Title: Fragments

As some of you already know, I have been working on a card game for a while, and I think it is stable enough to make a topic about it.

A quick summary to let you know what the game is all about:
There are 5 colors of mana, like in MtG.
You can sacrifice a card from your hand to increase your max mana of that color.
Mana resets to max at the start of each turn.
Creature can be placed in attack or defense zone.
Creatures in the Defense zone can attack creatures in opponent's Attack Zone.
Creatures in the Attack zone can attack any of opponent's creature, or if opponent's Defense zone is empty, they can attack the opponent directly.
Artifacts are like permanents in EtG, but they have durability that decrease when their abilities are used. When durability reaches 0, they are destroyed.

All the cards ingame now are designed by skyironsword.

I'm not sure whether this game affected yours, but you should check out Mytheria: http://www.kongregate.com/games/diffusiongames/mytheria

It's a fun, free, but short card game. It has mechanics similar to your game (5 colors, you can increase mana, mana refills every turn, attack and defense zone, defensive creatures can't attack), so you could try it for even more inspiration (if you are still working on it) if you haven't tried it yet. :)

Bug report: The ability "Regen" doesn't work. Neither as intended, nor at all.

Edit: Same with Soulseeker's ability. Doesn't trigger if anything (ally or enemy) dies, tapped or untapped.

Star Cell is also quite... fun. ^^ Not sure what it should do, so just stating what I've seen: It triggers 3 stars everytime an opponent kills one of your creatures (in the area where the Cell is, not where the dying creature was). If your creature dies from its own attack, no stars are triggered. The Star Cell itself doesn't care when it died, it will spawn 3 stars either way.

Not sure if a bug, but Miracle heals over max. HP if used on a creature, effectively giving +10 HP, even if it wasn't hurt at all.

Graphical bugs:
The first placed cards in each line while deck building is out of the screen.

Other:
For some reason, I cannot copy the deck code. That may be a browser or add-on issue rather than one of your game.

Regen and all death trigger things are now fixed.

Healing over max hp is also fixed

As for the grahpical bug, could you please show me with a screenshot exactly what you are seeing, because on my resolution I do not get the same problem.

Copy/pasting is for some reason not supported for WebGL/Unity, which sucks. I will make some kind of workaround eventually, but it is not ingame for now.
That is super cool, i have always wanted to create my own card game.
The AI isn't attacking me though.

Yeah, there is no AI. When you play alone you control both players.

  • To avoid the first turn card sacrifice, the players could be offered to get a mana of their choice in the beginning of the game.
  • Highlight could be added to playable cards, just like in Elements.
I find it more interesting to have to sacrifice cards. It adds more to the strategy. You can either sacrifice big cards and go for a more aggressive approach, or sacrifice small cards and go for a more control approach.

You could still sacrifice another card right out the gate, so that option wouldn't be taken away from you. If both players discard, it's just -1 card with no real advantage to anyone (unless someone has a Peasant card).

It's just a suggestion though. I'm still just getting used to all the functions, so what I said doesn't weigh much yet.

Huge update: Added AI! It's still pretty bad sometimes (but it still managed to beat me, rip), and it might sometimes take a long time to take its turn. Note that the game essentially freezes during AI turn.

Big update again! A few days ago I finished added another set of cards, called Dystopia. The game now has 205 cards.

I have now also added an account system and ingame deck storage. Currently there is no features for the accounts except the deck storage, but I assure you that more will come shortly.

If there are problems logging in, try using http instead of https in the url. (Yeah, it's not super safe atm)

Update (does anyone even read these?): Added a main menu, and card collection. There is currently no way to gain more cards though (You start with standard set). If you want to play with all cards, just enable sandbox mode at login screen.

Seems like a pretty weak update, but it's to prepare for the things to come. Tomorrow I'm gonna start implementing more kinds of AI battles (where you can gain gold), as well as a booster pack shop.

I did a bit of testing and love the mechanics, but I have never been a beta-lover, so i'll be wanting to play as soon as there's accounts and card collection building. I heard you talking about packs and that sounds great.

