Overview

The games will be played in Pokemon Showdown. If you have not tried competitive Pokemon before, I recommend playing a few [Gen 7] Random Battles to get a feel of the possible strategies. In the game chat, you can type "/weak <pokemon>" or "/weak <type>" to quickly find out what is effective against a target. (<Pokemon> and <type> are variables. Replace them with actual data.)

• Starting a command with "/" will make the output visible only to you.
  Starting a command with "!" will make the output visible to anyone.
• If you hover your mouse over a pokemon's sprite in battle, additional details show up.
• You can type "/data <anything>" or "/dt <anything>" in chat to see more details about a pokemon, an ability, or a move.
• You can type "/calc" in chat to quickly generate a link to the Damage Calculator.
  It is not discussed here how to use the damage calculator.

Tournament Groups

The Starter Division is for people who are new to competitive pokemon.
The Competitive Division is for people who can make competitive teams on their own.

Both Divisions start by bidding for a type. For how bidding works, see the Bids section. After the bids are complete, each player is given a Type.
After players have a Type, they have to choose a Mascot pokemon within their Type. The Mascot pokemon must be in all teams (but moves, stats and items can be changed).
The chosen Type and Mascot will be publicized at the same, to avoid counterpicking.

Note: Non-mega and mega Mascots count to be the same.

Bids

Players must send their bids in a PM in the following way:

• Type 1: <type/types>
• Type 2: <type/types>
• Type 3: <type/types>
• Type 4: <type/types>
• ...

Add all existing types to your list. Multiple types can be added to the same row. Type 1 is the favorite type, then it decreases in popularity as the list goes on.

If only one player listed a type as their favorite, they will get that type. After a type is picked for one player, others cannot get that type.
If multiple people have the same type preference on the top, they skip to the next type level. This continues until a type can be associated to players.
If the favorite type has multiple options, and none of the options are bidded on by another player, a type is randomly chosen.
In case multiple players cannot get types because their bidding order is too similar, the involved players will do a preliminary [Gen 7] 1v1 Best of Three match to determine who gets the type. For this, brackets might vary depending on the number of conflicting players. The preliminary 1v1 match has no restrictions.

After the bids are complete, players will be privately notified of their Type. Then players must reply as soon as possible about what Mascot they want within that Type. (Mega Mascots can be used, but send in the non-mega name of your Mascot.) If a player does not choose a Mascot within a reasonable time, I will give the worst possible Mascot to them.

Starter Division

Players in the Starter Division will play in [Gen 7] 1v1 format. This allows quick teambuilding, quick games, a quick understanding of favorable matchups and a glimpse of possible strategies from the opponent. The rules for Starter Division teams are as follows:

• The Mascot pokemon must be in the team.
• The other two pokemon in the team can be anything. The bids only determine the type of your Mascot.
• Matches will be Best of 5. Teams can be changed between games.

Players in the Starter Division have 2 lives. Anyone can be challenged at any time, even the same person twice in a row. This will help a bit with timezones. If someone loses all lives, they are out of the game. Challenges can be declined, but please don't avoid challenges of stronger players. One challenge must be accepted as soon as possible, to keep the tournament flowing.

Competitive Division

Players in the Competitive Division will play in [Gen 7] UU format. We will use Smogon's tier list to determine what belongs to tiers.

The teambuilding rules are the following:

• All teams must have 3-5 pokemon of their chosen Type, including the Mascot pokemon.
• If your opponent's Type is super effective against yours OR resists yours, you must include 3 or more pokemon of your Type.
• If your Type is super effective against your opponent's Type, you must include 5 or more pokemon of your Type.
• In any other case, you must include 4 or more pokemon of your Type.
• Matches will be Best of 3. Teams can be changed between games.

Players in the Competitive Division have 2 lives. Anyone can be challenged at any time, even the same person twice in a row. This will help a bit with timezones. Comments

The bidding method is to ensure variety and fairness. If we let multiple people choose the same Type, there will be little variety. If we have a first-come-first-serve system, there will be little fairness.

Because of the elimination type, there is no second and third place. There will only be a first place.

I am open for rule changes, so share your suggestions if you have any.

What's the choice of making it UU restricted? Is there a chance of making in-element Pokemon be able to be OU? Or at least your mascot

The previous two games used OU too, so it was a good time to switch it up. I also think OU makes the player bring specific pokemon for a few types (For example, if you get Ground, it makes no sense not to bring Landorus-T), which then makes the meta revolve around those specific mons. This trend seems less true for UU, and it also feels like a more fun, but equally competitive metagame in general.

I feel like if you can bring an OU threat to super effective matches, it is an easy setup for a sweep, however it might be counteracted by others knowing about your mascot. I am mostly trying to weed out the disadvantages, but if you bring up some advantages for OU teams or more people want to open up to OU, we can have this change, sure.

I think I'm just biased since I've always greatly preferred OU, and the options that it can bring, but I agree that it could polarise the meta a bit. Meet in the middle and allow BL mons~?
