Title: King of Tokyo with Draco and Agumon
Post by: Hyroen on July 29, 2016, 06:02:41 pm
Presenting King of Tokyo, hosted by dracomageat!

To all those unfamiliar with King of Tokyo, it is a board game designed by Richard Garfield, wherein players choose one of a variety of monsters (and in our version, some custom ones as well!) and use their abilities, equipment and power-ups in order to gain the most fame or be the last one standing. The winner is the first player to reach 20 stars, or the only player to have any health.

Players throw 6 dice, and may reroll any number of them up to 2 times. That is to say, you get 2 rerolls.

Dice options include energy, heart, claw, 1, 2, and 3. With energy dice, players collect energy tokens to buy power cards with. With heart dice, players can heal damage done to them. With claw dice, players outside Tokyo can attack players in Tokyo, or players in Tokyo can attack players outside. Three 1 dies score 1 star, three 2s score 2, and three 3s score 3. If a players ends with more than 3 of the same numbered dice(4 dice with the result of 2) , they score additional points per same numbered dice (3 stars, instead of 2).

The game hosted, inspired by King of Tokyo, will be played with the infrastructure of Google Docs and the dice-rolling capabilities of the EtG chat room (usually the Tournament Room).

For more about info about the rules of King of Tokyo, watch THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Emqihu5hY0) video.

So if reenacting your favourite B-list monster movies through a board game with friends sounds like a blast, check it out and join in on the fun!

When a game is being hosted, an announcement will be posted.

See you there!

Thank you to dracomageat for hosting and ji412jo & Fippe94 for joining myself and draco.

Round 2 is beginning in about 5 minutes if anyone cares to join us in the tourney room. Last time Hyro won with the Kraken after Fippe went the entire game on 3 health and me and joey died to some pretty risky plays.
Hopefully the next will be just as fun.

Oh god, I know this game! I don't know why, but this topic only showed up in my Unread box today.

Is it late to sign up for a future match? (definitely not today though)

There're no real sign-ups, just talk to anyone with the gdocs link and they'll induct you into the online KoT scene.
Our games are pretty impromptu, honestly.

The last battle was intense: A fight between the Pandakaï(ji412jo) and the Alienoid(fabian771).

At the finish I lost because he stole my stretchy. You thief. That game was so OMG intense.

I'd like to get my revenge on you, someday, Joey.

And I hope you accept my offer to overkill one of us.

On the Other hand, me and Hyroen went out first this game. It's highly reassuring to see he's not as good with the undead Boogy Woogy as he was with the Kraken and I was quite impressed with the sheer length of time my custom Agumon card managed to hold out against the relentless tide of damage that is living in Tokyo, even if it did little else in the process.

Good games all round.

When it became a 1v1 fight I decided to be sneaky, I just stayed in tokyo and hid, waited round and round, and slowly amassed enough stars to win.

It was a blast playing with you guys! Thanks ji412jo, fabian771 & Fippe94 for joining in on the fun.

As I had been discussing with draco before, I definitely want to test out the idea of custom characters, particularly playing with Elementals! Naturally, custom characters take quite a bit of balancing, and would love to be able to test and tweak them, and of course, they don't have to be used at all in any case.

As joey and fab won recently, if you check the spreadsheet again, you'll see the :darkness Darkness and :water Water Elementals I've been working on. They introduce the Passive Evolution mechanic, basically being an Evolution that you start off with.

You're definitely free to post your thoughts on them, but please do not edit them. If you have any ideas on how to simplify them or balance them, feel free to let me know!

On that note, I look forward to the next game and hope to see more new faces!

Basically someone wants to play and asks in chat "does someone else wants to play", and then we play.

Yep. You essentially need at least 3 players and then you're good to go.

Among them there should definitely be a host, whose responsibilities include (re)stocking the sold cards, being the last word for rulings (if draco isn't there) and making sure things run smoothly. Hosts should ideally have played at least once or twice.

Hyro, I've put some effort into reinterpreting your cards so that they make sense in KoT (linguistically and mechanically) but some are just crazily overwordy referential messes I can't handle.
Please fix this.

Also, stop using the word player you 4th wall breaking jerk :p.

:3

Specificity is a weakness of mine.

Hopefully at least the vibe and playstyle of the characters comes through. The Elemental Expansion is more of a side project. I really wish the Evos could be sleeker, but when you don't want there to be any doubts, you can't compromise.

I'll be on chat if you want to poke me.

Won by a little bit of a roll which ended on a lucky 555553. Sub had 5 hp, so I won without him being able to block it or flee and heal(he had the opportunity twice).

