you'll need to have your vault set to "anyone with a link can access" and just trust your teammates not to share it.

Even so, the bulk of torb's point remains-- do those of us who wish to keep our emails semi-private need to create new junk emails just for this?

Are junk e-mails really that big of a deal? Compared to having people know half your secrets? If your real e-mail was mandatory then I'd agree with you (as that would do quite the opposite).
E-mail protection should not be mandatory, but highly encouraged (and I took Zawadx post as to be meant as encouragement, not a command).
Admittedly I might be biased, as I was one of the ones that asked for e-mail-protection for his team (i made sure 3 of us agreed and noone objected and fortunately the 4th one saw no issues either making an account for this purpose).

Not everybody's tech savvy.

For you, me, and the majority, even, it might be a really simple idea to make one, or we might already have multiple emails, or we may not care about our own privacy enough to bother--  but we shouldn't expect it to be mandatory or trifling for everybody to create a second email solely for a forum event, even if that event is war.

Then I guess the title is a bit misleading. I mean, one expects gmail protection to require gmail, no?
Otherwise it's just email protection.
