Afdarenty and Physsion will henceforth act as only TrOs for The Trials of Aether. In case of a ruling covering two TrOs, it is settled by the third. In case of a ruling covering all TrOs, it is settled by the admins. If you have any issues regarding fairness, please contact the TrOs or the Admins IMMEDIATELY.

Theme

So when I started to design this card, I knew I'd have to fill up a huge thematic gap in Aether. I mean, immortality was pretty much one of aether's core concepts - beings so distant from normal realms that our spells couldn't touch them. So I decided I'd try to expand on one of aether's other themes. The two which came to mind were mindgate's ability, and 0 HP creatures. Mindgate's ability proved too hard to build off of, requiring something as revolutionary as a shard (at least, something whose power level wouldn't fit into the alchemy slot), so I decided to go for 0 HP creatures.

So you have Evanescence - a spell that employs the same wonder of self-similarity that creates replicas in Parallel Universe and Fractal. But here the caster uses significantly less quanta, and thus the creature only leaves a faint imprint on our reality. Even as it attacks it starts to fade, until it disappears completely. Works, right?

Balance

Evanescence is not that strong in-element, due to the fact that Aether doesn't have a targetable dragon. Phase Recluse can be a decent target, but 7|11 damage for 2 quanta isn't that great when it isn't refundable. It might serve a niche in Aether Rush fully upped, which would make an interesting spot for aether in the upped meta.

The main place for Evanescence to shine will be off-element. It has a clear combo with HP buffs, such as blessing, plate armor and chaos power. Of course you can't really capitalize on doubling these buffs as you must buff the copy, not the original - this balances out the power in buff decks.

One surprising application of Evanescence is in OTKs. Until now, most OTKs used at least 2 copies of PUs and thus needed to generate Aether with mark/pillars. This meant that OTKs would often treat aether as a main element, putting in dims as well - making it hard to add in other main elements beside time for drawpower. With Evanescence, you can replace PUs with a much cheaper card, thus removing aether as a main element in a rainbow OTK. This can open up new ways to build OTK decks, perhaps utilizing other elements in interesting ways. You might even see the development of hybrid OTKs with new playstyles. At the very least, it would increase the viability of unupped OTKs and let them build fast versions capable of competing in unupped metas. Something like this:

Spoiler for Hidden:
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
4vc 4vc 50u 50u 50u 50u 55q 5f2 5op 5rp 5rp 5rp 5rp 5rp 5rp 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 61r 61r 61r 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 8ps

Can easily manage 10 TTK, allowing for it function as a viable break to stalls in unupped/6 up metas without the usual mix of fire bolt/fractal.

Effect on War

Losing quintessence will not really effect Aether in War. Ever since Fractal has become prominent as aether's prime card, the use of single-target CC vs aether has significantly reduced. So using Quintessence means slowing down your deck for protection against an uncommon card type, which is only going to get punished by the usual denial decks/rushes which aether faces. The only effect losing quintessence would have on Aether is completely removing the viability of Shard of Wisdom, but since that was too expensive to use anyways it will have no consequences.

Gaining Evanescence wouldn't be a huge boon for Aether, which is a good thing since Aether doesn't need another big boost when it comes to War. Evanescence might come in handy to give Aether's rushes a bit more punch, which might give them a chance to power through some of the dark domins which have cropped up as a counter to Aether. Evanescence also opens the possibility of OTK decks for Aether, which aren't essential as Fractal can decimate stalls by itself, but might be used to reliably counter some of the peskier stalls like Air's sancstall.

Challenge accepted, I say. Challenge accepted...

I don't think I need to point out how I meet requirements, but I made a spoiler just in case.
Spoiler for You doubt me still? Such insolence, very well: I shall meet your "requirements":
Not everyone can join the Trials. There are some minimum requirements to ensure that the person is serious about becoming a Master.
  • ALL from:
    • Winning a Weekly Tournament: 11 icons, so done x11
    • A top 3 finish in either of the PVP Leagues: icon shows I did that once!
    • A top 3 finish in a PVP event: Even if tpvp win doesn't count, there's doubles, finishing third.
    • Finishing on 1 of the top 3 War teams: war #4 Darkness ended third, I was general and Master to boot.
    • Becoming a Master of any Element: x3, see icons
  • AND ALL of the following:
    • 30,000+ score in Elements I'd say this is adequate:
    • 100+ forum posts Does 3000+ count, too?
    • Joined the forums no less than 3 months ago (at the time of signing up) What about 7 years?
    • Participation in at least three separate PVP Events (Leagues, War, Weekly Tournaments, etc.) Considering I won more than 3 awards for them, I think it's fair to say I participated in more than 3, too.
To complete this wall of ego, it's time to finish it with an overview of Mark cards:

