War #5 - Propaganda Speech Poll

Life and Water were the only ones who had speeches in my opinion. They were very good too :>

Well, I wasn't expecting to win (credit for that goes I'm sure to glennfoo for all his efforts to convince voters) but I'm not sure where "avoid making a speech" comes from. I just chose to write a real speech to my team, instead of something more showy. How is that deemed illegitimate?

Life was the only speech, in my opinion. This makes me hate prop.

I feel so much confirmed and am even a bit surprised that some people are even more restrictive than me. The entries that I considered to be speeches were Life, Water, Time, Air and Darkness, I'd have voted for them in this order. 5 of 12. Okay, Death had a well-made comic, so I won't dispute their rank. But sadly I have to admit that I second Jenkar's opinion on War propaganda under these circumstances.

And I have no problem saying Terro gave a speech. Whether his or my speeches are good or bad is always up for debate, but they aren't "avoiding making a speech" just because they aren't poetry, or because ours got more votes than you think it should have.

That's not really the problem. Nearly same thing, 16 votes difference means it's not the speech that's voted for.

I... actually second this as well. But i think the problem is that the Warmasters approved those speech, which makes it fair game.
The definition of "speech" here have to be more restrictive.

Pretty sure you do know where it comes from. A normal speech has never won this poll. *looks back on Death's comics*
Has little to nothing to do with you, although a speech for your teammates is usually done in the secret board, while propaganda speeches are specifically supposed to be aimed at the general public.

I do know why people are upset that our speech won. I don't think that means my speech should be deemed not an actual speech. I LIKE my speech, even if it is modest. I'm not bothered by the discussion over whether it "should" have won or not, just by claims that it isn't a true speech at all.

As for the speech's target audience, I'm just working off of stuff like this from the prop rules:

This speech/poem is written by the General. Its purpose is to motivate the team, and make your enemies fear you.

You've got the logic backwards. Your speech isn't deemed a non-speech because people are upset. People are upset because their efforts have once again been in vain. Over and over this turns into a plain popularity vote and for those who have invested a lot of inspiration, it's a downer to lose to non-speeches over and over. That's opinion though; if you think your speech is a speech, that's fine. Doesn't really change anything.

It's naturally hard to define what a speech is and what isn't. To me, yours wasn't motivating at all. I desire inspiration and a splash of grandeur, and that's 100% subjective. Also some length.

I don't think even you can say your speech makes me fear you though x)

Haha well inspiring fear has never been my forte, and considering your personality I doubt anyone had much success there
Personally, I don't find the grandiose speeches motivating, since they just feel like a show and not like they're honestly addressed to me as a player. I can understand disagreement there, and I do find the other types of speeches to be fun to read, but I also prefer my approach.

Anyway, my speech's quality is a side issue at this point as you've said. The questions now revolve around how we can improve the Prop so that it better fits everyone's perceptions of how it should work, and that discussion is better carried out in feedback threads.

I don't see why this should necessarily be a bad thing. That is how things in the world roll. Elections, marketing, social life, fashion... Quality is always behind popularity. I prefer quality too but popularity is more realistic.

I didn't want you to but it would make more sense for death to win this over fire, you did fine work.  Fire's speech is far from 1st place.