Well here comes what you've all been waiting for. There is now a booster pack shop! And since the campaign only gives you a limited amount of gold, the Coliseum has opened! You will build a deck that follows its restrictions, and then see how many maches you can complete in a row. The longer you last, the greater reward for each match will be, but your opponents will also get stronger for each match completed.

So yeah, now there is true collecting going on, with booster packs and grinding!

New big update: Lots of changes in sets, including lots of new cards, moved cards and a couple removed cards. A total of 17 new cards spread over Revelations and Dystopia.

Also AI changes: AI should lag less (hopefully not at all) while it's thinking, and those "Out of memory" issues should hopefully be gone now!

Several new quests added, much harder than the existing ones.



Also, I plan to revise the quest/game progressing heavily. Here is my current plan: (This is NOT ingame yet!)
At first, only a tutorial is availible. Probably 3 missions, you use a fixed deck, so no deck building yet.

Once you complete the tutorial, you pick a color to start with (or maybe you just get a default color, say Red), and the first 5 questlines open in the Campaign. Booster shop and Coliseum still locked. You will get all the cards from the chosen color in the Basic set, but the others remain locked.

Each of the first 5 questlines has an associated color, and completing it gives you all Basic cards of that color. Completing the questline for the color you started with gives you the colorless cards as well as some extra gold.

Once you have completed all 5 questlines, you now have the full Basic card set. Now the Coliseum unlocks, as well as the ability to unlock the "quest sets". You unlock a quest set by paying some gold (likely pretty cheap). The booster pack shop is still locked.

Unlocking a quest set (there is one quest set for each card set, so right now that would be "Revelations" and "Dystopia") gives you access to the first questline of that set. It's a 3-quest long questline, and should be fairly simple. Completing the questline unlocks the other questlines for that set, as well as the ability to buy packs from the set in the Booster shop. The booster shop unlocks once you have unlocked at least 1 card pack.


The quests currently ingame is the first 5 questlines that you would unlock after the tutorial, as well as most of the the Revelations quest set.

As for name of the actual game, I am thinking something with Gate, like X's Gate or Gate of X. X is gonna be something like Destiny, Heaven, or similar, haven't yet decided.
Lorewise the Gate would be something that opened a few hundred years ago, and it is from that Gate all the magic power and magical creatures currently in the world entered.

There are now 2 tutorial missions availible under Campaign. They aren't really integrated into the quests sytem or anything, you can do them in either order right now.
I will add a third (which will be the last I thing) tutorial shortly, and also make the tutorials act more like real quest, i.e. you have to do them in order and you have to complete them before doing anything else. Tutorials right now cover creatures, spells, combat, passive abilities, mana, zones. The final tutorial will be about multi-color decks, and activated and triggered ablities.

Feel free to try the two that exists, and let me know if there is something else that should be mentioned in them. It's easy to miss things that I think is "obvious", which of course isn't always obvious to new players.

I also plan to add soem sort of ingame encyclopedia where you could looks up most info (like zones, mana, artifacts) as well as list all keyword abilities.

Big update:

The quest structure got a rework, together with several new quests. This is how it works now:
First only the tutorial is unlocked, and you must complete it (like before)
Then the Basic quests open. You will have predetermined starter decks for those quests, so you cannot build any own decks yet.
After all basic quests are completed, you unlock Coliseum, Deckbuilding, and the other quest sets. Booster packs and Crafting is still locked.
Each quest set can be bought for a pretty small amount of gold (100 for Revelations, 150 for Dystopia)
After unlocking it, you will at first only have 1 questline open for that set. Wheny uo complete it, you then unlock booster packs for that set, crafting cards from that set, as well as 3 more questlines. Completing the 3rd quest of all the three questlines, unlock the fina questline. The final questline has 4 quests, and completing each quest there will give you 1 copy of a new reward card (So 4 copies of the card in total). This is the only way to get this card, you cannot craft it.

Other updates: Registering and Login are now seperated. You can now rename decks. You can now delete your account and change password.Wording for mill cards is changed to "destroy cards in deck".

The game now starts to feel a bit more like a real game gameplay/content-wise, but there is still a lot of work to be done regarding presentation and graphics. If you want to make card art for the game, or maybe you have a great idea for how the UI should look like, don't hesitate to PM me or post in this topic! And of course if you have any questions, or just want to say anything about the game (good or bad), please post too!

