These stories all follow the premise that everyone has a timer on their wrist that counts down to when they meet their soul mate. All while fitting them in an 8.5 x 11 page [1" margins] of 11pt Arial.

The goal is to make the most depth and best presented story while limiting the space I can write in.

I'll be updating this post with my own stories and encourage others to write their own. Also, feedback is always welcomed.

Spoiler for "Sixty to Zero":
I tapped my foot impatiently on the gas, glancing impatiently from my wrist to the red light in front of me. It would only be a matter of minutes until I would arrive. A few more minutes until the timer on my wrist would count down to zero.

A final few moments until I would meet my soul mate.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I could see the warm yellow light of the intersecting street turn red just as the light above me flashed to green and the next turned yellow. Traffic was not going to keep me from the love of my life tonight. I stepped on the gas, speeding up, as I hoped to beat the next light.

Just as I approached the light, it turned red. And that was when she stepped out onto the crosswalk, looking around frantically. Her headphones cord bounced off her shoulder with her flowing red locks. She was searching for something. Someone.

And then our eyes met.

Her eyes quickly filled with hope. But this was short-lived. A look of despair immediately overshadowed that as she stared at the vehicle making its way towards her. Like a deer caught in the headlights, she froze as she realized her fate.

I slammed on the brakes and the car’s tires squealed in response, skidding as I still hurled towards the girl. But in that instant, there was a thud as my car made contact and threw her body into the intersection, my wrist beeping as the body settled on the other side of the crosswalk.

I couldn’t stop.

It was too late.

There was a final beep and then silence. I just sat behind the wheel, looking at her lifeless body as the gravity of what I had done sunk in. The consequence of my impatience.

The speedometer was at zero.

And so was my timer.

Spoiler for "Farewell":
“How much time do you have left on yours?”

“Five minutes.”

Jon tried to not make it obvious, but it was clear he was bothered by this. He constantly fumbled with his fingers as he looked around, scouting the rest of the plaza for whoever would be his replacement.

And I was just as anxious as he was. We had known this day would come, but we went with it anyways. Defying our fates, it was the best year of our life. And fate seemed to agree with us as our timers slowed to a halt.

But then, last week, mine started ticking again.

“Allie, I-”

He was choking on words and he was shaking on the verge of tears. Then he stopped himself and tightened his grip, as if he would never let me go. But he caved from his stony visage as streams came slowly trickling down from his eyes.

As I looked into his eyes, I looked for the words that would make him feel better, that would put him to ease. But nothing. We stood in awkward silence with tongues tied as my timer ticked further down.

One minute.

It was obvious Jon was struggling. The confusion and the pain were there, but where were the words? There were tears in his eyes as he loosened his hold and croaked out three words.

“I love you.”

I just looked into his eyes, keeping back the tears I had been holding back all this time as a I cracked a smile. It was could not hide my pain. And Jon knew as he let go of my hand and returned the same little smile.

I heard my wrist beep and then felt a tap on my shoulder, but I didn’t break eye contact. I would have all the time in the world to talk to my soul mate. Would have countless times to share touching moments, to learn to fall in love again. Countless times to wear my heart out on my sleeve and just cry like I was doing right now.

But this would be my last with Jon.

“I loved you too.”