Spoiler for article:
Weekly tournaments: some tips for deckbuilding

Some people seem to think tournaments are an elite occasion where only the best of the best fight each other. Although it's true that being experienced at tournaments makes you better and faster at building decks, a bit of extra preparation can make up the difference in deckbuilding. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Always prepare several decks: even if you think the meta is broken and one deck is clearly more powerful than the rest, it does not hurt preparing a few spare decks in case someone proves you wrong.
  • Do not use only one deck when you have other viable options: especially when you are new, some people will actively expect you not to switch decks and bring a counter. You may even be able to use this to your advantage by trying to counter decks that would counter yours.
  • Try to have a counter prepared to each of your own decks: rock, paper, scissors style. No matter what your opponent may bring, even if you fail at predicting it, you should at the very least have had a deck capable of defeating it. This is something that even veterans may have trouble with depending on how well they can guess the meta of the tournament.
So I kept saying "meta" like that's supposed to explain everything, so let's focus a bit on that. Every tournament will favor specific kinds of decks: every, single, one. Even one with no restrictions. In fact, cards that are banned often have a tendency of being overused in tournaments in which they are not: indeed, looking at which cards are often banned, but not during this tournament, is a good inspiration for strong cards.

In general, it's better to understand the full implications of a rule and how it affects the decks you will see during a tournament, for example all decks need to be rainbows. This means that effective dual element cards like Lycanthrope and Graboid become very attractive to use, as well as cheap effective cards from other elements like Lightning, Vampire Stiletto and Fog Shield. Cards like Black Hole and Amber Nymph will also change from mediocre to downright overpowered for being able to shut down entire rainbow decks. Usually, this means the Tournament Organizers will ban this card, especially in an extreme case like this, but there is always a borderline case.

Finally, a few tips to help you build decks successful at pvp: decks that grind false gods generally do not fare as well versus someone with a pair of genuine brains. Use redundant copies, a beginners error you see often is adding only one of a card to a deck, because you only use one. But you need to actually draw it, before you can use it! Some decks use four copies in a thirty card deck, even when they can use only one copy at a time (weapons, some shields). When your opponent decides to use permanent control, these extra copies won't be just sitting in your hand, either.

Spoiler for Requirements:
-Pretty sure y'all know I meet the requirements

Spoiler for Phase 1:
Spoiler for Task 1:
-Task 2: The Fresh Reruits
Spoiler for alchemy card:

Spoiler for nymph:
Balance
Quint is one of the least used alchemy cards and Aether nymph is one of the least used nymphs, so this task is perfect for aether. My new alchemy card is a permanent (like UG), and it addresses aether's (and many other elements) lack of PC. The phase mine adds a new mechanic to elements PC in that it is a delayed PC card that can act in one of 2 ways:

1. Phase mine can be placed in an open permanent slot. If a permanent is placed where a phase mine is already located, it is immediately destroyed. For example, if phase mine is placed on the weapon slot, and your opponent plays a Vagger, it is destroyed before it is able to hit.
2. Phase mine can be placed in a used permanent slot. If a permanent is already in play when a phase mine is placed, the permanent will be destroyed at the END of your opponents next turn. For example, if phase mine is placed on the weapon slot and Vagger is already in play, then the Vagger will be allowed to hit before being destroyed during your opponent's next turn.

Because the PC is delayed, the cost should be cheaper than deflag, thus 2/1. Mines are stackable and 1 permanent will only trigger 1 mine. This card should complement the existing PC already in EtG. Deflags and Steals will likely still be the preferred PC for most. This will be due to the fact that playing mines pre-emptively will make your opponent use his quanta elsewhere and potentially waste your own quanta. The delayed destruction of a permanent in play will still be useful at the reduced cost compared to deflag.

In terms of affecting the meta in PVP, this would likely become a staple in grabbows in conjunction with deflags due to the cheaper cost. Aether duos while already strong for most elements would make it more viable and versatile for those that are less often used. This would also help with balancing the epidemic of certain shards in PVP.

As for the nymph, a creature with renewable PC can be huge. As a result, I flipped the attack and HP to make it a bit tankier like most other nymphs. It's entirely possible that this could be an OP nymph purely based on the mine skill, which may require modifcation of the attack/HP stats.

Effect on War
1. War without quint or aether nymph - essentially unchanged. I have never built a vault with aether nymph, but I think I used quinted purple nymphs once.

2. War with Phase Mine and new aether nymph - gives aether a fighting chance against shards. Monoair SoFree is virtually unbeatable for aether, which is one of the many reasons I am adamantly against unrestricted shards in war until the game is more balanced. Phase mine will help balance the effect of shards for aether making it capable of winning war again.

Spoiler for Task 2:
-Task 1: The warrior
-too busy to do the other tasks at this time

Spoiler for War Bonus:
-Generaled aether last war, not sure where we finished, obviously wasn't great. Stupid F'ing shards

Spoiler for Brawl Bonus:
