Just asking, why would I split my ball into 2 or throw some into the map? I lose size...
You're chasing someone who's faster than you, so you split in their direction and bam! you've gobbled them up.
Typically if I'm bigger than someone, I'll throw my mass onto the map to catch a faster opponent, then keep the two blobs touching each other until it goes back into 1 mass (as qwerter pointed out, you get 87.5% mass back, but since you gobbled an opponent it was worth it)
Now, if I'm smaller then someone, I'll do a normal split so I don't insta lose, so when they shoot their mass as me they get minimal gain and so I speed up and can actually get away. If the person decides to keep spitting mass, they'll actually eventually be weaker than myself because they're not giving their divided masses time to come back as one mass. At that point I can turn around and gobble him up 1 by 1 until I've just made an absolutely outstanding gain in mass. Gotta love over aggressive opponents. Also by running around sharp objects is a good defense, as opponents are slower than you and they can't shoot their mass into the object. They eventually just give up, patience is a virtue.
