Title: Heroes of Might and Magic III
Post by: iancudorinmarian on February 12, 2019, 02:00:52 pm
Apparently, this works on android phones now. Which is freaking awesome!

https://www.reddit.com/r/HoMM/comments/7jgikv/is_it_possible_to_play_homm_iii_on_an_android/

If any of you don't have it installed on pc and want to try it on mobile, let me know and I'll pack the data, maps and mp3 folders into an archive and share it.

I'm unsure if mods like WoG or HotA work nor if it works on iOS.

EDIT: Here are the needed files: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Q2DLuBP3uAFlKz3JLczI9kUclg77K2tR

Extract with 7zip if winrar gives "unrecognized or corrupted file" or something similar.

Dungeon is my jam.
Dungeon is pretty cool, especially if you can abuse summoning portal.

Yes, Summoning Portal is amazing, especially if you get it on Medusas or Evil Eyes.

Would you be interested in playing some PvP sometime, Link? Or even as a team vs AI team.

I don't claim to be any good, but I'd be down to play some coop. Submachine and I were planning to play a while back, but I didn't figure out how to get the online multiplayer to work.

For anyone else interested in multiplayer, you need these:

HOMM3 complete: https://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition
GameRanger: https://www.gameranger.com/
HD mod: https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/eng/download
Do this: https://www.reddit.com/r/HoMM/comments/3zybvx/playing_heroes_3_with_hd_mod_or_hota_on_gameranger/

Note: When creating the hd exe, make sure the "HD+" checkbox is NOT ticked.

I think we tried it on GameRanger, but we had different versions of the game.

I will look into this too when I'll have some breathing time. ^^"

Just looked this game up. It seems earily similar to Age of Wonders II. Is it similar?

Here is AoW2 https://store.steampowered.com/app/61510/Age_of_Wonders_II_The_Wizards_Throne/

If so, i am deeply interested in playing this

Both are fantasy TBS. From the AoW series the 1st is so better than the 2nd. Felt the 2nd was pretty much simplified (the combat).

Try HOMM3, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. No wonder it's a classic.

Both HOMM3 and HOMM5 seem to be on sale atm on gog:

https://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition
https://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_5_bundle

Might be worth spending a few dollars, you get a ton of content for such a low price.

After playing on and off for the past few months, I've finally managed to complete the SoD campaign. Some missions were really frustrating, but overall it was pretty fun.

I think that's the only campaign I never obtained. Do you play custom maps? I enjoyed the Pride maps (Angelic, Devilish and Titanic Pride).

(Meanwhile I really wanted to find a specific map set, just to find out they were Heroes 2 maps... really brutal and story-rich maps made by Corribus.)

I played a few, not those you mentioned though. My favourite one is All for One, just because it's the map I played as a kid. I've also played a few Island maps, since the random map generator is terrible at making them.

Ah, this is a stock map, there are really good ones, I loved Titan's Winter, for example. For a good old quick multiplayer game Manifest Destiny is the best! :D
The map I mentioned is user-made. They are pretty much challenging, sometimes even sadistic. :D You can find a lot at Celestial Heavens (https://www.celestialheavens.com/homam-iii).

I would like to learn more about the in-depth strategies in Heroes III. Here is one thing I learned through in-game experimentation.

Few = 1-4
Several = 5-9
Pack = 10-19
Lots = 20-49
Horde = 50-99
Throng = 100-249
Swarm = 250-499
Zounds = 500-999
Legion = 1000-4000 (4000 is MAX)

What do you need help with? Map exploring? Battle? Building?

What's your favourite faction?

Btw, you can find pretty much anything regarding general mechanic explanations here: http://heroes.thelazy.net/wiki/

I am mostly interested in troop sizes required to take down another troop. For example, can I calculate how many Gargoyles I need to take down 76 Elite Griffins?

Gargoyles are pretty meh, so probably like a thousand :silly:

Can't really help with that. It's very situational and you get to learn it with experience. You also need less and less troops the better you learn to play.

If you want to know the math behind damage calculation: heroes.thelazy.net/wiki/Damage

Simple version:

if atk > def, damage = stack_size * rand(min_dmg, max_dmg) * (1 + 0.05 * (atk - def))
if def < atk, damage = stack_size * rand(min_dmg, max_dmg) / (1 + 0.05 * (def - atk))

stack_size is the number of creatures in the attacking creature's stack
rand(x, y) is a random integer >= x and <=y

I am mostly interested in troop sizes required to take down another troop. For example, can I calculate how many Gargoyles I need to take down 76 Elite Griffins?
Total griffin hp = 25 * 76 = 1900
atk (gargoyle) = 6
def (griffin) = 9

def > atk, so we use the second formula (to have 100% chance to kill all griffins in one hit, we're using the minimum damage for gargoyle, which is 2)
stack_size * 2 / (1 + 0.05 * (9 - 6)) = stack_size * 2 / 1.15 ~= stack_size * 1.74

So we need stack_size * 1.74 = 1900, which means stack_size = 1900/1.74 ~= 1092.

So you need 1092 gargoyles to one-shot all griffins 100% of the time. I told you you need a thousand gargoyles :P