New big update: New card set!

A new card set (Labyrinth) is added with 71 new cards. Unlock the new quest set by paying 200 gold in the Quest menu. Then by completing the first 3 quests there you unlock the ability to buy boosters from the new set and craft the new set cards. (I.e. exactly like the other sets work)

I also made some AI tweaks, and AI should be faster than before when there are many creatures on the board. It should also hopefully be a bit smarter.

There is also a mana filter in the deck building screen, as well as a search bar.

This is great fun. I just got out of the basic quests, and I'm currently using a green/black deck based on swarming the field with skeletons, then Harvesting and buffing them up after using Abyssal Rune :D

I can't wait until this is a finished product with card art and music :)

Added some new restrictions and events for Coliseum, check it out!

Also redesigned cards and creatures appearance ingame, mostly to make place for the new card art! Art is made by Ravizant, and so far the cards Phoenix, Ash, Lightning Bolt, Spectrum, Data Echo, Explosion, Frost Nova have art!

Added dragging mouse from creatures to targets to attack, and same thing with spell cards. Note that this only works with targeted spell cards, and only if you don't have to choose how to pay the mana cost.

Also, am working on adding a new game mode, draft. It will be similar to Hearthstone arena, but with some other stuff in it too.
It's gonna work like this basically:

You get a choice of 3 pairs of cards each time, so each choice adds two cards to your draft-collection. This will be done 30 times for a total of 60 cards.
You will also get 5 choices of "Draft-cards", which is a special type of cards that are stronger than the normal cards.
When this card-selection is done, you'll enter deckbuilding where you can build a 40-60 card deck with the 60 cards you have picked.
During play in draft mode you will every 5th turn (or something) draw 1 card from your 5-card Draft-card deck.
Then you take this deck and play 5 matches with it, getting rewards depending on how many you won.

I think Fragments is a much clearer, more memorable, easily spelled, and more powerful name. I checked the best known games database and it is not yet being used for any commercial game. I think it stands to provide a more solid foundation for branding the game. That said, I'm not opposed to a subtitle.

The name Fragments is not at all dull. It invokes a question (what is fragmented, why is it fragmented?) and leaves you wanting to know more about it. The game and the design is where the excitement then are created. Magic and Hearthstone both would have to be considered dull as well, but I couldn't agree with that. Magic does have a subtitle, which is why it may be worth discussing subtitles.

There is nothing specifically Cerulean about the game or the fragments in the game. It's a tacked on adjective with no purpose other than to add some color which isn't needed. It adds confusion and makes it more troublesome to write out. It does not add anything about the game and a random color doesn't add more intrigue or more interest.

For the same reasons, I think Fragmented is just as acceptable as Fragments. That said, I prefer a noun, Fragments, over an adjective, Fragmented. I think a noun has a more solid feeling, more tangible, while still leaving the user wondering more. But either way is acceptable.

I agree. And I'm saying if Fragments is too vague, you could subtitle it if you feel like it. I'm just against random adjectives tacked on to it.

Huge new update:
Added Draft mode!

You gain Draft tickets by winning in Coliseum, and then you can spend 12 tickets for a Draft run. Pick pairs of cards until you have 60 cards, and along the way draft powerful Treasure cards that you will draw during the game. You play 5 games against other draft decks (against AI, not other players), and then you gain rewards according to your number of wins.

This is basically the last new large feature I have planned currently, so gameplay-wise I consider the game mostly complete, just gonna add some more ingame tutorials and information instead of that instructions page. And of course there are a lot of work on presentation/UI/art and stuf that needs to be done. And a lot of other minor things that can be done. And of course new cards. And yeah...

I think it also needs loading screen, I have a slow computer at work and at first I thought it is a bug, I just had a big rectangle, after a while there actually started to appear something. So it might be confusing without any indication the game is loading.
I have a fast computer and the same thing happens :(
The game supposedly has a loading bar (and it did show up before) but now it's gone for some reason. Tried to look into it but couldn't find the cause :/

A little update that makes the game smoother to play:
You can now play creatures and artifacts by dragging them to their zone. You can also play non-targeting spells by dragging them to your board. You can also convert by shift-clicking a card and cancel targeting by pressing escape.