GG, Submachine!

Gigazaur seems to have that effect on its user that they get points very fast, but tend to forget about the option of fleeing Tokyo. ^^" (I'm referring to yesterday's match.)

Had 16 points before defeat, so it was close. GG, fabian!

As some of you may have already noticed, the spreadsheet main page has received a face lift! Hopefully these new changes will help in the efforts to make gameplay a bit smoother, clearer and faster. Thank you to those that were involved with inserting coding into the page!

Extra Evolutions have been introduced. Fear not, however! These Evolutions do not affect gameplay whatsoever. This section has been added to character sheets in order for players and testers in general to be able to suggest and test out new Evolution ideas, in essence being like a sandbox for Evolutions. If you have played with us before and would like to propose a balanced, thematic and innovative Evolution for a particular character, give it a try.

3 of the Elemental Expansion characters (Sylph, Vampire and Undine), have been removed for the time being. Though the 12 Elementals are complete, they still need to be tested and refined further and anyone willing to help and test them out can simply poke me in chat for a quick(er) test game of no more than 3 players!

I would also like to remind everyone that though this game can be a blast when playing with some friends, it -is- a board game translated into spreadsheets and online dice rolls, and so it can take a bit of time. Some games have taken at least 2 hours and the more Players that participate, I find, the longer games take. This may not necessarily be because it is a part of the game design, but it may be because you simply have more people to wait on. From testing, ideal games are around 3-4 players, but games -can- still work with groups of 3-6 players. Hopefully, more changes such as those of the main page can be implemented in order to shorten gameplay time and make the game run as smooth as possible.

Having said that, if you're interested in trying out a game, make sure to read as much info you can from the OP and if you have any doubts, feel free to ask any experienced player!
Just in case YouTube videos aren't your thing, a King of Tokyo Rulebook (pdf) has been added to the OP in case you'd like to read up on the rules and see how the board game works! Keep in mind, though, some things are slightly different the way we play the game as there is no actual board to play on!

With all that in mind, keep having a blast.
:)

Wow. What a game. A long one, but a good one. Thank you Kuroaitou, Solaris and Fippe94 for joining and helping us test out :time Time Elemental, Wanderer. A few balancing adjustments were made, but overall, playing with Wanderer was a blast. But for now, Wanderer will return back into the Elemental Expansion vault until the :time comes.

Great game, with Kuroaitou as the victor, the game was best summarized by the following excerpt from chat:

I had a fun testgame today with a generated Player B and Player C. I didn't plan to post anything, but it was crazy, so I'm sharing it anyway.

Player B (Kraken) accumulated 19 points (he already had 10 points on his second resolve), while Players B and C (Meka Dragon) were respectively at 6 and 4 HP, outside of Tokyo. My turn was right before Player B's, so I (Pumpkin Jack) had one final chance to kill Player B before he got 1 more star. With the help of an evolution and 2 Smoke Clouds, I barely managed to deal 4 damage to everyone (+2 to Player B), thus killing everyone else with exact damage in one turn. ;)

[2016-08-06 18:57:16] ‹CleanOnion› I think Fluidity might be a bit OP - I thought the damage blocking one would be too, but it doesn't seem to be
[2016-08-06 18:57:21] ‹Hyroen› did any evo seem OP?
[2016-08-06 18:57:50] ‹Hyroen› keep in mind Fluidity was pretty strong because of Parasitic Tentacles
[2016-08-06 18:57:53] ‹Hyroen› it was a good combo.
[2016-08-06 18:58:02] ‹fabian771› Right.
[2016-08-06 18:58:26] worldwideweb3 left.
[2016-08-06 18:58:29] ‹fabian771› However, it still allows me to exchange useless cards for powerful ones.

