[Poll] The worst deck (aka the most uninspired and annoying) to be seen. https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=37408.msg470027#msg470027
« on: March 12, 2012, 08:45:11 am »
The purpose of this poll to gather opinions and shows newer players how unwelcome certain decks are in Arena.

As a bronze league farmer (I know BL sucks), I've been seeing more and more new players building identical Arena deck, and most of the time, it's Aether Stall. Worse still, some aren't really Aether Stall, they are just a chain of Dimensional Shield and some crappy combination of cards.

It is painful to see those identical decks in a row. Not only does the shield chain wastes your time, trying to build a deck to counter Aether Stall also means losing your competitiveness against other non-Aether decks.

Probably it's my problem. Probably everyone is fine with all those copy-and-paste, zero creativity decks. I just want to see which deck is the most annoying and uninspired in other people's mind.

And, hopefully, if some new players walk by and see this, they will not try to pact 6 dimensional shields and 6 sundials into a deck and then think proudly they have built a really good deck.

Edit :

5 Aether Stall in a row, ARE YOU KIDDING!!

The sixth deck, MIRACLE SPAM + DIMENSIONAL SHIELD CHAIN

Am I the only one not building mono-aether here ?

You think that's bad? Wait until you enter higher leagues with 12 SoSacs in every deck... I would be ecstatic if every deck had 12 Dim Shields and/or Sun Dials.

If something is overdone, don't complain about it- abuse it by building a counter that crushes them over and over until they learn their lesson and stop/lessen the overused mechanic. Mono-aether counters do not have to fail against other decks.

Had to go with Oraclebows - while Ghostmare and Aether Stall are annoying, at least I can accept it if your card was Dim Shield, Phase Dragon, Nightmare etc. But getting a nymph or dragon and making a rainbow... something inside of me just snaps :P There is no excuse for ignoring your oracle card.

For me, the most annoying ones are immorush/speedbow and anything with shard of sacrifice.  Any retard can make an immorush that does well; I remember having one that went 60-0 before it lost a game :p  Speedbows, while in theory should have a lot of variation, in practice don't; there will be maybe 2-3 cards that vary, and the rest are completely predictable.  There will be the black holes, the graboids, one each of all of the 4-5 cost creatures like lava destroyer, abyss crawler, gargoyle, phase spider, etc.  And shard of sacrifice annoys me because it takes forever to wait out twelve of them :p

Ghostmare is kind of annoying, but there are two pretty good counters to it in the form of sanctuary and time quanta to play ghosts.
Firestall isn't really that good, and I usually beat it when it comes up in the arena.  I still don't know why people rant about this one.
Oraclebow: I think is really fun to play against.  Many of my most enjoyable games were epic 30-40 turn games against oraclebows.  These games sometimes take even longer than SoSa games, but at least I'm having fun because stuff is happening, rather than me just pressing spacebar against sosacs until they run out.
Immorush: I already mentioned this one, and voted for it (though I'd have voted for speedbow if it were on the list instead)
Poison Stall: This one bugs me, but after putting two purify in my arena deck, things have gotten better :D
Monoaether: Never had a problem with this one.  Dimshields bend over to PC, especially pulverizer or even butterfly effect, and phase dragons bend over to gravity shield; if you have those two cards in play, you can beat nearly all monoaether decks.  The ones with elite immortal are actually harder to beat because they're faster and get around gravity shield :p
Shard of Sacrifice: Ugh.  Most overpowered card in the game right now.  If you can control the game, you can just wait them out, but often they win via poison, and that's harder to counter, as you need either purify or massive amounts of healing.

I'm going to be the token voice of dissent here:

If you are not a highly creative deck builder - and many people are not, or choose not to expend the energy on any given day - it is entirely to your benefit and smart to build an obvious staple deck. The system as it stands dramatically favors this conduct, and it's shown in natural player habit trends. If you're hating what lots and lots of players are doing, it's not the players who have the problem. (It's also not you, to be clear: stagnation in deck design benefits no one.) The problem is the system itself - it encourages stagnation.

I could build a creative experiment that might go 3w/2L and out...it might also go 35W/0L, but realistically, the true "power decks" are well-known, and I'm not going to discover the next through an epiphany...

...or I could build an obvious power deck and go 35w/3L and retire it on day 6.

One version gets me, at best, 30 gold in my current league. The other guarantees me 165, and since some people still appreciate and rate up those decks, I can pocket 200. If you're playing on a daily basis, that's meaningless. If you're stuck with very little time due to real life obligations, that's significant. Much of the time, I'll go with a minor variation on the power deck theme that's at least vaguely close to what I was given by the oracle. Why? Because as a player, there is absolutely no benefit to doing otherwise.

There are also people who are aiming for the highest rank that they can get, and 3W (with 3 thumbs) versus 35 wins (with NO thumbs) will still have a very clear distinction on the higher rank. In short, cliche though it may be:

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Is there a problem? Absolutely. The problem does not lie with the players - the problem lies with the system which encourages stagnant deck design.

Take right now for example: I've got a Ghostmare deck up (Oracle was Ghost, fwiw) and it's rank 51, 18-3, 148 electrum. (How I got 148 instead of 145 or 150, I have no idea, since this is Gold league, but whatever.)

I just did my Oracle for the day, and I've been handed adrenaline. My Ghostmare is on Day 2. Now, I'm pretty sure I could build something solid with Adrenaline, but I'm not POSITIVE of it. I am positive that my Ghostmare will continue to turn in similar results for another 2-3 days. I've got a lot of other things on my mind today as well. Given these circumstances - which are hardly atypical for the vast majority of casual players...

Why would I switch out? Some aesthetic idea of "doing something nifty?" Yeah, sure, if I had a full set of upped cards and the spare time to try and come up with something nifty. I don't in either case.

So: ride on, slightly-altered-from-base-variant Ghostmare.

The system, not the players, is the root of the problem here.

SoSac is a horrible card and I hate it profoundly. There is however another card I hate more... Reverse Time... it is the most annoying card ever created for this game, I can take 12 SoSac in a row np, but those damned Reverse times I hate. Whenever I run into a Reverse Time deck in arena it frustrates me so much even if I win that I stop playing for the day and possibly the next few days as well.

Hate the game, not the player. Elements isn't balanced and it's completely expected that players use the strategies that win. Phase shield stall is one of the very few things a bronze leaguer can build that I've ever struggled against with various farm decks. The number of them has been surprisingly low if anything.

4x SoP. It's not hard to counter SoSa, you just lose to most other decks. That being said, SoSa is still a total pain to play against.
