Title: A Lobotomize for Permanents
Post by: Yeelp on June 15, 2018, 04:09:32 am
I had the idea to submit a card idea that was a spell card that, when played, allowed you to target a non-stackable permanent and remove its abilities. Basically a lobotomize for permanents. Shield damage reduction would not be affected (But dim shields would be completely negated) and weapon damage wouldn't change unless the weapon gets bonus damage from an ability (Like Dagger). Non-stackable permanents are the only targets since I imagine it would be difficult to handle disabling one card in a cluster of pillars for example (Especially if I use Deflag or EQ on the stack. It then becomes a question of does the disabled pillar get destroyed, and if not, when?).

The concepts goes a little further. Say I lobotomize a Voodoo Doll. Now there's a permanent equivalent to lobotomize, so my weapon then loses its ability as a result of lobotomizing the Voodoo Doll.

So I came to the conclusion of calling the card Erode (Since the abilities of the weapon would erode away).

However, I'm not sure if such a card should be a Time, Earth or Air card.

Time makes sense since erosion occurs over a long period of time - and it would give Time some soft PC and have some duality with it's counterpart, Aether which would have a similar ability, but for creatures.

Earth makes sense since Earth is a defensive element so it works well with helping Earth reach a defensive win condition.

Air works too since erosion is caused by winds. However, the defensive nature of this card doesn't suit Air at all.

Add to that the fact that to me, the idea seems kinda vanilla and I'm not sure if I should continue the idea or leave it behind.

I'm not sure if the Voodoo Doll addition makes sense. The Erode card is a :time/ :earth/ :air card, but the lobotomization skill is mostly associated with :aether.

On the one hand, I personally believe :earth has no use for soft PC since it already has Pulverizer, while :time has no PC whatsoever. On the other hand, the card doesn't fit with :time's main gimmick (Focuses more on card advantage and faster draws).

Although, the idea itself is overshadowed by other cards. Hard PC effectively serves the same purpose of Erode but with the added bonus of completely removing the permanent. Momentum allows a creature to bypass any shield's effect and damage reduction, and Shard of Freedom gives that to airborne creatures along with increased damage and the chance to evade spells. Weapons can be frozen via Ice Bolt or Voodoo, or destroyed.

I would scrap the idea for now, but if you can find a way to make it better than the other PC cards I would make it :water. Water is also a cause of erosion, and the concept of the card fits Water's wide array of control well.

Reminds me of a card in Elements 2. Rejuvenation, spell, costs :life :life: Target permanent now heals +5 HP per turn. Removes all previous abilities.

The issue with a lobotomize for permanents is that it's more profitable to just destroy them with cheap cards like deflag, or take them for yourself with steal. The only exception is when your opponent filled their permanent slots, but that almost never happens and you've most likely lost anyway if they managed to do that.