[2016-08-06 18:58:47] ‹fabian771› That's not too nice.
[2016-08-06 18:58:57] ‹fabian771› And one of the reasons why I won.
[2016-08-06 18:59:05] ‹Hyroen› there is a card that allows you to do that
[2016-08-06 18:59:11] ‹Hyroen› called Metamorph
[2016-08-06 18:59:16] ‹fabian771› No.
[2016-08-06 18:59:21] ‹fabian771› Oh right.
[2016-08-06 18:59:49] ‹Hyroen› and even it is stronger.
[2016-08-06 18:59:51] ‹fabian771› Well...
[2016-08-06 19:00:06] ‹Hyroen› though granted, there's a higher chance of getting it.
[2016-08-06 19:00:26] ‹fabian771› But Fluidity is still stronger due to being an evo. I would do refund -1/2.
[2016-08-06 19:00:47] ‹Hyroen› it could also be a Temporary
[2016-08-06 19:00:59] ‹fabian771› That, too.
[2016-08-06 19:00:59] ‹Submachine› ‹@Hyroen› I didn't really follow her evos
[2016-08-06 19:01:15] ‹Hyroen› ah ok no worries Sub <3
[2016-08-06 19:01:31] ‹Hyroen› I do feel that as a temporary it might be UP though.
[2016-08-06 19:01:53] ‹Submachine› Though I think maybe the "avoid damage and decrease max hp" instead might be a bit OP
[2016-08-06 19:01:58] ‹fabian771› Keep in mind that having 1 in 7 chance of getting it is way better than a chance of 1 in 67.
[2016-08-06 19:02:14] ‹Submachine› It makes you effectively start with 20 HP
[2016-08-06 19:02:26] ‹fabian771› ‹@Submachine› That means I can't heal. Maybe it's a shield, but it won't last for long.
[2016-08-06 19:02:36] ‹fabian771› And no.
[2016-08-06 19:03:00] ‹fabian771› High current HP for Liquidform and other healing disables this shield to a certain extent.
[2016-08-06 19:03:48] ‹Submachine› Dispersion says nothing about not healing
[2016-08-06 19:04:51] ‹Hyroen› I'll definitely look into this.
[2016-08-06 19:05:14] ‹Submachine› are there WIPs for all 12 elements?
[2016-08-06 19:05:21] ‹Submachine› Heard there is one for :time too
[2016-08-06 19:05:22] ‹Hyroen› Undine didn't seem too OP, but Dispersion didn't seem too strong.
[2016-08-06 19:05:35] ‹Hyroen› yep. Kuro got to try out the :time elemental Wanderer
[2016-08-06 19:06:11] ‹Hyroen› Dispersion could read something like "3 or more damage"
[2016-08-06 19:06:53] ‹Hyroen› in that way, slow chip damage would still take Undine out.
[2016-08-06 19:07:14] ‹fabian771› But... I did also avoid losing the game when I used dispersion to evade using liquidform or paying damage.
[2016-08-06 19:07:51] ‹Hyroen› well, you had paid over the course of the game a few stars here and there.
[2016-08-06 19:07:59] ‹fabian771› You could set a maximum HP reduction to level this, or I don't know.
[2016-08-06 19:08:36] ‹fabian771› It actually saved me twice.
[2016-08-06 19:08:41] ‹Hyroen› yeah, I'm thinking it should be 3 or more damage.
[2016-08-06 19:08:48] ‹Submachine› either way, I enjoyed following the game, but I gotta go now ^^"
[2016-08-06 19:09:02] ‹Hyroen› it would still nerf, but not too powerfully
[2016-08-06 19:09:07] ‹Submachine› Good night beautiful people~
[2016-08-06 19:09:10] ‹Hyroen› it was nice to have you Sub. <3
[2016-08-06 19:09:12] ‹Hyroen› sleep well.
[2016-08-06 19:09:24] ‹fabian771› ‹@Submachine› Bonne nuit.
[2016-08-06 19:09:54] Submachine left.
[2016-08-06 19:10:06] ‹fabian771› Submachine will now go into his sleeping submarine.
[2016-08-06 19:10:31] ‹Hyroen› yap.
[2016-08-06 19:11:04] ‹Hyroen› what do you think of the new wording for Dispersion fab?
[2016-08-06 19:11:42] ‹fabian771› Pretty, only ables to avoid damage at low HP. A last-resource lifesaver. I like it.
[2016-08-06 19:12:04] ‹fabian771› And will affect healing quite seriously.
[2016-08-06 19:12:36] ‹fabian771› Everything else is neat.
[2016-08-06 19:12:43] ‹fabian771› I'll go post in the thread.
[2016-08-06 19:13:06] ‹Hyroen› thanks for helping test fab <3
[2016-08-06 19:13:18] ‹fabian771› You're welcome.

For now, +1 to the checklist:

Win with a ridiculous 123456, check.

Just won a very hard battle against The King (Submachine) and the Tokyo-centric Agumon (Fabian/CleanOnion) as Gigazaur. I'm very pleased with my victory but also at how genuinely scary it was to see Agumon evolving in the city and fending off everything I threw at him turn after turn.

I can't say for certain that everything he has is fair yet since the latest incarnation of Living Vaccine is very powerful but balanced compared to Pumpkin Jack's Scythe and Agumon's Zeros and Ones, his new 8th evo, is completely untested. I can, however, say that he made a great rival but never became insurmountably powerful, which sounds like a design win to me.

