if we defeat an opponent, we gain their element affinity. Does this mean that we still can't use the restricted card for that element? So, it's only that using that element will also count towards 1/3 of element affinity? Also, to be clear, we can use cards from other elements and "other" regardless, right?

You can use the restricted card if you have the affinity, only the starter bonus doesn't get transferred. You can use other elements and 'Other' cards, just not the restricted/banned cards from the elements you don't have an affinity with.

Question: If you beat someone who only has affinities you already have, do you get any real bonus or you only get rid of one opponent?

1) If the challenged person does not respond until 36 hours, will their first challenger get their upgrades and element bonuses?
2) Let's say that Challenger A challenged Challenger B, but then Challenger C challenged Challenger A. (A-->B, C-->A) If Challenger A accepts Challenger C's challenge, will Challenger A's challenge towards Challenger B be voided? Also what else should we know about similar situations?

The first would count as a 'decline' any after would result in a disqualification of the player. No one would get their benefit.
