Players without a coherent deck (symptoms include: an unnecessarily large deck, no clear goal or synergy in card choices, severe quanta balance issues, relies on an unreliable and complicated combo, etc.) often find themselves playing AI1 and AI2 because their decks can't stand up against the more structured AI3 decks.

This phenomenon seems to be more common in Kongregate than the main site, as there are usually a few people every now and then who complain (on Kong forums, Kong chat, Kong comment box, etc.) about how AI3 is "too hard."

Others like to test their weird deck ideas out on the lower AI levels.

For the last two updates (1.26 and 1.27), when Zanz rolled out a new update, the new cards aren't in the Bazaar until a few days have passed. Farming AI1 and AI5 (possibly also AI2) allowed players to obtain the new cards before their addition to the Bazaar, as AI1 and AI5 decks are randomly generated from the card pool.

^ yeah this.
Testing decks in the trainer takes the fun out of it for me, so unless I need to vs a specific opponent, I'd rather test against the AI on my real account. Usually that means AI3 or T50, but if it's a really strange concept that I know will need a large amount of tweaking, I'll play the AI2 as a start.

As for the AI1, before I figured out how to grind efficiently, I would often spend too much electrum buying shiny new cards, and thus end up without enough to play my preferred AI match, so I would play an AI1 game to get enough electrum to play a higher level AI.

Precisely what I do.

AI1 makes sense, but AI5 is generated randomly? I thought it was just picking one of the decks at random like AI3 and T50.

I sometimes play AI2 if I'm on a streak of bad luck. It never helps my luck.
If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning, I'd hammer in the evening, unless I had a gavel.

I beat at least seven AI2s before I start fighting AI3s -- more if I lose any AI2 fights. I'm not trying to complete the quests as fast as possible, though; I'm trying to complete the quests in the same manner with each element, in order to figure out which element is best for me, and which cards are best in each element. If a deck loses often enough, I'll go back to AI1 or even AI0! In fact, I'm playing AI1 now.

The worst decks I've had so far had two extra AI0 fights, immediately followed by at least ten AI1 fights. Since this is usually caused by the deck being too big, I take out a lot of cards when it happens, and then put a few back in after each fight. I also limit myself to one less copy of each card -- if you see "restricts" in my signature, that's what it refers to.

According to Dark Weaver (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,23323.0.html), AI5 chooses a primary and secondary element (which determine its name), and takes 4 quantum pillars, 30 random cards and 20 pillars of the primary element, 10 random cards and 3 marks of the secondary element. (For example, Tersa has 20 stone pillars, 30 random earth cards, 10 random gravity cards, and 3 marks of gravity.) Each of the 64 cards has a 30% chance of being upped (so there's about a 1-in-8.198-billion chance of the deck containing no upped cards).