Also, well played to the both of you, you were serious competition.

To test some of the experimental characters to a full extent, I think we would get the best picture if we started a game with them fully evolved. That way, if anyone has an outstanding design flaw, we'll notice.

That being said, if anyone wants to try out a full evo run, join us in the Tournament Room! ;)

Starting off with fully evolved creatures is to test with bias. Some evolutions increase the likelihood of evolving for some Monsters and as such, this has to be taken into account when balancing skills.

tl;dr It's best to play and balance with regular gameplay; if an Evo is Passive, start with it, otherwise, don't.

I've played the vanilla boardgame version of this! Please poke me (here or Kong) if anyone is hosting a game :) I'll need to reread every card and rules before playing again tho ;_;

Any other boardgames that might be played? Werewolf? Coup?

Next game is in about ten minutes, feel free to join us.
We have played Monopoly and a custom deck of Cards Against Humanity in the past, who knows what the future may hold? There has been call for Legendary but, without knowing exactly what the contents of the box are, noone can type it up.

EDIT: 2 games played, both of them involving real big plays from Agumon but only the latter ending with his win. Second Wind seems to be a great early evo to keep him in Tokyo while he sets up but a less defensive card selection may hinder that strategy. Living Vaccine actually seemed rather less game changing.
Both, I feel, are balanced, though I can see why the latter annoys Gigazaur players.

Won today's KoT, after winning twice... in the same game. How?

Superpowered evo protected against overkill.
Then, went for stars, gained 7 when I needed 6(was at 14 so...)

Tough match, but early burrowing gave me a fair advantage at the match. Late-game stretchy also helped with 2 stars, while Smokey failed at getting them when I started hunting stars(Smokey was at 16).
Well done, Smokey. Hope to see you in another match!

Lunaris' death was my fault by fleeing with Burrowing when she attacked me. Then, non-tokyo killed her.
Draco, got exact damage thanks to burrowing (5) and he died.
Math and asdw, they died for natural causes...

But this time, I was a little powerhouse.

THE ALIENOID TRIUMPHS AGAIN!
THE ALIENOID WILL REIGN YOU ALL, AND I WILL DOMINATE THE WORLD!

For the sake of easing the character selection process, now that we have so many, I'm thinking of making a fighting game style roster sheet with ability ratings for each monster. These stats will probably be:

Attack: How much offense potential/focus the character has.
Defense: How defensive/armoured/good at healing the character is. Baby Gigazaur rates terribly here due to poor starting HP.
Zoning: A combination of the character's city/non-city focus and their ability to manipulate monster locations. Agumon rates very highly due to his ability to enter, stay in and gain bonuses from Tokyo.
Control: The character's ability to manipulate their dice combined with their ease of use. Draconis scores poorly on this due to RNG based and potentially suicidal evolutions, while Gigazaur and Pandakai gain points in this field for their result altering abilities.
Popularity: The character's ability to gain stars and their focus on that win condition, be it by passive dice rolling, abilities or claiming the city.
Growth: Their ability to get dangerous with time. Rob and Cyber Bunny score highly here due to energy gain abilities, while Baby Gigazaur does so because of its OP evos (balanced by poor HP).

These rankings will be determined solely by evolutions and displayed initially as scores out of 10. Please contribute if you know a character well enough.

Ended with a suicide mission killing off Luna, anti, and myself. all were below 3 hp, and I decided to buy a card "All monsters (including you) take 3 damage." No one was allowed to win.

We might be playing another game shortly if anyone else wants to come join us.

TBF, I could have won if I read the cards. Was poised to buy a card that would have killed off everyone else but me, but was blind and didn't play it. So mathman helped with the best ending ever. mathman saved Tokyo 8-)

And my mighty Space Penguin takes his very first game with a combination of Eater of the Dead and the ability to make everyone roll claws.

It still was not an easy victory, with Gigazaur holding off the win by stars, Mantis powering through my roll denial and Captain Fish having his own brief but worrying stint in Tokyo. In fact, if it weren't for the Fish's Anchor promoting further combat and loss of life, I might never have been in the manipulative position I was. Tonight's game could easily have been anyone's.

So this session of KoT, I chose Communist Kong. At one point I got the evolution Worker's Unite, which allows me to deal extra damage for each star I gain as long as I get 3 D1s. My final roll was 111156. I was also in Tokyo at the time, so I moved to Tokyo Tower to get 2 more stars.

2 Stars from the initial roll + 2 Stars from Tokyo Tower + 1 DClaw (5) = 5 damage. Draco and Naii happened to be at least below 5 damage.