Note that you could already attack by dragging a creature to its target, and play targeted spells by dragging them to a target. You can also end turn by pressing spacebar.

Played through the basic quests today, here's some feedback, with a (priority):

- The mechanic is awesome. When this game is finished and polished it will be great fun. Gives so much more depth to strategy and planning ahead having to sacrifice cards for mana. Great work
- The small proportion of cards i have played with feel well thought out and decently balanced. The colours have well defined 'feels'
- Minor grammar in the quest dialogue, would be happy to help with this (low)
- Card art. I know it's hard to source but it would make a HUGE difference to playing enjoyment, as it makes it so much easier and faster to asses your hand and the board. from a non-testing playability standpoint I wouldn't be playing more of this game at this point until there's art, it's just far too much effort to assess games as they develop (high)
- Animation. Playing the actual turn-by-turn, play by play steps could be made much more satisfying. Games like HS, TESL and even elements are satisfying because of animations such as [drag-and-attack having an arrow] [Creatures having some sort of animation when they are attacked] etc etc. For longevity of a game like this, the play by play should feel actually satisfying regardless of tactical development. Not vital at all at this stage but should be done at some point to really give the game that addictive edge (low-medium)

Yeah, card art is really something that is needed. Glad to hear there are people that can help :D

Some new (well, new since my last post) minor features that makes gameplay more smooth:
Now an actual card shows up when mousing over a creature or artifact, instead of just a boring text box.
You can now choose what deck to use before each campaign mission.
Clear filter button added to deck builder.

Also there are a bunch of minor card changes.

Some updates:

Added lore to the first three Revelations quests (more incoming soon)
Added small icons on creatures on board for when they have On Death effects or activated abilities.
Compressed hand so that more cards fit on screen at the same time.

Some recent updates:

3 more missions now has story (and the existing mission story was changed)
Triggered abilities on creatures and artifacts now has an icon too.
You can play Draft mode by spending 80 gold. (instead of using tickets gained from Coliseum)
Some card buffs, nerfs and changes.

Recent updates:

Simple animations added when attacking and dying. Hovering fading numbers added whenever something takes damage or is healed. Also smooth moving of creatures and artifact when they switch zone or move to fill up space of something that just died.
Animations are really basic, but they make a pretty large difference, particularly in following the AI.
Colored cost icons on cards, instead of letters.
Art credits are ingame with mouseover to see all art.

Also, the next set, Mechanism, with focus on artifacts, will be released soon. You can test many of the new cards in sandbox at https://fragmentscardgame.com/testing (be aware of possible bugs though, it's called testing for a reason)

Huge update:

A new set, Mechanism is released with 70 new cards. There are also background art ingame, so no the game starts to look like a game! Cards have better looking backgrounds too.

Other new cool stuff are ingame keyword tooltip when mousing over a card,  option to play with uncollectible cards in sandbox mode, and of course more card art!

Been a while since I posted here now, I figure I can make an update for those that don't follow the game on Discord.
So here is some stuff that has been added since last post (about 1.5 years ago...)

New cards in every set!
Many more smooth looking move animations, including when drawing a card, playing a creature or artifact, and attack with creatures!
A redesign of deckbuilding screen that makes it looks more like Hearthstone's (Much larger cards)
New player experience changed; Now the tutorial missions and only the first 5 Basic quests needs to be completed first, and they will be on a special screen until completed.
Lots more art, and some sound effects added to most Basic spell cards (more cards are getting sound soon)

Also today I made a forum for the game at http://forum.fragmentscardgame.com/ It's extremely bare bones and has basically no content yet, but it's there and it is (or hopefully will be at least) a good place to discuss the game aside from the Discord channel.

Figured I can update here a bit even though no one has replied for years lol.

Biggest thing that happened since last update is probably that there are now a lot more art, all Basic cards now have arts and most of the cards in the first few sets too. There is also a new card set, Tempest which has 70 new cool cards.

I also just added a way to see deck stats like color balance and mana curve for your deck in the deck buidler.

So I saw that the tutorials didn't work, so I just fixed them!

So if you tried the tutorial before and couldn't progress past the second one, be sure to try again.
