Deckbuilding 101: From Noob to Platinum Slayer http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=49513.msg1074684#msg1074684

This tutorial is a remake of the original one created by jmizzle7 in 2009.

Building Your First Deck
Hey there! If you are a new player in need of some deck building advice or a frustrated player looking for improvement, look no further. I will show you how to transform a starter deck into a solid Level 3 and PvP killer of every element so you can build a deck to take on the False Gods.

Choose your element:

Your goal should be to make the most reliable deck for the least amount of electrum in the least amount of time. Mono decks (decks that contain cards of only 1 element) are the best for new players to get into the game, as they are the easiest to play with. As you play, you will get into many other strategies that involve cards of different elements.

This tutorial will lead you to your first reliable Level 3 and PvP grinder of each element, so then you can try other strategies and go grinding in Arena, Half Bloods and False Gods.

Between all the starter decks, the Darkness one is sold much higher than the others. That offers the possibility to make mono deck of every element faster and easier starting with Darkness than starting with each respective element.

That's why we are going to start with the Darkness starter deck and make a deck of any element we want starting from that one.

Spoiler for Our starter deck:

Spoiler for Comments and how to build it:
This is one of the most efficient builds you can make in the Aether element for farming Half Bloods and PvP. Here's the strategy and the fastest way to build it.

Strategy
Play your creatures whenever you can, play your shields when things get scary. The shields will provide you up to 18 turns without being damaged!
How to build it
First of all, start selling the cards that don't belong to the desired deck, until you get this deck:

Spoiler for suggested order:
Sell the Black Dragon, Devourers, parasites, Dusk Mantle and Nightfall in order to buy 13 Aether pillars, 1 Dimensional Shield and 4 Immortals. Add those to your deck.
Sell your Spark, Lightning, Parallel Universe, Drain Lives, Steals, Dagger and 8 Obsidian pillars to buy 3 Dimensional Shields and 2 Phase Dragons.

While getting your quest rewards and playing against the different AI Levels, you will gain enough  :electrum to buy the remaining cards.

That's it! You now have a deck that is fun to use and can grind Half Bloods and PvP quite effectively. Your next step should be to gain electrum towards building a deck to beat the Arena Levels and False Gods. Have fun, and good luck!

Spoiler for Comments and how to build it:
This is one of the most efficient builds you can make in the Air element for farming Level 3 and PvP. Here's the strategy and the fastest way to build it.

Strategy
The strategy is simple: Play the dragons as soon as you can. If you think your opponent has Steals or Deflagrations, save the Unstable Gasses and play them all together in the end of the game to have a chance of letting him waste them in your pillars.
If your opponent has healing, play the UGs but ignite them all together in the end of the game for a final big hit.
How to build it
As soon as you start, start selling and buying cards until you get this deck:

Spoiler for suggested order:
Sell your Black Dragon, Devourers, Parasites, Dusk Mantle and Nightfall, in order to buy 18 Air pillars and 5 Unstable Gas. Add those to your deck.
Sell all your Aether cards and all the remaining Darkness cards except 3 Obsidian Pillars (your deck should have 30 cards by now), and buy 1 Unstable Gas and 3 Azure Dragons.
Replace them for your last 3 Obsidian Pillars and Dagger, and you are done.

Devourers are super effective (and annoying for your opponent) when they are played early, Drain Life works to kill dangerous creatures or just to hit your opponent while healing. The later you play them, the better! Use steals for good shields or another permanents useful for your opponent.

How to build it

Finally, a needed recent tutorial. Though, i wonder if there's no other guide deserving a place instead of a remake.

Finally, a needed recent tutorial. Though, i wonder if there's no other guide deserving a place instead of a remake.
Like yours? I think for yours to be added it would now have to link this. I've been linking to your tutorial since I read it. :)

I just realized the synergy between Graboids/Shrieker and Nightmare and noticed that this deck is really cheap, so I thought it could be a good starter deck:
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
58o 58o 58o 58o 58o 58o 58o 58o 58o 590 590 590 590 590 590 5rk 5rk 5rk 5rk 5rk 5v1 5v1 5v1 5v1 5v1 606 606 606 606 606 8ps

Price:776 :electrum
Strategy: Get your graboids out as fast as possible and evolve them as soon as possible. Once you have evolved 1 graboid nightmare the resulting Shrieker; your opponent has now a lot of high cost creatures on his hand he definitly wont be able to play, doesnt draw a card for one turn + you drain his life. Every creature the opponnent managed to get out can be targeted with reverse time.

why would you even put :darkness in... there are only uses for nightmare and you would be better off using other cards from :time :earth and removing :darkness altogether. I would suggest removing the 10 darkness cards and replacing them with 5 time pends and possibly some wardens or plate armor, depending on if you want to further delay your opponent from damaging you or protecting your graboids so they don't die from CC
I'm not really back.

I haven't tried it but it looks like a good deck.
Shriekers are vulnerable to CC, so hindering your opponent to draw cards is a nice protection without having to burrow your shriekers. Additionally, it prevents your opponent from drawing shields and the reverse time get rid of otyughs or slows down rush decks (especially cremations) very efficiently.

The nightmares are the 2nd most important part of this deck; your opponent is usually forced to stick with his first ~10 cards. Your suggestions allow only either of the following things: Stop the creatures the opponent has played from attacking or protect your creatures from cc spells, while this deck does both by simple not allowing to draw them.

Have you heard of the pretty little deck Nightmares of the Past? It uses the synergy of Nightmare/Ghost of the Past and it works much more effectively than Shrieker/Nightmare because of the Ghost of the Past's ability.

Your "How to build it" is rather weak and isn't any good. "Sell and buy cards until you get at this deck" -- Find the optimal way. Some combination of sold cards + bought ones can make it so you can get the deck before a single fight.
